I would like to get something all natual or very close too for eczema for my son who is almost a year. I want some sort of wash that is gentle on his skin and something soothing to get rid of the patches. They are sometimes in his scalp and on his legs especially in the winter. Let me know what other moms do.
I use baby weleda calendula products (baby wash and cream) for my daughter's eczema. It really helps and it's gentle. There are no harmful chemicals either. You can pick them up at a local co-op or whole foods store but you can save a lot by going to vitacost.com. Good luck!

Eucerin - Auqufor. Best stuff I ever used. I used it for cradle cap and it worked wonders within minutes. I've also used it on a 2 year old with eczema and it took away the patches. Eucerin also makes a gentle body wash that also helps!
Hope this is helpful

Hi L.:
I don't have personal experience with this, but I will pass on what i've heard. Have you tried the California Baby line? I love it. Several women who have children with eczema love the Calming Botanical Moisturizing cream. All of their products are made for children and sensitive adults, including the washes. Also, i've heard that you should try not to bathe a child with eczema everyday because it makes it worse. Good Luck!

Hi L.,
I have two kids (13 and 2) and they both have eczema. For the little one I bathe her every other day with Johnson and Johnson Head to Toe wash (as opposed to every day unless she really needs it) and every night she gets a little bit of hydrocortisone cream (over the counter) on the patches themselves to help with itching and then I make sure she gets a good amount of lotion (we like Eucerin Calming Creme because it has no fragrance or dyes and it has oatmeal in it) This is especially important during the winter when the heater makes the air in your home very dry.
Hope that helps!
Also, I think Aveeno makes a baby wash but I'm not sure about shampoo. You can use a touch of head and shoulders once a week to help moisturize his scalp just be very careful not to get it in his eyes.

My now 11-yr-old sone had bad eczema (still has bouts of it here and there)...
I truly can't remember if I used it when he was this young (I don't think so), but teetree is wonderful. It is naturarlly, but can sting--that's why I think it would be a probably for a baby...but, there may be products that have it...?
I wonder if burts bees has some product--they have a great line of personal care.
You might call Vermont Soap Company in Middlebury, VT. There line of personal care items are great and they are all natural. The staff is Extremely helpful and it's a great local business.

OLIVE OIL. Arbonne didn't work for my baby. Neither did any traditional cream (i.e. Aveeno). I only soap her up once a week (except for her diaper area and hands of course)and i use Burt's Bees buttermilk soap for that. after her bath I slather her in olive oil until she's shiny. then she runs around naked until it absorbs--too cute! I use a humidifier in her room at night too. These are the only strategies (and the least expensive!) that have done anything. When she wakes up in the morning her skin is buttery smooth, and her pedi commented that her skin looks better than most toddlers he sees! we do have a prescription steroid cream for really bad flare ups, but since I started the olive oil, we haven't had to use it. it absorbs surprisingly quickly.

Hi L.,
My 10 month old has the same problem and I have tried everything. I, like yourself, prefer natural products and I will not use a steriod cream as recommended by our pediatrician. Anyway, I just found the product which may be the miracle cure! No, it is not Arbonne! It is Dr. Bronner's & Sun Dog's Magic organic body balm (all natural ingredients: jojoba oil, beesewax, avacado oil, hemp oil.) I just got it and I saw a HUGE improvement after only ONE application on my little guy. I also have eczema on my hand it looks great also! As I said I just found it so I can't comment on the long term effects but I am hopeful and for $3.75, what the heck, give it a try! I have 3 children, 2 of them suffer with eczema. I bathe them with an Aveeno oatmeal bath that I buy from the local drugstore. I then lotion them with Renew, a cream that is natural, and could be found on melaleuca.com. It is highly recommended for eczema/extremely dry skin, and is non-greasy. It works for them. I no longer use prescriptions for them. They even have trial sizes, that I send my 6 year-old to school with. I don't sell, but I started shopping from the site when I decided to become more conscious about the products I use around the house, especially with children.

Hi L., I am a new Mamasource member and yours is the first email I am responding too! I have the perfect product for your sons condition. It's the ABC line from a company called Arbonne International. I'm an independent sales consultant for the company and I can't rave about it enough. all of our product is botanically based, ph correct, hypoallergenic, dermatologist tested, free of chemicals, frangrences and dyes and there is no mineral oil (which is VERY bad for your skin. Specifically our ABC body oil is used by thousands for eczema (adults included) and there are tons of testimony's about how children were actually on prescription strength medicine for their eczema which did nothing and Arbonne completely cleared it up. In fact my niece suffers from the same thing and the Arbonne is the only product that has worked so far! I would also suggest the baby wash as well which is very gentle. I have product sample I can send you if you want to try it?! Just let me know. I'm not sure how this website works so I guess I'll just wait for a response from you. Hi L.,
I have a 4 1/2 year old son and he has a severe case of exczema too. I am buy from Melalueca and since I've been using their products my son has had little to no trouble! They have shampoos, lotions and other body care items. They also have household cleaning supplies called Eco-Sense which are all-natural and will help with things your son comes in contact with to stop the irritation and allergy to the ingredients in regular cleaning products. One in particular is called Sol-U-Guard Botanicals. I want you to know, that unlike someone just before me said, Melaluca is not a parymid scheme. I do not sell these products and get no money off it. You can sell it as a business but it is not a requirement. If you would like to just try the products or some of them I can get them for you to try and you then do not have to commit to anything. If these products did not work and I did not see such a wonderful change in my home environment I would not be telling you about them. Again, I get no profit other than knowing that you and your family are living healthier lives! Please contact me if you would like to try the products or find out more info. Eczema is partly caused by allergies. Although certainly you should keep him moisturized, you should try an elimination diet to see if you can figure out what he might be reacting too. My son was sensitive to milk at that age, but not formula or cheese (must have been the amount of lactose) and he would break out terribly, especially on his rear end. Eggs, milk, wheat, soy and nuts seem to be the bad ones for a lot of kids. Eczema is also common on children who later develop asthma related allergies, and allergies to peanuts and nut butters, according to my allergist. Also switching to natural products for cleaning could help clear it up.

