Hi..My son is 3 and we noticed about a month ago that his fingers/toes were peeling like he was getting a new "layer" of skin. I have never seen this before so I chalked up as oh maybe that is what happens when kids go through different phases well its happenening again just not as bad. any idea of what this might be and is it something that I should talk to my doc about??? Thanks

What can I do next?

Hi S.,
I personally had the same thing happen to me and it turned out to be a vitamin D deficiency. I started taking a D supplement and my skin has stopped peeling. You can have his levels tested with a simple blood test and then supplement or just start him on some cod liver oil NOrdic Naturals makes a childrens DHA that is a good source of Vitamin D. Also just 15 minutes per day without sunscreen fully clothed helps the body produce vitamin D.
Take care L.

My kids have had a symptom like that but only after they had strep there hands and feet peeled after it was leaving there body. The dr. recommended putting lotion on the hands and feet.

Hi S.,

I would definitely talk to your doctor and have it checked out but to me it sounds like his hands and feet might be sweating excessively. I know that when my feet stay wet (sweaty) for extended periods of time from having my shoes on too long when it's hot outside I get the peeling between my toes and on my heels. It can happen on hands as well if they're always in the mouth or in water. Keep them dry with some powder might help.

Good luck - S.

You should check with the Dr. it sounds like hand, foot and mouth disease my granddaughter has had that a couple of times it goes away by itself.

If it were just the feet, I would say it sounds like athletes foot. But the hands too? Maybe the doc needs to take a look at it. Good luck.

When I was younger, my fingers would "peel" when I was under stress or experiencing changes (for example, starting kindergarten, when I broke my arm in preschool, high school graduation). Still from time to time when I'm extrememly busy or feeling a little more stressed my cuticles will split or peel a bit. (Never the toes though).
If you're concerned you could talk to your pediatrician or ask for a referral to a dermatologist.
