My husband is looking to change companies and he happened to come across a pretty interesting ad for a position in the National Guard. I can't shake the fact that there is some catch though and before I have some recruiter down our throats I thought I would ask around to see if anyone had any experience in or looking into the National Guard?

My husband is currently serving in Iraq with a National Guard unit out of Grand Prairie. We were both active duty Army for a while then I got out & he went into the Guard. First thing you should know: there is a chance that if your husband joins the NG that he will be deployed; no matter what the recruiter tells you! Most positions with the NG are the standard 1 weekend a month & 2 weeks of training usually during the summer. There are positions called Active Guard that is basically like a 9 - 5 job pluss the 1 weekend & 2 weeks. Your husband will have to go to Basic Training & an additional school called AIT (Advanced Individual Training) where he will learn his military job (MOS). Sometimes Guard members can get those seperated by a year but I think that is usually something for highschool or college kids. Be forwarned that many (by no means all) recruiters will "stretch the truth" with unaware people. It pays to do your homework & be aware of what is going on & what they are saying.
I have been either in the military or the spouse of a soldier for over 10 years now & have no regrets. This is our life & we love it. The Army has been a blessing in our lives & though there are challenges (the deployments for one) there are so many rewards too. My husband is in the army national guard, and yes, it is very legit. However, the previous posters are right: do your homework and it is very likely there will be an overseas deployment. My husband is currently serving in Iraq. He joined the guard before we got married, so I don't know what the recruiters say, but I understand not everyone is eligible for all the benefits. That being said, there is job security! It isn't a way of life for everyone, but for those who can make it work, I think it is a good thing. I'm very proud of my country, and I'm proud of my husband. I think we are beyond blessed to live in a country where people volunteer to serve others in this way.
Just wanted to give you a heads up...my brother is in the National Guard and was deployed to Iraq 2 months ago...just keep that in mind when you are considering your options.
