Hi Mama's!

My son has a left temporal arachnoid cyst (on his brain he is 5yrs old) This Sat he is having brains surgery. They are going to cut a 4x4 piece of his skull and put a shunt in to drain it.

Have any of you Moms been through this?

How long was the recovery?

How am I going to make it through this!
What can I expect?

I am very worried about the surgery and I can not express that to my husband I am trying to keep him calm.

Can you all please keep Dylan A. in your prayers!!!
Thank you in advance!

A little back ground: he has had it since he was in the womb. We have monitored it by MRI every year. Doctors were hoping that it would decrease and not grow. Some children out grow them. Not our Dylan. It was 7mm last year and this year its 10mm! It's growing way to fast.

What can I do next?

I just said a prayer for Dylan A. and will continue to keep him and you in my prayers. My son had an arachnoid cyst and hydrocephalus so we met with a doctor at CHOP while I was still pregnant. My son was to have the surgery when he was born. The Neurosurgeon convinced us that the shunt part of the surgery is actually quite simple and is the first surgery that a resident will do. It was my understanding that my son's cyst was a result of the hydrocephalus and it would go away once the shunt was put in place. I do know 2 other people with shunt surgery and they were both home the next day. Hugs and more prayers to you.

I will say a prayer for you, daddy, and Dylan. Call the surgeory center and ask them to describe the days events. How is it going to go? You will check in and then what? What should you bring? How long does it last? Who is allowed to come? Ask a lot of questions and get a feel for what to expect. That will take a lot of the scary out of it for you and for Dylan. Ask what they do to help kids not be afraid? Most childrens hospitals have colorful blankies and I know my girl was taken to surgery in a little red wagon. See if they have a psychologist or someone on staff that helps parents through the stress. Call your pastor or even your moms pastor. It really helped having our pastor pray over us, my child, and the surgeons before I let my girl go with the drs.

I will certainly keep your precious little boy in my prayers.

I know this must be so very frightening for you.
I will pray for the doctors and surgeons as well.

Your little boy needs you to be strong and calm right now so he won't be afraid.
You can fall apart when it's all over and they tell you he's going to be okay. Then you can tell him that your tears mean you're happy.

I'll pray for you to have strength.
Please let us know how it goes.

Best wishes.

Your in my prayers. My mama always told me when my son was little and needed steriods for his asthma and I was scared to give it to him, you've got to trust someone! The docs know what they are doing and he is in good hands. Hoping for a quick recovery for your baby (and his mama!)
