My Son Wants to Do Gymnastics

So many of you have read that my son has developmental delays in the motor skill area. He didn't walk till he was almost 2 and he still can't ride a bike. So when he came to me and told me that he wanted to do gymnastics I got really excited. We tried the soccer thing and the baseball thing and he just didn't enjoy it. Here is the problem I live in Duncanville and I can't seem to find any reasonably priced gymnastic places around me. I looked into ASI in Cedar Hill and the want $70 for 1 hour a week which seems way over priced. I foudn a couple of places in Arlington and they were decently priced but I am just so unsure as to what place to pick. If you know of any gymnastics place that your child has been to please help me. He is 5 years old.

Oh and one last thing what do people think of the little gym. I have heard from some people that it is geared more towards little ones then the older ones is this true?

What can I do next?

Per the Cedar Hill paper last week, the Little Gym in Cedar Hill closed. It took people's money for membership until the day it closed. Can you believe? The owner was going bankrupt, supposedly. They bought a half-million dollar home in C.H. that they may stand to lose. Hummmmmmmm....BTW, I don't know of another place except Trevino's in Lancaster, I-35 & Beltline area. Not a bad drive from C.H.. Good luck, J.

You might try the closest YMCA (or YWCA if there's one around). The one near us does gymnastics for several different age groups. You might also try getting in touch with the PE teacher at the school your son will attend. Perhaps he/she will be aware of area programs. Have fun!

I'm not sure if you know- The Little Gym in Cedar Hill closed two weeks ago. My daughter went there for 2 1/2 years and we loved it. She is 5 1/2. The owners were great. The atmosphere was warm, friendly, no pressure and non-competitive. ASI and also Trevino's in DeSoto have been recommended to us- we have friends at both places. They are more competition driven than The Little Gym. ASI works on accomplishing goals to reach different levels. We did a trial class there last week. Given your son's development, I would recommend Little Gym. The classes are set up by age and not skill level. There is another location in the Mansfield/Arlington area.

My daughter was 5 and just learned to ride a two wheeler with training wheels. Needless to say, when we got her a tricycle for her 2 1/2 year old Christmas, it sat in the garage for 2 years, but she loved gymnastics since the ripe age of 3. We had her in occupational therapy at 2 and in gymnastics and early childhood music at 3. She has always taken from Trevino's gymnastics. They have been around for 20 years+. The Little Gym is more of a play center, like, drop off your kid and we will entertain them while you shop. They have very few pieces of equipment. The neat thing about Trevino's is that your son can see all of the big kids doing incredible things and have great role models to look up to.

I myself was a gymnast for years and taught gymnastics for 6 years. I am now a Pre-K teacher for Richardson ISD (10 years). A few years back I wanted to get back into coaching preschool gymnastics and visited a class at the Little Gym in Carrollton. I was very concerned about the method of instruction and lack of structure I saw. There were two teachers and four children in the class, but there was no discipline. The kids just ran around jumping on equipment as they pleased. They were learning nothing practical about gymnastics and I was really afraid someone was going to get hurt. I believe children need freedom to explore, but this can be done is a safe and productive way. I would not take my child there and I have friends who've had similar experiences when they took their daughter to a different Little Gym. My advice would be to go visit a class before deciding to put your little boy there.

My daughter took gymnastics at Aerials gym (in Arlington) for a while. We truly loved it. The only reason we aren't there today is because we are so involved with soccer and just needed to let something go. Marsha is the owner. She and her husband run the place. They treat all the kids like their own. I've attached the info below. Good luck!

My daughter also takes gymnastics at Trevino's. She has been going there for years & loves it. She also learns so much, so quickly. I think we pay $58 a month, but I think it depends on the age & class you choose. The cheapest I know of is $52 a month. Which hey, it is better than $70. : )

We live in the Duncanville area and our 5 year old son and 3 yr old daughter just started gymnastics. We take them to Trevinos gymnastics off of 35E and Parkerville. It's about 15-20 min away for us. We pay $58 for 1 hr a week for JOsh and $52 for Rebekah.

Hope it helps...the kids LOVE it. We did football for Joshua last season...he seems to enjoy this more.

Hi! I have two daughters (almost 8 & 6). I put both of them in gymnastics at ages 2 and 4. My older daughter was a bit uncoordinated and gymnastics helped considerably. I started with a mommy and me class for my 2 year old and a preschool class for my 4 year old. My older daughter stuck with recreational gymnastics for 3 years and then decided to move on to something new. My younger daughter LOVES gymnastics and is now a part of the competitive team. Gymnastics is a great form of exercise.

We go to Trevino's Gymnastics. The address is technically Lancaster, but the gym is located off of I-35 and Parkerville. The phone number is ###-###-####. They also have a very informative website - just search for Trevino's Gymnastics.

FYI - I have learned over time that there are recreational gyms like ASI or Little Gym and there are professional gyms that offer both recreational and team classes. My opinion is that the professional gyms are better equipped with safety features. I myself initially considered ASI (there is one in Cedar Hill where I live) and after attending a birthday party at an ASI location, I was so glad I opted for a professional gym.

I hope this information helps. Good luck!!

My son had motor skill delays and also didn't ride a bike until he was 7. We did Metroplex Gymnastics and were very happy with them. They are in Garland but I think they have a mid-cities location.
You know what really helped my son - was occupational therapy. It is a lot like gymnastics. They do alot of swinging in special swings, jumping and obstacle type stuff. Just a thought.
It should be cheaper than $70.00/hour and your insurance company may pay for it.
Little gym is fun but it is expensive and is a little more geared towards younger kids. Your son would still have fun.
Good luck.

My son takes Gymnastics from Irving Dynamics. It is in South Irving. It is $40 a month, and if you pay before the 1st they will take $2.00 off. I don't know about anything around you, but $70 sure sounds like a lot. I will tell you that my friend has her little girl in the Little Gym in South Arlington and that is what she pays. Her little one is 3. ASI must have gone up. When my son was a little younger he went there and it was only $50 a month. Good luck!