Most often this happens with adults as well. I believe most of these problems come from not rinsing shappoo's, body washes, and soaps off properly. Most people don't spend enough time on rinsing off well. I know as I've been guilty of the same thing.
Since we are dealing with a child, I would make sure the doctor sees the problem and makes a recommendation to what should be used to clear the problem up.
On myself, after realizing what was causing the problem....after rinsing well, I've used baby oil which healed the problem.

I was just talking to a new mother whose baby had cradle cap, which is the dark stuff that forms on the baby's scalp and, no matter how hard you try, will not go away. Washing and various creams never helped with my newborn daughter.
My friend's solution turned out to be that the baby had an allergy, which, when the offending food was removed, caused the cradle cap to disappear. That may be your solution.
Also, the dryness of winter will make any skin dry out.So, solution for that is to not bathe so often.Or you could use a moisturizer after every bath.Just make sure it doesn't contain petroleum products. Lanolin, aloe, bees wax are among many lotion ingredients that are GOOD for the skin.

Oh L.! I can completely commiserate with you. My two oldest boys had eczema and horrible diaper rashes from the days they were born. Nothing helped...over the counter, prescription, Melaleuca, nothing.
When my middle son was an infant, a friend introduced me to Arbonne. Their Baby Care Line has been a Godsend and I still use it on all of my children who are 5 months, 4 years and 7 years.
My oldest used to get the patches all over while my middle son used to get just dry, flakey skin all over. He had diaper rash though that was just horrible. He also got the eczema on his cheek so bad that he would wake up bleeding from scratching in his sleep. I was so upset about not only the discomfort they must have been in but I was worried about my middle son's face scarring!
I am happy to report that the Arbonne Baby Care line did wonders for my sons. They tend to get a little dry in the winter but nothing bad at all and it barely lasts because I just up the lotion use when I notice it.
I wash all my children with the wash, use oil on their scalps if need be (did wonders for the baby's cradle cap!!), and the lotion on their bodies. In the beginning when my oldest's patches were so bad, I used a product called Rejuvenating Cream as well to help boost healthy healing. I can't say enough about these products and even our pediatrician is very happy with them.
They are botanically based and specially formulated for babies' sensitive skin. Arbonne's motto is Pure, Safe, Beneficial and they do not believe in using any unnecessary or harsh chemicals. If they can't think of a safe way to make the product, they don't make it. (I keep asking about hairspray and that was the answer I have repeatedly been given.)
If you'd like information, please don't hesitate to email me at ____@____.com. I would be happy to answer any questions and even help you out placing an order for you to try.
I wish you all the best and comfort for your little one.
Hugs,

When my son was 1-2yrs he had a bit of eczema or contact dermatitis... behind his legs, arms and sometime face. My advice: use VERY little soap on his body when taking a bath. And a very mild; Dove (white bar) when you do. Bath every other day, the less bath time the less dry skin occurs. I used both Aquaphor and Crisco shortening (the kind you use to grease a baking pan/ not the spray) sounds gross but it REALLY helped. (my pediatrician in Bklyn recommended both)

Hello L.,
I myself grew up with eczema and my little girl who is 3 years old has it too. For years I tried finding just the right products and solutions for myself and then for her.
I don't recommend steriod creams at all because over time they stop working and the skin is never really the same.
What you do want to do 1st and most importantly is watch your little ones diet. This has helped me and my little one 100%:
1. NO Dairy Products NO BEEF especially
2. NO Wheat or Shellfish but regular "unshelled" fish is great to keep in the diet.
Next I would like to recommend a wonderful bath time product from NuSkin (I do not work for them nor do I sell their products)
Also we drink Himalayan Goji Juice and will also be drinking the New GoChi Juice from Freelife Iinternational. It is great for your health and little ones can drink it as well. I swear by it because it has so many great benefits AND it has just about put a stop to our eczema break-outs so it has some anti-inflammatory benefits as well.
Also, as I got older I added Flax Seed-Primrose Oil Vitamins along with my regular Multiple Vitamin to my diet and it works wonders.
I hope this helps and if you need pictures of our skin for proof just let me know. I will be more than happy to send them to you.
Hugs,
T.

