Hello, I am wondering if anyone out there has a natural deodorant that they really love. With all the talk about a connection b/t the chemicals in regular deodorant/antiperspirants and breast cancer, I'd love to find an alternative that really works. I don't care about the antiperspirant part, but do need a deodorant, especially in this warm weather. I tried one kind of Tom's of Maine and I swear it made it worse! Anyone have a success story out there?

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone for their responses. It was great to know I wasn't the only one who had had such bad luck with Tom's of Maine!:-) It seemed that no one had a great alternative, but a few mentioned "crystal deodorant" and I had heard of this before so I went and found it at Whole Foods. There were 2 brands and I picked the one called "Thai Crystal" just because it came in a regular deodorant case and looked easier to use than the loose crystal - but I think both products were otherwise identical. It cost $6.99 and is supposed to last for a year. And I must say, it's been only 2 days but it absolutely works!! It's just a natural mineral salt that you wet and rub on - it's not sticky or messy and it dries immediately. It supposedly works by covering your skin with a thin, invisible layer of mineral salts that bacteria cannot grow in. Says it's effective for 24 hours at a time. It doesn't smell "pretty" like scented deodorants, but if you're looking for an alternative to all the chemicals, I would really recommend trying this one. Thanks for pointing me in this direction!

I use the desert wind deodorant from Shaklee. It has safer ingredients than the deodorants you find in the store. They also have an all natural one butit isn't an antiperspirant.

My husband uses lemons when we don't have deodorant. Actually I think it works but I like how he smells anyway. I noticed the other people use Secret. I do too. It smells nice. And can I ever stink...

Hi Susan - my husband and I both have tried Tom's and Jason and both made us stinkier! I was so embarrassed that I've gone back to Secret and some days I try to go without any and do ok. Good luck and let us know if you find something that works.

I had a trial of "Naturally Fresh Deodorant Crystal" roll-on. It comes in 3 fragrances-at least according to what I received and they were not a really strong smell. I think it is about $4 a bottle though not sure. Anyway, it worked pretty well in keeping dry. I don't have bad body odor but my daughter had a major foot odor issue. Whew! It helped a bit though we also had her wash her feet more and use tea tree oil at night. I don't know if it is available in stores but the bottle I have has www.tccd.com and 800 653-4006. It might work for you.

The only thing that I have found that even puts a dent in the odor (naturally) is using Crystal (I like the liquid roll-on) after washing in the shower with honey and soap. Honey is supposed to be anti-bacterial and it does help, in my opinion.

I've tried:
Jason's (made my armpits burn horribly, left a rash on husband)
Oyin Funk Butter (abrasive and painful)
Kill it Dead (worked, but wore off quickly and smells strongly of tea tree oil, which husband finds repulsive)
Tom's (did nothing)
baking soda and lotion paste (again, too abrasive and a pain to apply)

I'm back to using Secret for summer- I can't stand to smell myself anymore. I gave natural deoderants a try for 3 years and I just can't take it anymore. My husband does just great using the Crystal kind in any form, but I think my hormones play a part in the smell too and I'm smellier for some reason than he is.

Hope this helps!
