My Son Is Getting Tubes in His Years

Please forgive me if this is a stupid question. We have noticed over the last year or so that my son seems to be having trouble hearing. He has failed two hearing tests at school. We've had him to the doctor 3 or 4 times. They said he had fluid built up in his ears which is causing him to not be able to hear. They've tried several rounds of anti-biotics and nasal sprays. So, the last resort is getting tubes in his ears. My question, I know he'll have to wear ear plugs when swimming (which is his favorite thing to do) but is he going to be able to hear at all with the plugs in? I won't worry about it when he's swimming with us but the summer camp he's going to is scheduled to go swimming a couple times a week. So, I would worry about him hearing the camp counselors, life guards or other kids if they are calling his name for anything.
I didn't think about this part when we were at the doctor.

Thanks

I think if they know he has the plugs in they can be more hands on. If they see him doing something risky they can have someone go to him and touch his shoulder to get his attention.

It would be about the same if they had him where he can't hear them right now....the ear wax plugs should be similar to how he hears now.

After getting the tubes in he will be better, it may take time but he will hopefully be "healed".

My grandson that is 3 was found to be deaf. He didn't even respond to the bass drum being banged behind his head at the doc's office. They put tubes in and he was so freaked out! Everyone had to learn to talk quietly to him so it wouldn't startle him. He was young, maybe 8-10 months old when they did this surgery.

I think it is the best thing in the world. Our grandson that lives with us had them done. The gas they use has more of a chance of him waking up disoriented and loud but it wears off in minutes and he will be back to normal. Regular anesthesia, IV kinds, do not have similar side effects, they wake up like they have had a long nap.

I hope you have a wonderful experience with this. We did and would do it again in a heartbeat. The outcome has been remarkable.

My kids have had 5 sets of tubes between the three of them and they have never worn plugs for swimming. Our ENT said it was only necessary if they were in lake/murky/pond type water. Our kids only swim in chlorinated pools and they have very limited underwater action in the ocean on beach vacations, so it wasn't necessary. We never had any issues not using plugs, so unless your ENT specifically insists that he wear them, I wouldn't bother.

The only stupid question is the one not asked. This is NOT a stupid question.

My son had tubes in his ears once - we didn't HAVE to use plugs unless we were swimming in the ocean. Our ENT said he was fine unless he was going DEEP in the water.

Hearing with the plugs in is fine. There are wax ones that work well. You can get them at a grocery store they are near the allergy and sinus meds.

A., it's a good question - don't feel silly asking it! I cannot remember if my son had trouble hearing with his. So sorry! So I don't know the answer. However, if your son picks a bright color for his plugs, people will know that he is wearing them, and someone will touch him to get his attention. The counselors will know too and probably assign him a "buddy" to help with just this thing.

It's certainly something to talk to his counselors about.

Hope that helps, and maybe someone else will answer your actual question!

My daughter had several sets of tubes starting when she was 8 months olds. They helped alot with the fluid and infections. As she grew they fell out and the infections started again. We would get new tubes and the infections/fluid would stop. They helped her ALOT. Our ENT said she did not have to use tubes unless she was in the lake. As long as the water she was in was treated water then she was fine to not use tubes for swimming or taking a bath. She did not like the water to get in her ears though after the tubes. She would make sure to cover her ears when I would rinse her hair. I guess when water got in them it felt funny. She is now almost 5 and we have been tube free and infection and fluid free for about 1 1/2 years now. I think she finally out grew it.

My daughter had to have tubes placed in her ears twice after multiple ear infections treated with abx. As you likely know, they fall out after awhile. Most kids have success with the tubes. My daughter didn't have any infections with the tubes but started having them again as soon as the tubes fell out. We started cranio-sacral treatment and they were a god-send. If she started to show symptoms we would immediately head over to her c-s therapist and she would nip the infection in the bud. I have heard the same about chiropractic and health insurance pays for this. At 12 years old, it seems she is finally growing out of this propensity for these infections.

And, my daughter did not have to wear earplugs when swimming unless she was underwater a lot. Good luck!!

If there's still time please try chiropractic for a month first! I've seen it work for this issue with my own kids and several others. So much safer and easier than surgery, worth a try!

I think he would hear the same as he does now with plugs in. If he has hearing problems they would improve with tubes and ear plus would just make it how he is now. Both of my kids had the surgery. It is well worth it. 20 minutes, no issues after.

And as others said pools and the tub no ear plugs. Just lake water.
