My Son Will Be 2 Years Old in Two Days and Still Isn't Talking

My son will two monday and all he is able to say is mamma and dada. He understands alot of what we say to him. He understands alot of different commands. I am really concerned why he is still not talking. I have two counsins and their kids are not even a year yet and talks. He talks but I can't understand a word of it. When he talks it sounds like chinese or something. My second issue is he will take his diaper off just about every time he wets in it. Is that a sign that we should start potty training. When we do sit him on the potty chair he will sit there for only a little bit but never go. I even give him a book to keep him enertained for a little bit. But nothing else seems to help.

What can I do next?

Hi T.,

My son was only saying about 5 words when he turned 2 in January and we were referred to the Texas Early Childhood Intervention for speech therapy. Since then, he has learned many new words and started making sentences. It is a family cost share program, so it should not cost more than about $50 per month. Their website is below if you want to check it out.

I babysit children in my home, and I have a little boy who didnt really begin talking until after he was too, he could definitely understand everything, but just didnt have much to say. I would suggest you doing to quite reading/ learning time with him and play games where he has to say what you say or tell you what an object is. After a fwe months if you dont see any improvement then I would be concerned. Boys sometimes just dont talk as soon as girls. I know my 2 boys did not talk until right about 2 or after and my daughter was talking at 16-18 mos. Every child is different. Also if anyone "babytalks" to him this could slow things down.
Good Luck
A. :)

A friend of mine started speech therapy for her little boy right after he turned 2. She went private at first, and later to Early Childhood through the school district. He improved dramatically and says everything so clearly now. He just turned 3 a few months ago and started going to the PRE-SCHOOL PROGRAM FOR CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES (P.P.C.D.). He loves it and is really thriving there. (It's just 2.5 hours a day.) Let me know if you have any questions about it.

Take care. D.

oh my goodness our kids could be twins. Chloe is 19 months and doesn't say too much, but she definately understands most things we tell her. I wouldn't worry about it too much because kids speak in their own time. Einstein didn't speak until 4 so chew on that. Also they say mothers who are very attentive and hop to when there kids need something often speak later.

As for the diaper issue, girl, you have it easy. My daughter will take off her diaper after she goes poo and smears it all over herself, walls, crib, sheets etc. She is still too young for potty training so my only solution is I put a pair of bottoms (long pants, very thin so she doesn't get hot) and a onesie on over the pants. There is no way she can get into that. Hope any of this helps....

Your story sounds similar to mine. However, my son did have some ear infections along the way. So, the decision was made at 20 months to test him. It turns out that he had negative ear pressure and was hearing as though he was under the water. We had tubes put in immediately. The doctors said not to be concerned until he was about 2 1/2, for many of the same reason some of the other responders to your request have stated. However, my best friend in another state is a speech pathologist and she does not believe in sign lang. in that situation (as ECI wanted to encourage) so she suggested that I push for testing and speech therapy. He began speech therapy at 21 months. It took about 8 months but he went from a few words along with a lot of bable ( as your son is) to probably 300 words. He is now 4 and has an unlimited vocabulary. However, he was also diagnosed with a slight case of apraxia. Which would not have been discovered until he was much older if I had decided to listen the the doctors. I am by no means trying to alarm you. I just think that as a mom you should listen to your intuition. If it really concerns you then push forward. I have learned through this process that You are your child's best advocate no matter how well intentioned everyone else is. I drive my son weekly all the way to Sugarland from Spring for speech and occupational therapy. I have search high and low for quality therapy out here and have had no luck. The testing and therapy he has gotten there is incredible. He improves weekly and is not the same child that he was before. If you decide to push forward I would be glad to share some of what I have learned about that process too. I will finish this novel now :) I hope that all goes well for you!
