Hi I was wondering if there is a product out there that you could put on dogs that is natural/ safe to get rid & prevent fleas?? I was puting the advantage & frontline on them but I read some studies that say it is not good for the dogs or our kids. So needless to say I want to use something safe.

thanks for your help!!

There is a great mail order and online service by Dr. Foster and Smith.
I use their biospot on my animals (cats and dogs) works wonderfully. It is citronella based, cheap, and lasts 4 to 6 weeks.

Hi M.,

Unless the flea season is incredibly aggressive I use Solumel from Melaleuca on my dog. He's old and has real sensitive skin and Solumel not only kills fleas, it repels them and it's good for his scalp. The melaleuca oil in the product is high grade (T36-C5) and is helpful as it is absorbed into the skin. I also use this product as part of a bug repellent for the family so it's perfectly safe for your little ones to cuddle up to.

I use Solumel in the carpet where he lays and I vacuum regularly to pick up any larva that might be lingering. Let me know if you'd like more information on the product or the company.

Regards,

M.

Brewers yeast is suppose to make your dogs less susceptible to fleas, I give my dogs the chewable tablets when I remember and they like the taste of them. Not sure how well it actually works since I also use Advantage. I have not heard anything about the flea stuff being bad for dogs/kids but I am sure there is a new study out there about that, we will add it to the long list of things all of a sudden bad for us, lol.

Brewer's Yeast is what my friend recommends - she breeds Dobermans, and refuses to put any chemicals at all on her bitches in order to protect the fetuses. It is supposed to make the dog taste and smell bad to a flea. You can buy it at Petsmart, and she just mixes it with her dogs' food. She also bathes her dogs every couple of weeks and washes their bedding every week to prevent fleas.

I also use Program, which is not natural but unlike Frontline, it's a pill (kind of like Heartgard and that sort of thing) that kills fleas. You can find it on 1800PetMeds.

Although it would never be advertised as such, Avon's Skin So Soft bath oil has been known to keep fleas off of dogs. I am a representative and have many customers that swear by it. You can visit my website and use code FSANY for free shipping. www.youravon.com/autumnlugo

I myself use Diamatecious Earth, it needs to be food grade. However I have not had any major infestations, but it has prevented the stray fleas picked up here there from becoming a problem.

Through some credible sources I have a heard of a Dog that is blind from using Comfortis. From what I understand the Company is paying for the treatment and looking into, and generally doing all they can. But the Dog is still blind. This is not urbane myth, but a true case.

Despite some issue's, Frontlines is still is the prefered choice. I am hoping I will not have to use it again as my dog has very sensitive skin.

We use Comfortis. It is a tablet they take once a month. It is AWESOME! No more fleas. They must take it on a full stomach or they will have a reaction. But, if you want truly organic, use diatomaceous earth. It is a powder you can put on the dogs and in your lawn and even on your carpet. It will not harm them if ingested. In fact, when one of my dogs had worms, we sprinkled it on his food. You can get it at Lowe's.

I wash my animals in Ivory dish soap. Not sure how it works but it kills the fleas almost instantly.

Ask your vet about Comfortis. Its active ingredient is spinosad which is approved by the government for use in Organic agriculture as well.
Spinosad is the fermentation byproduct of a naturally-occurring soil bacterium.

I'd definitely make sure to use a product your vet recommends because the safety records maintained by the FDA for veterinary medicine are the same as for human medicine. The same is not true for most over-the-counter products or those that you make yourself from household ingredients.

After you give your dog a bath. Create arinse with water and white vinegar (or apple cider vinegar) just a few ounces of the vinegar. It prevents fleas, it is good for the skin and it will create a shiny and helathy coat. I got rid of my afopted dogs fleas this way. Good luck.

they make stuff you can treat your lawn with that is safe for kids and pets. I don't know of any that you actually put on the dog/cat that is natural and works. Don't bath your dog very often because their natural oils help w/ preventing fleas.

I was over run with the fleas on my dogs and called Kirby's Pet Depot and they told me about Diatomaceous Earth which is very safe. It's a little pain but it works but you have to keep it up. I rub it all over my dogs, the carpet, their pillows, where ever the dogs are and I really works. BUT you have to keep it up so if you don't mind a powdery mess that is safe (even for your child) then look to see where in your area you can buy a large bag........maybe around $30
Hope this helps. You can even look it up on line and get all the fact
Good Luck it's a pain

a diced up 1/2 clove of garlic in his food everynight should do the trick (that's what I've done for ALL of my dogs for YEARS - with no ill side effects). I know there are differing oppinions & research regarding garlic, but below, I've posted an "answer" that I found on the internet. Good luck to you, whatever you do! :-)

Onions/Garlic:

Onions and garlic contain the toxic ingredient thiosulphate. Onions are more of a danger.

Pets affected by onion toxicity will develop haemolytic anaemia, where the pet’s red blood cells burst while circulating in its body. Symptoms include Hemolytic Anemia, labored breathing, liver damage, vomiting, diarrhea, discolored urine.

The poisoning occurs a few days after the pet has eaten the onion. All forms of onion can be a problem including dehydrated onions, raw onions, cooked onions and table scraps containing cooked onions and/or garlic. Left over pizza, Chinese dishes and commercial baby food containing onion, sometimes fed as a supplement to young pets, can cause illness.

While garlic also contains the toxic ingredient thiosulphate, it seems that garlic is less toxic and large amounts would need to be eaten to cause illness.

You can try Brewers Yeast or adding garlic and onions to the dogs food (not safe for cats though!). I give my dog two tablets of Brewers Yeast each day as a 'treat', and add all natural oil mix with garlic(you can find it on Ebay or at some pet stores) to her food. I also use diatomaceous earth in the yard and on the carpet. I also bathe her every two weeks with a citrus based shampoo. It isnt perfect, but it works pretty well.
