MY one year old is at it again!! Now he is going through this i'm gonna take off my diaper all the time and pee on everything, from daddy's work shoes to the cat. My question is...Is it finally ready to start potty training?? He seems interested in the potty and must be in the room anytime we go and tries to help us by flushing and handing us paper and what not. MY mom-in-law (mother of three boys) says that boys just like to be naked and that he isn't ready that he is too young (16months). My husband also seems to think that he isn't ready and that our son is just doing it to get a rise out of someone. I think he might be ready. What do you all think??

What can I do next?

OK so what you could do is get a potty and put it in the bathroom. Then when you go in take a book and sit with it and have one for him. When he gets used to sitting on it and used to it being in the bathroom then you try sitting him on it with the sit up with a book. I got a book from the library every week that was the book that we read when my 3rd was potty training. That was the book for her to have read every time. Or if he has a favorite book that is the one that needs to be read at this time. Then they get it that it is something that you do that is fun not bad. Do not scold him if he pees on the floor just grab and run for the bathroom. Even if he is done go sit him on the pot.

I would say try to see if you can potty train him. If he doesn't take to it back off and try later when he is a little older. I don't think there is a magical age they have to be to be potty trained. You will know when he is ready. My cousin had her child totally potty trained by 18 months. However she knew she was ready and potty trained really eaisly. Her daughter took right to it. If you son doesn't I would say wait. My daughter wouldn't have anything to do with the potty until over 3 years of age. Each child is different. Good Luck.

I know most people say that boys potty train later than girls, but my daughter potty trained at 18 months. She also showed interest, so we bought her a potty and started encouraging its use. She was out of pull ups and diapers in no time. I don't think it would hurt to at least try it! Maybe, if he sees the "great reaction" he gets when he pees in the potty, he'll quit trying to pee on other stuff!

S. honey, welcome to the land of boys. THey are a wonderful crazy different breed. They like to be naked and strut their stuff and to see fluid come out of themselves and hit the cat is a hoot!!!. He of course has no concept of what he is REALLY doing just that it is funny and makes mommy crazy.
He is so not ready for potty training. Most urologist will tell you that until they can pedal a tricycle, little car etc, they don't have the gross motor skills to hold the urine in their bodies properly and at this age the only person trained is the one taking them in there to potty.

Just do your best. You might show him a little potty and how it works but don't be surprised if you find it full of water or juice with a boat or other toy in it. Just take apic or two for later laughes and try to stay sane.

My darling nephew took his off at this age and stuffed the lining up his nose so feel blessed. lol

If you need to keep him in the diaper, try putting it on backwards (velcro in the back) and putting on pants that are harder to take off - zip and snap rather than elastic waistband. Once he goes several days without removing his diaper, he will likely move on to other ways to make mom crazy. . . all we can do is try to stay one step ahead of them!

They all like to be naked, yours just likes in enough he figured out how to get all his clothes off by himself. My daughter runs through the house naked and I have to chase her down after every bath to get her jammies on her.
Does he tell you in some form that he just peed on the cat or wherever? Does he have words to tell you pee or does he let you know when he's wet or poopy? He doesn't have to go all night with a dry diaper to show he's ready, my 3 1/2 yr old still wears a diaper and soaks it every night, and she's been potty trained for almost a year. My 18 mo old has been asking to sit on the potty and she actually peed once and one time also she told me pee! and pointed and led me right where she had an accident on the floor and took the paper towel away from me and cleaned it up herself! I'm not ready to potty train her although I know its not my choice. My first daughter was hard to train-but I also had a newborn to care for! So I'm hoping my second will be easier and faster. I think you should work with him a bit, he's showing interest wanting to help you so he knows the routine. It can't hurt to try, I use a potty seat that sits on the toilet, and a stool for her to get up on. I don't want to mess with a potty chair, they are gross and stinky. Also, don't freak out when he pees on something, if that is why he's doing it he my really like your reaction. And having him clean it up may help too. Good Luck!!

It's not a male or female thing to want to be naked at that age. I do believe he "gets it" because he's getting a desired reaction from you guys. Matter-of-factly get him to help clean up the mess and give him praise when he pees in the right place. Yes, I agree that this is a potty training moment. You've got a smart boy!

A mom knows her child better than anyone; even better than the father knows his child! Never forget that! Now, 16 months is not too young. If this child knows how to take off his diaper; he knows how to give paper, flush and enjoys being with you in the bathroom; then what are you waiting for? Forget what the grandmother says. He's your child so you already have the upper hand in knowing him. It hurts nothing to begin the training process. In the moment, my children (2 were boys, one girl) were communicating, obviously understanding and able to follow me to the bathroom, they were started on the potty. Once you remove the diapers, do not use Pull-Ups or any type of diaper-like coverings even at night. Put plastic sheet cover on the mattress, under the sheets, to protect the bed. BUT by all means, do not confuse the issue by using diapers at night and training during the day. It's the only way to send a clear message to the child. Be consistent! No need for any rewards other than praise, hugs, kisses and most of allowing the child to participate in his own training by teaching him how to empty the pot into the big toilet and flushing down the pee-pee, then washing his hands! Oh yeah, let's not forget lower the seat cover before the flushing. BOYS are never too young to learn they must lower the seat cover! lol....

