My Son Obsessed with Round Things, Is It Good?

My younger son is close to 16-month old. I can’t remember when he got interested in round lids. He likes turning a lid open and then screwing it back, and really enjoys this process. Now wherever and whenever he sees a lid, he will ask for it, and if he sees a round thing on the book, he will try to open it, so funny, right? And even he sees a well lid on the street, he will stop and try to open it. Of course, he also plays with many other toys, but I think he is obsessed with round things. Is it good to him?

What can I do next?

Some of it is just excited about knowing this thing really well and some just who he is and what he's drawn to. If it starts to worry you because you think it's a little compulsive just redirect him to something else. Yep thats a circle but hey look at this great square. Can you help Mommy find another one? I have a 5 year old and he goes through periods of focusing in a little too much on certain things and this really works with him.

He has discovered that he can accomplish something -- changing a closed container into an open one! Doing it repeatedly seems "obsessive" only to adults; to him, it's just fun and means he can make things happen. So of course he wants to do it over and over and over. "Obsessed" labels it negatively. It's an entirely normal thing, and once he has another kind of achievement, like opening a different kind of container or putting a lid tightly on a plastic bowl or whatever, he will want to do that over and over then. It shows he's developing good motor skills, so let him do it, and offer him other things to do with his hands too. Keep him busy so he doesn't get bored.

He's 16 months old.
He's not obsessed with anything.
Try using the word fascinated instead.
My son was fascinated with keys and vacuum cleaners.
Don't ask my why.
He's 15 years old now and helps me keep track of my keys and happily volunteers to vacuum.

It's a win-win.
Why worry?

Light switches go on/off.
Lids go on/off.
Socks, shoes, clothes, the water faucet........
On/off.

Off/on.
It's not good or bad, it's just pretty much the way things work.
He's figuring it out.

Sounds like a normal kid to me.

Its fine!
It is all developmental based.
They do things like that.
They do things repeatedly, because that is how a kid/baby learns.
Its natural learning and exploring. That is how they learn.
And, it is helping his fine-motor skills, too.
And they are learning concepts too.

Its all fine.
Many more phases to arise.

My daughter, at that age LOVED.... pulling Kleenex out of the box.
Ugh.
So then we had a mountain of Kleenex, out of the box. Perfectly good unused Kleenex.
And she liked to cover us with it.... one time she covered my Husband with tons of Kleenex, as he napped on the couch. I took a photo of it. It was funny!

He's probably just delighted that he's figured out that round things (sometimes) unscrew. It's a major breakthrough. A month from now, he'll probably be just as fascinated with something else. I wouldn't worry, as long as he's ALSO interested in doing other things.

Would you rather him be obsessed with sharp, pointy things? ;)

I'm sure it's a phase. My 13 month old is obsessed with socks this week. Last week is was dinosaurs. Next week may be his sisters dolls, WHO KNOWS?

Sounds totally normal to me. My son (2.5) has gone through this type of thing with everything! He'll have about 3 weeks where he's all about...whatever. (Lately, it's been tape measures.) Then he moves on to something else.

Sounds like your little guy is just discovering the world around him.

Love what Shane said.
Try the word: intrigued, curious or fascinated.

Toddlers are not obsessed--they are learning about the world.

With my son, anything round was a ball. In books, even pictures of plates or the moon had him announcing, "Ball!"

Kids love objects they can affect some kind of change over - that's why so many toddlers love slamming doors. Throwing a ball or unscrewing a lid gives them that feeling of, "Hey! Look what I can do!"

Well, it sure seems "good" to him! LOL
Kids go through phases of fascination.
Write them down as he grows so you can remember all of them!
