So glad you asked; standard polish and removers are toxic. Google "non-toxic nail polish for kids" to get a whole list of articles and alternative products.
Hi Mamas. My 4 year old daughter has asked to have her fingernails painted for a special occasion (her ballet recital). But I am completely unaware of today's nail polish and any issues I should be aware of. I'm wondering if there are brands that are safer or more child-friendly? Any hints you can give me?

Piggy Paints is a kid friendly, non toxic polish for kids. You can buy them on line or in stores (check their store locator).
There are some other brands, Orly, for example who have less toxic polish that don't include formaldehyde, etc.
My son likes his toenails painted which I do on occasion and then just let the paint wear off.
Recently, I saw on The Doctors that it is the nail polish remover that is more harmful than the polish itself. I have no suggestions about a safer nail polish but I know you should use acetone-free remover.
I wouldn't recommend the cheap little kids' polish they sell, like with princesses on it. I tried it once, and it peeled right off her nails the same day. Let us know what you find!
They do make special nail polishes that are child friendly, but I don't know about them. I do know you should not use the fast drying kind. Also, avoid those kiddie kinds. They peel off very easily.
Also, be careful if she is the type of person who bites her nails or puts her fingers in her mouth.
