My Son's Beautiful, Curly, Fuzzy Hair

My son was born with some of the most beauitful hair I've ever seen on a girl or boy. It's soft and brown and curly - the kind of curly we used to pay big money for when perms were all the rage. Also, because he's never had a haircut, it's also long - when wet it goes to his shoulders and when dry it just spirals up to above his collar. When it first drys it looks great but inevitably he's starts to look fuzzy. Cutting it is just not an option but I would like to know if anyone can recommend a gentle product that I can use with him to keep his curls looking awesome and not so fuzzy.

So What Happened?

Ladies, thank you for all of the suggestions. As I said, I'm just not going to cut his hair any time soon. Not even a trim because salons never just trim they CUT. I LOVE his curls and I'm so afraid that cutting it might make his curls disappear. It's not as if he'll never get a hair cut but I'm holding out indefinitely. By contast, my girls haven't had a hair cut either but their hair has barely grown out compared to his - the injustice of it all! :)

I completely forgot about the Aveda line, I will definitely check it out the next time I'm at Oak Brook. Also, there's a KidSnips at Oak Brook so I can go and talk to them about my son's hair needs and their products. There was a product at the Carol's daughter website that might work but I don't want to pay for shipping on just a $9 product so if anyone knows a salon in the Chicago area that carries this line please let mek know! As for the Fructis product, I do have one of their products - smoothing milk for instant smoothing and frizz control - that I use on my hair. We have a play date tomorrow so I might give it a try with a small amount and see how well it does. I'll let you all know!

My friends kid also had this issue. A very small trim (watch the hairstylest like a hawk though!) usually helps. Some one told her that after his bath take normal conditioner and put a little of it in his hair and leave it (the leave in conditioners don't work, it has to be regular). Thats what she does an her little boy's locks hold up much better now.
Good luck!

First thing I use on my daughter's hair is leave in conditioner. There are kid's brands available, but I switched to Fructis, and that worked fine. Then, as much as you hate to cut it, he really does need a trim. That will help a great deal. I know how you feel because I didn't get my daughter's haircut until she was almost 3, but really, it helps clean up the ends, and makes it look better. And that's not just from me, but from professionals as well. Take him somewhere and tell them he just needs a trim. Also, you can use curl tamer if you are getting pictures taken or something. That helps too.

God luck!

G.,
I could have written your exact post (aside from the triplet part!). I have 2 boys (4 years and 17 months). My 17 month old has the exact same hair that you described (and a haircut is not an option for us either).

We've tried a few products, but they all weigh down his hair and give it a greasy look. You may find a product that works well, but what I have found is, brushing it "out" in the morning. You would think that this would be the last thing that you would want to do, but it somehow the brushing gives the curls what they need to "spring" back into shape.

I have bone straight hair, so I have no idea what to do with these curls, but I experimented one day with the brush (well, mostly I was seeing how big of an afro he could get):-) but it ended up being the best thing I could do.

Maybe you want to try that before you go out and get a product. If you do find something that works better, would you let me know?

I think if you gave the hair a little trim it will keep the curls and not get fuzzy. The salon might be able to help you pick out hair products

My sister has two girls ages 4 and 2 who both have curly curly hair. I know that she uses Aveda confixor on both of them. It's a really gentle gel and all Aveda products are natural. A little bit goes a long way with this product.

My 3 year year old also has curly hair and I use a mousse foam by Circle of Friends, it's mango flavor and I buy it at Kids Snips where I get his hair cut. It smells really good too. I just wet my hands, run them through his hair to get it a little wet and then work in the mousse by scrunching his hair. It's really light and depending how much or how little you use, it can get a little crunchy. I use 3 squirts and it holds his curl most of the day, sometimes even after his nap. To help the curls come back, I just wet my hands and run them through his hair again. It's a bit expensive, about $10 for a bottle, but I haven't found anything else that works as well.
Good luck. You might even be able to find it online.

There was an article (for moms hair) in a summer issue of Parenting. It recommended a leave in conditioner, I believe for frizz. It was a green bottle, which I think was Fructis.
I think you could get away with using a product if you are not ready to trim his hair.
If you do decide to trim it, you might be able to trim the ends yourself, if you think you could do it safely. I would guess that the curls would hide any mistakes for the most part.
Good luck.

My son had super curly hair when he was a baby and when he turned 2 i ended up getting him a haircut in place of using products on his hair and the curls disappeared! I dont know why that happened my husband and I both have super curly hair. My four year old daughter was born with the same hair and again for her second birthday I got her a trim and the curls were not there anymore, now my 2 year old daughter has the same curly hair and I decided not to cut it so I started using the Aussie brand (I use that brand for my curly hair as well) leave in conditioner and it does the work, her curls dont end up frizzy or greasy looking they are perfect. and I use a hair pick on her and my hair. I learned years ago that using the brush on my own hair would frizz it up even more. hope that works

My daughter has beautiful red curls that do the same thing, especially when she sweats. I don't do much with it most of the time, but for pictures and things I was told to use a moisturizing/shine syrum. I just use a very small amount and not much of it actually gets on her scalp, but she's 3.5, you might ask at a salon if there's something better

Carol's Daughter has great products for kids with curly hair. I believe the website is carolsdaughter.com. I used to buy the curl spray for my son. It is a bit oily and intended for ethnic hair, but it works great!
