I have a 10 month old and usually he takes an hour morning nap and a 2 hour afternoon nap and sleeps about 11 hours at night. recently though after i lay him down for his nap he is about to nod off and then he wakes himself up and starts screaming- hes normally very happy so this is sooo out of character for him. He also starting doing this occasionally at night- does anyone have an idea what's causing this aversion to sleep ??

What can I do next?

my 10 month old is doing the same thing and its driving me crazy!! i posted a similar question re: this and a lot of people said right around this age, they start not wanting to miss anything that goes on around them so will actively fight sleep! i dont really have any solutions for you -- i think they just grow out of it...

My twins did the same thing at that age. It's a normal phase that babies will go through, and it will pass. I know it's hard to handle now, but believe me, it won't last for long. If your child wakes himself up, give him 10-15 minutes to try to self-soothe and go back to sleep. If that doesn't work, you can try other tactics. Could your son be teething also? I know every time my boys begin to cut more teeth, they don't want to nap and they wake up often at night because their gums hurt.
Good luck!

My son did the same thing. He started having blood-curdling screams. It turns out a cold had turned into ear infections in both ears.

My now two year old used to wake himself up in the middle of the night to be changed get a new bottle - he was about 10 or 11 mos old. After I wasnt getting enough sleep at night because I would be the one to get up with him. He was a very attached baby and now Im seeing that he will always be unless I put a stop to it. I also tried half a bottle of milk, or even water in his bottle, and I tried giving him a bottle before he went to bed and no bottle when it was bedtime. You may have to put him to bed normally and if he wakes up let him cry it out and cry himself to sleep. Thats how I stopped him from wanting me at night. Eventually he slept all night without a peep.

My son started his separation anxiety phase right around then. We had lots of problems with him hearing us come up to bed, waking up and not wanting to go back to sleep. It took a couple months but that phase finally passed.
