My Son Is Speaking in the Third Person.

My son is 4 1/2 and in preschool. He has progressed so much since he has been attending school. However, it seems as though we just can't get thru the third person stage. Every time he talks about himself, it is in the third person. If anyone has any ideas or has been through this, I would appreciate the advice.

What can I do next?

well first though is that how you raised him? like for instance, do you or did you say does timmy have to go potty, or does timmy want something to eat? I know my children where pretty smart at that age and how far in age 4 is he? He should grow out this but just keep a weather eye on him and just keep correcting it. or maybe possibly if you can and have the skills to make him see it for himselve mite be an eye opener.

I just wanted to let you know that your son isn't alone. I actually ended up taking my son in for speech and they told me just to keep working on it and to repeat the sentence that he has said in third person, but rephrase it for him with I and have him repeat it back to you. Believe it or not it does work over time, but what she also said too is that eventually they all grow out of this phase just some are later then others. Good Luck and just give it time. M. B

My son will be 3 in a week and he also does this. As far as I can tell they do it because when we talk about them we use their names and this is how they refer to themselves. I just try to correct him by replacing his name with "I".

My son did the same thing when he was around the age of 4. He eventually grew out of it, they will get tired of it. I would not worry about it, kids do all sorts of things like that and eventually they stop.

My son went through this ( and still does from time to time) but if you think about it...
Elmo ALWAYS talks in third person..."Elmo is going to do this, or that" You know what I mean? I really believe this stage is totally normal, a part of grasping verbs-tail end, and will pass soon enough. My son, who is three, does the same thing from time to time. I remind him that I, and WE, and US, and ME, and YOU will pass the ball. or YOU will eat and then play (to displace Elmo and bring forth real verbs in essence). I am sure this is all a part of learning, and I would not worry. He is probably learing this from TV or other kids watching TV, or BOTH -seeing he is in school and around other kids viewing the same kinds of things.
I would just have fun with it while you can. He is still little and cute, you know?? This time will pass very quickly, and then what silly things can you say to him? Suck up the young time while you can. Suck up the cuteness before it is too late!! Don't put him down for this. Love him for this!!! He is only this age once!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