WOW - looks like you stuck a note with some people. I bet you didn't think you'd get such a response, did you? Arbonne or Melaleuca?? My vote is for Melaleuca. I do purchase all my household and personal care products through them becuase they are non-toxic and free of harsh chemicals (and, yes, you can just purchse w/o having to sell). Anyhow, they do have some great products that have cleared my girlfriends family's eczema completely (no out breaks for 3 years). As you've read, Renew, is one of Melaleuca's products. However, if you're washing your baby's clothes in detergents with toxins & harsh chemicals or using a baby soap with them in it as well, Renew alone, or any other product for that matter, probably will not solve the problem. Look for "quanturnium 15" or "Q-15" in your products and if you find them, throw them away - it's formalydahyde to give products a longer shelf life. If you'd like, I can give you my friend's name and number if you'd like to call her personally. Let me know.

Our doctor recommended a humidifier in the babys room especially when more heat is being used during the winter months. Also, try limiting baths that can dry the skin even further. A lotion named kiss my face sold in drug stores is very helpful in keeping the skin moisturized. You may also try baby oil after baths to moisturize the skin. When breakouts are bad, we use 1% hydrocortizone cream. It can be used as a preventative if used on weekends only to keep the break out from occuring.
These are a few tips that work for us.

The prescription steroid cream from the doctor worked, but I hated using it on him. This year I found a new cream called Psorzema creme made by Derma E and it's all natural and it works everywhere on his body but his head (I find it hard to get it through his hair onto his scalp). I got the cream at a health food store in California, but I think they sell it at Mrs. Greens. And for his head now, I use the hydrocortizone once a week like the other mom recommended and that seems to help.

Arbonne sells Skin Conditional Oil that works. Also they sell Cleansing Gel that is good in the tub.
After cleansing w/ Skin Cond Oil (and not bathing for too long as this could dry out the skin) then apply skin cond oil and then put Arbonne's Body Lotion on (all from the Intelligence Line).
If you use the Skin Cond Oil and Body lotion 4x a day this should help.
Arbonne is one of those 'home party' brands. There is no chemical, no fragrance... very pure. Be sure to ask for a discount.

You can use Cetaphil for gentle cleansing (can be used head to toe; I would skip any shampoo if you can). Vanicream works the best as a mosturizer. Put it on immediately after his bath and also first thing when he wakes up and right before bed. You can get Vanicream behind the counter at the pharmacy (non prescription), but you often have to call ahead to special order it. Neither is all-natural or organic, but are the most efficaceous options in my experience. Aveeno oatmeal bath can help with itching as can Sarna lotion (would double check with your pediatrician on the Sarna, though).

Hill Dermaceuticals Inc makes a product for eczema that contains a refined peanut oil. It does have a cortisteriod in it as the medication.
You can also try jojoba oil rubed on daily to break up the dry patches. This is not a condition but a disease where the body produces more skin cells then the body can slough away, so you should consult your doctor on treatments.

the best thing for eczema is get soem LANOLIN pure cream from your pharmacy. what it is is the oil from lambs/ sheep and it will cure the dryness of eczema. what eczema is , is very dry skin. using lanolin cures the dryness. many times it is due to lack of certan nutrients in the foods, and so one slowly heals, so having lanolin to cover the skin helps protect it until it can get enough nurtients to heal the skin. you have to make sure you get enough protein and certain vitamins to heal skin. if left uncovered eczema can get infected. so get lanolin . its about 1 to 3 dollars a tube of it from the pharmacy. it has to be 100 percent lanolin and then rub it on the spots where the eczema is. eczema is just very dry skin and it happens more in the winter time than any other time, and it will help. It is aso good for cradle cap on babies. Good luck.

There is this company called Melaleuca. It is one of those pyramid scheme things but a lot of people sell the stuff on ebay so you don't have to get into the whole selling part of it. They only sell all natural products that are totally safe for your family and the environment. I almost got into doing it but you have to spend $50/month in products yourself and try to get other people signed up and I wasn't sure if that was too much so I just buy their products online. Look for Melaleuca Renew lotion on ebay. If you google it you will find hundreds of testimonies on how it is the only thing that really works for eczema. Hope this helps!!

Hi L.,
Eczema is not something that will go away, it a matter of how to work with it from the inside out. Instead of trying to cover up the patches with creams and things, which does help for the moment, try looking into his diet. I have eczema and have tried everything! I went to alternative therapies because I wanted to address the source not just the symptoms. Include Omega 3's in his diet, organice oils, greens (if possible), and stay way from foods that commonly cause allergic reactions.
Good Luck

Having both my husband and three kids suffer from this affliction, I completely understand where you are coming from. A few suggestions: humidify humidify humidify, but I'm sure you know that. Wash as infrequently as possible - we bathe our kids about once / 5 days. Almond oil and shea butter or even olive oil, seem to work the best as emolients, and they're always on hand. if you have access to french products, dermofil indien, is a good stick product to use as well. good luck.
