i need help trying to find free or affordable tuturing for my son who is in 2nd grade. his teacher (who seem to be wonderful and truly concerned with helping him) has tested him and his reading level is about mid-first grade. i can not afford to send him to a place like kumon or sylvan but need to find a way to help him. i am so upset about all of this because i do not know what to do to help him. when i try to spend time reading with him, he ends up getting upset and frustrated and we get no where. please let me know of any suggestions you may have on this matter.

What can I do next?

Hi K.,
I am a teacher who is on leave to take care of my daughter. I am currently tutoring and I charge about half of what the tutoring sessions charge. If you are interested let me know. I am not sure where you live but I am near Hills. and Dale Mabry. Good Luck!

Hi K.,
I think most public schools have a program called ELP (extended learning program) You may want to ask your teacher if they offer that. It is free. I hope this helps.

Hi. Have you checked with his school? Certain schools have free tutoring if they were given a bad grade and also if he recieves free or reduced lunch. It is part of the "No Child Left Behind Act". If not there are also some churches that give free tutoring. I was in the same boat last year with my son. He past 2nd but it was hard. Try some of those. But, don't give up on him either. He needs you let me know if none of those work out I will see if I can find more.

There are many ways to improve his fluency - which includes reading aloud to your child. Another innovative way is to turn down the volume on the TV (mute) so that the closed-captioning appears and have him read that aloud as it appears on the screen. I know for a fact that nickelodeon and disney have that feature available.

It's a great way to get them to read and easy-sell for you.

Try word searches too. There's a great website online that you can create your own FREE word searches:

Another fun thing to build kids' reading skills at this age is mad libs - kids love them! Here's a website for that, too:

Have fun and good luck!

Read TO him, every day, every chance you get. I would HIGHLY recommend the parenting book _The Read Aloud Handbook_. Lots of inspiring stories for you, plus recommendations for books your son might be interested in. Where do you live? What school is he at? I may be able to help. Feel free to email me.

I second what the other E. said, I have two family members who applied to be tutors in Hillsborough County at different elementary schools. They said it is free , the parents just need to request it. Also you might search afterschooling or reading help online. There are sure to be some ideas. One thing is to read plenty of books that are easy for him to read. So if that means reading books that have only 3 letters in them, that will help build his confidence. Also reading books that are only slightly hard for him, but you read one line, he reads the next. And always try and stop before he gets overwhelmed. It doesn't sound like he is that far behind though, keep working with him, but try not to feel like it is a HUGE thing. That only puts pressure on him and you. I have a first grader who loves to read books and take the quizzes on bookadventure.org . They have quizzes on a lot of the Dr. Seuss books and similar. Also you said you have 3 boys, are any of them older than him? If so they could read together or read to him. That is always good for them! By the way what part of town are you in? ~E.

Hi K.- First of all DON'T WORRY! All children are different & he will come around, I would suggest making everyday that he comes home a certain schedule. I have a son that was struggling in second grade last year too. I let him have 45 min of tv when he got home daily and then it's homework time. NO ONE was allowed to interrupt for that following hour. Make sure his siblings understand this and he gets no distractions for that time period. I would make it "Family reading hour" and my daughter who is three would practice writing her letters too! My son & I would take turns reading page by page and then I rewarded him with stickers or a new pencil. Then at night I would read to him for 15 min before bed. Don't give up, just take it day by day and yes, the schools have to provide help if they are behind, you definately should ask for tutoring if it has not been mentioned to you already. GOOD LUCK!

I feel your pain. I have a little one that was there last year. I had to teach myself how to be tutor. we took time everyday. Not long just about 15 mins. We had fun doing it. we read books but we also read lables, instructions...whatever we could. I also hd her play on www.starfall.com it is a free site that her teacher recommended. If you have older children have them read to him even if is just for a few minutes. Hope this helps.
