Natural Labor After Induction

Hi moms,
With my first baby (he is now 21 months) I was induced at 38 weeks because of extremely high blood pressure due to pre-eclampsia. Im about 38 weeks now and yesterday at my OBGYN appt, my blood pressure was really high for the first time since I have become pregnant. I was hooked up to a moniter until it came down to an OK range then my doctor let me leave. I am worried I am getting pre-eclampsia once again and I dont really want to be induced again. Being induced was a horrible experience for me and it caused alot of pain when my contractions started. I want to go into labor naturally and soon before my doctor decides to induce (which will probably be next weekend if my BP stays too high). So my question is has anyone been induced with baby #1 and went on to natural labor with number 2? Any tips to get this baby out faster? She is full term and has been in the correct head down position for 2 months now.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you for all the answers so far. I think what I wrote might have been a bit confusing. By natural, I meant going into labor by myself, like at home. Not having the baby natural, Im a firm believer in not being in pain when I dont have to. I had an epidural with #1 after 3 hours of horrible contractions that were right on top of each other and off the paper charts.

nipple stimulation worked for me; hooked on the breast pump and I went into labor the next day. Lots of sex and warm baths also are good options...

yes, labor can begin naturally after a previous induction. All three of my children were natural onset, followed by induction due to non-progression or the baby at risk during a lengthy labor. 1st child was epidural & vaginal, 2nd was c-section, & 3rd child was natural with that induction. & yes, I HATE the pit-drip!! Good Luck!

Oh, & one "old wive's tale" recommendation: tweak those nipples, make love.....& you may just trigger labor! & nothing like a big "O" to relax you... which may help that blood pressure. Sorry, if this is offensive, ladies!!

I have had 4 kids... The first was a full blown induction... All of them were technical inductions... The 1st was the only one I had pit. with... But for all of them they had to break the water... Once that was done it kicked right off...

And by "HAD " to I'm talking over 2 weeks over due and no end in sight... 10 lb babys. :-)

You may get lots of "tips" like eat spicy, eat bland, drink oil, walk, jump up and down, etc... lol I laugh because NOTHING will work unless YOUR BODY IS READY!!!! Even our DR told us that what ever they do to try to induce labor is a 50/ 50 chance... Thats why you hear of people who had to be "induced" multiple times with the same baby....

You may find that this induction (if it needs to happen) does not take the extreme measures that your first did... Or you may just wake up in labor... RELAX! (ok, hard to do I know) Worrying about it isn't helping the BP any...

Your body will do what it meant to do. Labor will start when your body is ready. Yes you can have a natural labor onset after an induction. I too think pitocin is the devil drug. Good Luck!

I was induced with my first two pregnancies due to high blood pressure and then (surprise!) went into labor on my own with my next two pregnancies. So, it certainly is possible for your body to naturally go into labor. Of course, the key word there is naturally. There are all kinds of crazy theories out there and, if you get any from other moms (that are safe, of course) you could give them a try, but I think when it comes to labor it just happens when it happens. There's not much you can do. When your body/baby are ready it will happen. Also, if you do need to be induced again it doesn't have to be a horrible experience. You've been through it before, so just knowing what to expect could make this one much easier. Try to relax (not easy I know) and enjoy these last few days with baby #1 as an only child. It will happen when and how it is supposed to. (BTW, I know this is all easier to say than to do.) Good luck!

I had both my children naturally (no drugs), but was facing a possible induction with my first due to him being a week over due date.
The positive thing is with #2 he came a week early and some said it was the fact your body knows what to do, etc. So you do have that on your side!
However, if you have preclamsia and your health and health of baby is at risk, you need to do what the doctor says. These types of inductions are not because someone wants to go skiing or make a golf game (lol!) it is a valid medical reason.
Honestly, you can still have a natrual birth with pitocin. It is harder because your body gets pushed into labor, but being #2, you are prepared and could use different mental/breathing to work through it.
Good luck!

I don't know how your body handles the epidural (or if you choose to get one)...
But when I was induced with my second (by choice), I asked for the epi before I even felt any pain. I was having painless contractions for 4 hrs, and when the doctor came to break my water and get things moving, I asked for the epi first.
So I never felt a single contraction with my second. Just the pressure, to know when to push.

I know that not every body responds the same way, but something to think about. Most people don't ask because they don't know that they can.

I was induced with both of my children. With #2 I asked my doctor for any and all advice to go into labor naturally. She told me the ONLY thing that works is sex. She said there is something in the semen that will kind of kick start things. I tried and no luck. I ended up being induced with him as well. On a brighter note, my 1st labor was long and hard and almost 2 hours of pushing. #2 (induced) was about 2 1/2 hours from inducing to him being born (5 minutes of pushing). So, even if you have to be induced, don't think that it will go the same as the first. (My secret was that when the contractions got really painful, I kind of pushed a little bit, just a tad and that made me feel better -- I guess that also hurried things along).

