Nanny Pay - Park Ridge,IL

Hi Moms,

Trying to make this brief. Our nanny has been with us for two years. She currently makes 13/hr. She has many many perks - flexible hours & days, brings her daughter with her whenever she wants, all holidays paid, vacation, bonuses.

I recently gave her a cash bonus and raised her to 14/hr b/c we just had our second child. She thanked me for both but indicated that 14/hr is in her opinion not a large enough raise. She said she will not leave if we can only continue to pay 14/hr, but would like more. I asked how much more and she said it was up to us. We share her with a family that has 2 year old twins and a newborn. They are paying her (according to her) 18/hr. When she came to us two years ago she was getting 12/hr from my friend for 3 kids - one in school, a 3 year old and a newborn. Given her many perks and flexibility, I thought 13/hr was reasonable.

I'm looking for feedback on what is "reasonable" for her increase? I'm usually home and taking care of the infant at this point, but will be in classes this summer and she will have both kids all day.

Thanks!

What can I do next?

Wow, I don't know where you live, but in the Wilmette, Kenilworth, Winnetka area, the rate is $10.00 for one child.
This is for Northfield Nannies. This is what I use, when my Mom is not available. Also, the rate for a certified pediatric nursing assistant is $10-$15. $10 for one that has only been certified and working for a few years, $15 for a seasoned pro of mnay years. This INCLUDES light housekeeping, by the way.
A cerified nursing assistant (CNA) who does housekeeping for $10 OR a non-nurse for $18?............gee let me think about that :)

It seems to me that $14/hour is plenty for 2 kids, plus the perks. We have a 6 year old and 2 year old twins and I wouldn't expect to pay $18/hour for their care. If you have a good relationship with the other family, it might make sense to talk to them about this. A nanny-share works best when all parties communicate. That said, clearly you like your nanny and want her to stay. Maybe you can find other ways to increase her benefits without costing so much out of pocket...additional vacation days or something?

Good luck.

What I have heard is $14-$15/hour is the norm for 2 kids.

You are being reasonable, however, if you really want her to stay then try offering her $15/hr and see if that will make her happy. If not, then she probably just wants to leave because she's already double-dipping with the other family. Good luck! Remember that it is not easy to find a good caregiver...
