Nail Bitting 2 Year Old HELP

My 2 year old started bitting her nails about 6 months ago and then stoped because Daddy said he would paint her nails so he painted them for a while and then she completely stoped.
Now she is doing it again and does not care about nail polish and is making her fingers bleed and also chewing on her toe nails and making her toes hurt.
I don't know what to do about it and have told her not to do it but she does any way.
She cries because it hurts but still chews them to the skin.
Any sugestions would be great!
Thank you,
T. S.

So What Happened?

I have an anxiety/panic disorder and so do two of my other children I wonder if this could be what is going on with her, she just stoped breast feeding maybe its stressing her out.
Also there has been a lot of stress in our house hold in the last few weeks due to problems with my mother in law and bills and stuff she might be picking up on some of our stress and that might be another reason.

I agree with the others that you need to get to the root of why she's biting them so badly (or she may just pick up some other habit even if you break this one).
With that said, one thing you can try is making her fingers and toes unapealling for chewing on...make them taste bad! There is a spray called "Bitter Apple" that is sold primarily at pet stores (it is to prevent dogs fron chewing on things). It is TOTALLY harmless, it just tastes HORRIBLE (it uses bitter herbs that are totally non toxic). Spray it on her fingers and toes for a few days...I'll bet she quits (we used it on my hands when I used to chew my nails).

I did read somewhere that it can be from stress or being anxious. The suggestion it had was to try and draw attention elsewhere, like keep busy so they won't have their mind on it as much. Kinda like geting them off a bottle or pacifier.

I would ask her pediatrician. Sounds like perhaps she's dealing with stress by chewing her nails. Or there may be a physical cause. I don't know. Chewing them to the point of causing pain seems serious to me.

I have a 4 year old and a 2 year old. I have biten my nails since I was tiny! I would actually chew on my toenails as a child. I too bite my nails until it hurts to give my children a bath or touch anything. I don't know the reason behind it. Anxiety runs high in my family. Now my kids are seeing me bite my nails...and sure enough, they are both starting. It is such a terrible habit. Think of all the germs you get in your mouth if you aren't a good hand washer! eek! I would try the gross tasting nail polish (if she has any nails left to put them on). It may be a deterrant. Maybe, if you can use a reward system, she may stop. If you can get her to stop or at least lessen the biting and chewing. Upon inspection, let her pick out a goody at the dollar store or something. Sometimes they need something to take their mind off what they are doing. My mom always tells me "Sit on your hands!"...I dunno! I wish you luck!!

it's a hard habit to kick, and if htere's anxiety problems in your family, they could be a manifestation. From one nail bitter herself, it does sound a little excessive that she does it to her toes. I've picked mine with my hands, or with a nail cutter, but not with my mouth.

I've bitten my nails since I was 4. Nothing my parents did made me stop. They tried all the things..hot pepper, and that horrible tasting stuff. I just got used to the taste. Eventually, I learned how much I can bite off without it being too painful. Somedays I still overbite and it hurts a lot the next day.

It's only been in adulthood, with fake nails that I stop bitting. But if hte nails come off, the habit comes back.

I'd check in with the pedi or a family doc. and see what they'd recommend.
