My family and I recently moved to Naperville and I'm in search of a new midwife. Is it correct that midwives aren't allowed to deliver at Edward Hospital?
Does anyone know which hospital midwives ARE allowed to deliver at in the Naperville area?
Thanks!

What can I do next?

Have you considered delivering at home. I live in Plainfield and I just had my 4th child at home. My midwife is in Winfield/Naperville. Please contact me for her #. She may be able to steer you in the direction of finding another hospital. I thought Edwards had Midwives on Staff?

You're right, midwives are not allowed at Edwards (at least not as of 3 yrs ago). There is a fantastic practice that delivers out of Hinsdale. It's really not that far. It's West Suburban Women's Health. 630-654-BABY. I know 2 of the 3 midwives and one delivered our daughter and a friends daughter. All of my friends are now going there for regular gyn and one for OB. They are fantastic. There office is a little east of Rt 83 off of Plainfield Rd. They are worth a check. I know that there are also hospitals in Aurora that allow midwives as members of my Bradley class had some and liked them. Congrats!

Hi J.,
I don't know if any midwives deliver at Edward Hospital. I don't think there were any there when I delivered a few years ago. I delivered at Rush Copley in Aurora, and I loved it. I had Karen Barr, and Noreen Prokuski.... I loved them, and the Doctors in the office as well. They delivered all three of my kids. My last child was also high risk pregnancy...they were awesome.
They might also deliver at Central Dupage also, but I'm not sure.
Hope that helps :)

That is correct, Edward hospital does not allow for midwives, very sad, but true. You can try; however, Rush Copley located in Aurora, Hinsdale Hospital is very midwife friendly, and I believe Bolingbrook Hospital may have one too. I do like Hinsdale though and have had many clients (I am a natural childbirth educator), deliver out of there with very nice experiences. Feel free to contact me off site if you have any questions too and welcome to the area!!!! ____@____.com

I also had Noreen Prokuski and Karen Barr out of Rush. They were great and very caring. I also had a great labor-nurse. It was nice because their office is connected to hospital. When I went into one of my last appointment-it was time-so I just walked over to hospital and was checked in. I started out with Naperville Women's Health Care and was told the mid-wife only did appointments.?

Hi J.,
I've heard of midwives working at Rush Copley Hospital in Aurora on Ogden Ave. I'd suggest a birthing consultation with JoAnne Lindberg at Birthlink - www.birthlink.com or ###-###-#### because she maintains a website about birthing choices.

Hi J.,

i'm a nurse at good samaritan hosp in downers grove. I inquired at that dept and good sam does not have midwives who deliver.

Check out the website illinois midwives you can find local practices you can check out.
I think rush copley in aurora(just west of fox valley mall) on ogden may have midwives who can deliver there, also west suburban hosp in oak park.

Hinsdale Hospital allows Midwife deliveries. I go to West Suburban's Women's Health in Willowbrook and plan to be delivered by one of the three midwives out of Hinsdale Hospital.

I'm pretty sure that Edward only allows a midwife if you ALSO have an OB with you in the delivery room. And if my memory serves me correctly, there is only one practice in the area with a midwife that has admitting privileges with Edward. I had my first child at West Surburban in Oak Park using a midwife, and I had a wonderful experience. I had my second child at Edward using my OB. It was a so-so experience. It is surprising to me how different hospitals use different standards with their level of medical intervention. I felt like I had to be very insistent with my doctor and nurses at Edward in convincing them that I didn't want an epidural. Good luck finding a practice that you like, and welcome to Naperville!

You are going to have to go to Rush-Copley, and this most likely is a good thing. The c-section rate at Edwards is really high, so unless you want them to intervene, you are better off going to a hospital that is more friendly towards natural birth. I've only ever heard really good things about the midwives out of Rush-Copley. I'd be using them if I wasn't opting to home birth.

I'd also suggest avoiding Home First as they have some questionable practices, or at least do some serious research before going with them. Lots of people have serious complaints with them.

Check out Homefirst in Naperville. Their docs deliver at home or in Chicago hospitals.

There is a midwife at Naperville Women's Health - Dr. Flannery's office. They are out of Edward Hospital. Her name is Donna. The phone number for the office is ###-###-####. I love everyone in that office. I had prenatal appointments with Donna with both of my kids. I don't have any info about delivering with her because I ended up with a emergency c-section with my first and a planned c-section with my second. But, I would look into meeting with Donna. She's really great.

Deb Riddell can deliver at Rush Copley and Provena Mercy in Aurora, I delivered 2 of my children with a midwife from her practice (she is no longer there) at Provena Mercy and had a great experience with the staff. I had complelty natural births no meds at all. With my first pregnancy I had one nurse that continued to push meds until I got angry enough and then she didn't come in anymore and sent in others that were much more supportive. She is at Women First. Hope this helps a little.

No midwives at Edward or Central DuPage. Rush-Copely has a midwife group. I gave birth at Rush in Jan and had a great experience. I am a natural childbirth instructor in the area and my students also have had great experiences with the Rush midwives. Homefirst only does home births.
