So What Happened?

Thank you to those who didn't harp on the fact that I want to see about getting a NannyCam (at least for a little while). Whomever I hire will be the person I feel will be the best fit and provide the best care but in reality NOBODY, NOONE, NOBODY will better be able to watch my children and love my children like I do(or a close family member) or be trusted at first. If you do, that is your perogative. Thanks all.

We are looking into this right now for various reasons. Verizon has a system that looks pretty good. https://shop.verizon.com/buy/Monitoring-Energy-Saving/Hom...

Hi there, yes as Pam R. said, please ignore those who are downplaying the use of a nanny cam. There is no harm at all in ensuring your child is safe and well cared for.

Also, you absolutely do not need to make your nanny aware of the camera as long as you are not doing a voice recording. In IL you need permission to record someone's voice or you could be violating wiretapping laws.

If it is only a visual recording, however, most state laws agree that an individual cannot have an expectation of privacy in a home that is not hers. There are stipulations such as not putting one in a bathroom, etc., but in general you can film anything in your home, including your nanny, and it's not only legal, but God forbid could be used in court if it ever became necessary.

As for recommendations, I don't have a specific company in mind, but there is one thing I would caution you on when looking for a camera. Most nanny cams are wireless, where they transmit from a camera to a base such as a TV, computer, etc. Wireless cameras can be EASILY intercepted from up to a quarter mile away using very basic and inexpensive equipment. Not to be all paranoid, but if someone was up to no good, had time on their hands, and $200 to spare, they could easily spy on your home.

So, if you are going to invest in one of those cams, maybe look into purchasing one that is more sophisticated and uses some sort of signal scrambling.

Good luck!

I can't help but please ignore the people who aren't answering your question but just providing unsolicited opinions. There is the saying "better safe than sorry." I know there are lots of cameras out there now and most probably work well.

I with Christine on this one...

If you feel you have to have a Nannycam then something is missing somewhere.

IF you do go ahead and get a Nannycam, make sure your nanny is aware of it for future legal purposes...both involving you, her and right to privacy issues. Get all the details before you end up in a legal bind.

Added: Christine your added post said it all. Thank you.
