Ok I wanted to know at what age did your toddlers go to only one nap a day? My daughter is only 12 months old and the past couple of days she has been refusing to take her morning nap. I always thought that they didn't cut them out until they were almost two. She used to take a two hour nap in the morning and an hour and a half nap in the afternoon. Could there be a different reason why she is not taking her morning nap?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you for all the coments. It looks like she is ready for one nap a day. She has been doing one nap a day for a couple of days now and has been able to handle it. She also is cutting three teeth at once but I think that she will be ok with one after lunch nap. She dropped her 3rd nap very abruptly also so I don't think that she will need to be eased into it. Thanks again!

My son went to one nap shortly before 12 months out of necessity (had to pick up his older brother from preschool at nap time) and it actually worked out better. He always went down easily because he was tired, slept 2 - 3 hrs. and was ready for bed at 7:30pm. She's likely ready. Give it a try. If it doesn't work, you could always go back. She may be at that in between stage where some days she'll take 2 and some days she'll take 1. Good luck :o)

I'm afraid if you were expecting two naps a day for another year, you are mistaken! Two naps a day usually ends at 12-18 months. It is fine that your daughter doesn't neeed it at 12 months, rather than several months later. She isn't napping twice because she has outgrown it. Usually when this happens, the afternoon nap is earlier and often longer, so if for example she wakes at 6:30 and used to nap 9:30 to 11:30 and then 2:00-3:30, now she might nap from 12:30 to 2:30 or 3:00. If you haven't made the afternoon nap start earlier, I'd suggest it. Your daughter's one nap a day is perfectly normal for her age.

My daughter went to one nap at 12 months. But this was not by her choice it was the schedule in her class at daycare. I asked my pedi if it was enough sleep for her and she said yes. I think your daughters adjustment is fine. Is she still going to sleep at night okay? I would just make sure she doesn't get cranky or overtired as a result of it. Otherwise if she gets tired enough she'll go to sleep. It may pass and she may go back to 2 naps. She keep an eye on her and make sure she doesn't get overtired and wear herself out.

It could just be a phase. All kids go through so many phases. Both of my two boys took two naps until around 18 months. I would keep trying to give her two naps. They usually need it and so do we!! :)

Anywhere from age 1-2 they usually make the change. My first son gave up the morning nap around 14 months, my 13 month old now NEEDS his morning nap, but it has shifted a half hour later than it used to be.

From my personal experience, and from most people I know, kids usually go to one nap at about 1 year or a little over. I have never known a child past about 16 mos. to take 2 naps per day. Most kids I know also seem to be done with regular naps by age 3. Once your little one gets used to taking 1 nap per day, the nap will probably get longer (2-3 hours). For my kids, when they went down to 1 nap, they were still ready for a morning nap, but started to refuse the afternoon nap. This made for a rough evening, so I gradually moved the morning nap back a few minutes each day until they were taking their one nap in the early afternoon. Good luck!

My older son didn't even nap consistently until 16 months. I think many kids are taking two naps at 12 months, but many are down to one nap a day. I wouldn't sweat it. She really could need just one nap or needs to nap a little later. Watch her signs and go with the flow.

My three all stopped their morning naps between 12 months and 14 months. And from my discussions with other mothers, it sounds like that is typical. And then the schedule shifts and lunch goes to 11:00 and the nap starts by 11:30. My guess is that your little one will have a nice long mid-day nap once she gets used to it. It took my kids a few weeks to really get into a new groove, but then they were sleeping for 3 hours in the middle of the day, which was great!
