ok. I have a 3yr old and a 5.5 month old. The older one has a cough for a couple of days now it seems to be worse at night (like all sicknesses) and when he runs around. Now my 5.5 month old has it. is there anything SAFE and EFFECTIVE out there for me to use. I know that a lot of times a humidifier (spelling?) works but so many germs build up in those things. HELP!!! I want them t feel better!!

What can I do next?

Your son could have croup,it usually is at night.

I had a child that had that and I was told to use cool mist and elevate his bed so he isn't sleeping completely flat on his back.

Not sure if that is what is wrong with your son or not but you could still try and see if that helps him at night.

Good luck hun.

Please do not put vicks on the bottom of their feet! It does work but, the reason is because it is absorbed very well and very fast thru the soles of the feet. It is way too much, especially for your baby. I tried it myself one time when I was sick and it made me feel weird and drugged! Use a humidifier, clean it with vinegar and water if you need too. Lots of water, vit C and garlic. The common cold virus can last for up to 6wks. If they get a fever, then it is probably something more than just a cold. Elevate the head when sleeping. Do not give a cough suppresent! Cut down on dairy, which makes them more phelmy.

More than likely it is a cold that is going around right now... My 3 had it and it seemed to last for about 2 weeks...
I give my kids over the counter cough meds. A decongestent will help bring any stuff up easier... (call your ped. if there isn't dosing on the baby...)
When you put them to bed try to have them sleep with the top of their torsos propped up. It helps the drainage if there is some from a post nasal drip from building up in the back of their throat triggering a cough...
Vicks always seems to help. My mom would put it on our chests and a dab on the top of our nose.(I never understood putting it on the feet since you want them to BREATH it in...But some say it works...)
Hot tea is a big hit with my kids. I usually get them sleepy time tea or peppermint tea.
use your mommysense and pay attention to your guys. lots of hugs and cuddles. check the temps. They may have slight on and off fevers.
Other than that if you notice any odd things or if it goes on and on, then go to the dr.

Please do not use over the counter meds especially on the baby. They are not safe and not really effective...it just makes you feel like you are doing something. It has been all over the news latly. The drug companies are acctually changing the label and discouraging useage under 4yrs.
You can use vaporizers and lots of fluids. I also raise one side of the bed so my littleones can sleep better.
I hope everyone feels better soon.
Blessings, K.

I would call the Dr, that is what they are for. My daughter had this last week and I gave her over the counter medicine and it really helped.
I also heard good things about the vicks on the bottom of the feet, can't hurt to try it.
Good luck

I know this is going to sound a bit crazy but trust me, it really works. Put Vicks vapor rub heavy on the bottom of their feet and then put socks on them. It takes a while to work so just give it time. I hope the cough gets better!

Al my friends kids seem to be getting in. Mine for the first time are passing it up. Are you using healthier products? I switched in May to non toxic household cleaners and baby shampoo (Johnson and Johnson have a form of formaldehyde). A lot of these products cause itching, rashes, coughs, asthma, allergies, amongst many others. I switched stores and now my kids are healthy and I'm saving money!! Yippee!