It will all go smoothly and your little one will be trained in no time! You'll see it with your own eyes just how ready he is now. Have fun with it. Potty training should be a fun experience for you and your child; never a stressful one.

He might be a little young, but not by much. By 20 months average children are physically ready (I trained my children at this age), so he may be ready a bit sooner. Get the book "Toilet Training in Less Than a Day" by Azrin and Foxx. Use their methods to evaluate his readiness. If he measures up, train him now. Follow their method for the most effective and time-efficient training. It really does take only a day if you follow the program closely.
You'll be so glad you trained him before your next child is born!

Hello,
Sounds like your son is ready. A great book to read is Diaper Free for support. Although you did not use elimination communication fron the beginning, the book is still good for information about potty training- especially that the science as to waiting longer (and longer) isn't really there. Follow your instincts. Sometimes things can be much harder if you miss a child's window of interest and motivation. Blessings, R.

Both of my babies went through this phase of pulling off their diaper, getting naked, and peeing all over things. My middle child it went on forever and ever. She would always pull her diaper off and run behind our recliner and pee, or in her bed and pee all over during nighttime and then she'd wake us up by saying, "I'm wet!" My baby he did pull his diaper off a couple of times but he got out of it.

Try starting to potty train him. When my middle child started this I tried but she wasn't ready. My baby the same thing. But children are different and maybe your child is ready. It doesn't hurt to try.

Good luck. We are still working on potty training.

Sincerely,
A.

I have seen more than one mom suggest that you put his diaper on backwards, and I used this trick myself when my oldest son was little (he is 19 now). Putting the diaper on backwards is a good way to make sure that it STAYS on.

As for him being ready to potty train- the whole point of training is the ability to hold it in until they reach a potty, not the desire to let it out all over the house. I think he may need a little more time.

Hi S. - I'm a mom of two boys. My first was fully trained (except night) by 2.5 and my second - even with speech delays - was trained before 2 years old! I think it definitely depends on the child, but I also think there is a window of opportunity that is often missed. It sounds like you may be in your window with your son, and I would go for it! As I started writing this, my 2 yr old (almost 3) ran in to go #2. I still have to help w/ the wiping, but when I see what they're capable of putting in the toilet, I am so thankful I am not changing a diaper!! Be consistent, give lots of praise, be ready to deal with accidents and I bet you'll see success in no time. Summer is a great time too b/c they can run around w/ little or no clothes on. Good luck!

If you've got the time and energy to work with him, I say go for it. Some kids do train successfully that early. Otherwise, its NAKED TIME!!!! As for the diaper thing, I thought that's why duct tape was created :}

16m is very young, especially for a boy. Most kids don't have enough bladder control to potty train until ~20m. There is nothing wrong in encouraging him and seeing what happens, just don't expect overnight success.

Oh my gosh. Are they kidding? Do you have a potty chair? Put a cheerio in it, tell him to hit the cheerio. And the diaper comes off when he's using the chair or he has to wear the diaper, he'll figure out that if he uses the chair, he doesn't have to wear the diaper. Pleasure/pain, convenience/inconvenience. Great training tools. And all boys like target practice!!!!!!!!!

Good Luck

I think 16 months old is too young to potty train. I think they need to be about 2. Old enough to know and verbalize in advance of going to the bathroom. His pediatrician is a good one to talk to on this. He or she could give you some good info on this. I think if done too young, it can be very stressful on the little guy. In the mean time, I suggest you keep pants on him that he cannot pull off. Good luck.

i say if u think he wants to, show him, don't force it on him but u may get lucky and save some of the 10 diaper changings a day heck even one diaper changing a day would be something just introduce it to him as him teeing or him poopooing. just keep it fun do a little dance when he does it. he's getting close to old enough just introduce it to him and if he does yeah!!! if not well then wait a couple months and if he's still interested try again. just try it, it can't hurt anything! Especially with another one on the way... good luck just keep it fun and happy!

My own son starter potty training at 16 mos and was fully potty trained at age 19 mos, so it is certainly possible that he is ready to potty train. One indicator is if he is able to go all night with a dry diaper. Another is if he can tell you when he is wet.

Have him clean up his own "accidents" - help him associate the feeling of needing to go with the urine that comes out. If he goes on the floor (or cat)have him clean it up.

If you feel he is not physically ready to train, I would suggest putting a onesie on over his diaper (Carters are especially difficult to unsnap). Keep him accountable for his own mess - without being negative or making him feel shame. This will help avoid problems when he is potty training.

Blessings,
D.

I think it is just an age thing to be naked. You could try telling him where to go, but I don' think he is ready to potty train. I had to buy big onsies and keep those on my daughter at that age so she would stop peeing on everything and keep some clothing on.