I had to be induced because of PIH with my second at 39 weeks. I had post-partum pre-eclampsia with my first, but had to be induced with the first because my water broke and nothing else was happening. I will always believe the pitocin and violence of my labor with the first caused the post-partum pre-eclampsia! I never had high BP until I was in labor and the back labor started. The contractions were so violent and on top of each other -whose BP wouldn't spike?!? Mine just wouldn't go down very much.

I wasn't thrilled when I had to be induced the second time around, but it was better than pre-eclampsia! Don't sweat it. I know you want to have a natural labor start (do you want to do a natural birth or epidural?). I finally had an epidural with my 1st because my BP was spiking so bad and they basically told my husband that I had to have one to see if it would bring my BP down or I would be getting one anyway for a c-section in about 5 minutes. It didn't take very well, but it DID stop the back labor and brought the BP down a little bit.

With the second, since I had to be induced, I opted for trying an epidural as soon as the contractions started getting bad. This time it actually took and I understood why everyone raves about them! It was fabulous! BP actually went down during labor; I went to sleep and was woken by a nurse 5 hours later asking me to push. I gave a push -she said "STOP!" -the doctor walked in -one more push and my 2nd was here! It was fabulous! So -if you only want to go into labor naturally without being induced, but you plan to have an epidural, then you can probably make that happen if you're very careful. Do everything possible to keep your BP down and focus on that. If it climbs -they're going to induce and they NEED to given your history. Try not to be too upset if this happens -ultimately it's all about having a healthy you and a healthy baby! Try eating lots of eggplant! I don't see that mentioned often, but it seems to work like a charm!

I was induced with my first and went into natural labor with my second. I agree with another poster that you should focus more on keeping your BP low rather than how to get the baby to come faster. That being said, when I really started to feel like we were getting close, we went out for a really long walk after dinner. That night I went into labor at midnight. But, you're only 38 weeks. It could be another two- or three- weeks before you go into labor, so don't push it. Stay really relaxed and hydrated and keep that BP low so they aren't forced to induce.

It can happen naturally after induction. I think you should focus more on keeping your BP down and not on how to get the baby here faster. Make sure to take it easy, no salt, lay on your left side, all that fun stuff. That way the Dr won't be forced to induced.

I was induced with all three of my kids. I'm pregnant with our 4th and I'm hoping I get to go naturally. Good luck and congrats on the baby!

ohhhh i know exactly what you mean with the induction. same kind of experience here. it hurt like HE**!!!!!!!! any ways i was scheduled to be induced on May 22nd 2008 with my youngest and he decided to come early. May 21st. so not much earlier but it saved me some what. about 1 week before i went into labor i scheduled my induction with the doctor.called my husband let him know so he could let the bosses know. well one of his bosses said watch she will go into labor the night before. well i went into labor a day early. i was not prepared. my mother in law wasn't due till that night to stay with our oldest since i was scheduled to be at the hospital at 4:30am and it was a 20 mile drive one way. any ways my suggestion is schedule the induction then go have fun. as much fun as you can at this point any ways. if you are still comfortable and your other half is comfortable with it also have sex. soak in a warm tub of water, go walking, lots and lots of walking. good luck.

I have had lots of friends have very good luck with labor induction by going to an acupuncturist that specializes in pregnancy and labor. Often they have gone into or resumed stalled labor within 24 hours, as long as they were at the stage you are at with full term and proper position. Look for a good recommendation in your area.

I feel you, I was induced for both of mine. My first labor was also horrible. I had no pain meds and all that pitocin was so painful!!! With my second, it went sooooo much better! My dr broke my water and I just went into labor on my own at that point and never had to have any pitocin. Also my second went a lot faster, just about six hours. I guess the second time around my body knew what to do!! I wish you all the best, I know that once the BP gets high it can be worrisome. Maybe if you do have to be induced you will be like me and your body will click into gear:) In my experience labor without pitocin hurts but it is a pain that can be tolerated and there is a break between each contraction. I would be talking and joking around and then say "ok, hang on!" And then watch the clock for a minute or so while I was contracting. Of course at the end, I was super focused and just had to get the job done:D I wish you the best and a great birth. Congrats, you will be holding your little one soon!

Hello, I hope your resting well today! If you can avoid getting induced it is best for you and your baby. Labor is hard enough without adding any of the synthetic medicines like Pitocin. If your baby isn't in distress and your not going through pre-eclampsia than hold off. There's ways to help bring on natural labor but they work differently for everyone.

I tried everything safe under the sun I could try to get my second out quicker. Nothing seemed to work...but I did have a natural labor after being induced for my first. It was a piece of cake compared to the induction. Contractions started slow and gradual...I was in transition before the became really painful in any way...and by then you are almost done.

Sending you good labor vibes and peace for your mind...HUGS!!
