Hi my son is 2 1/2 and has the peanut allergy. Does anyone know of an alternative to peanut butter that is not processed in a factory with peanut? Also I have trouble getting him to eat pretty much anything except for yogurt. I think it is b/c he only wants to drink all day. Please help. Thank you.

What can I do next?

Hi B.,

My almost four year old daughter has food allergies, including a peanut allergy. Believe it or not, Wal-Mart's brand Great Value has a soy butter that's peanut free. By law, I believe manufacturers must state what allergens are in a product plus whether the product is manufactured on machines that process other allergens. The only allergy warning on the label is "contains soybeans."

My daughter likes the soy butter a lot and I hope your son likes it as well. If that brand doesn't float his boat, try a natural food store, they carry a few different peanut butter alternatives.

If you're looking to meet other SAHMs, I agree w/ Kari S., the MOMS Club is a wonderful support group with playgroups, Mom's Night Out, family activities, seasonal parties, etc. I have been a member of the Clearwater chapter since my daughter was 4 months old and we have made life long friends. You can go to http://www.momsclub.org/ and find a chapter near you.

Best of luck,
J.

My son was the same way with the drinking all day and not wanting to eat, I cut back on his drinks and he eventually started eating more, I would also give him something easy to clean like cereal in a little cup instead of his drink and let him pick at it for an hour or so then offer a small amount of fluids

Hi-
Sorry I don't have any advice on the peanut allergy alternatives, but I saw that you are looking to meet other moms & children. I just joined the "MOMS CLUB", it's an international group with local chapters. I don't know what exact area you live in, but if you are in the New Port Richey, Port Richey, Hudson area you are welcome to join our group. We have regular activities that you can attend to check us out & decide if you'd like to join, which then costs only $20/yr. It's nice to know a few other moms & kids so you don't feel so alone while getting adjusted to your new environment.
If you're interested, you can email me back & I'll give you the contact info of our Membership VP.
Good luck with the peanut allergy issue.

I just read in my parents magazine/April issue about alternatives to peanut butter but you may have to do a little reasearch as to whether or not they are processed in factories with other peanut products. Sunflower butter,SoyNut butter, hemp-seed butter, and almond butter. Hope this helps! If you need more info. maybe you can go to parents.com and find out more details about these products. Good luck!

I have tried sunbutter...which is sunflower seed butter..it is made in a peanut free facility, I bought it at publix, right next to the peanut butter. The natural food store also has a selection of peanut free stuff...but the homemade kind is still made on the same grinder as peanut butter.

As far as getting him to eat other stuff...I am a speech pathologist and some of us specialize in feeding(not me..but I have friends who do)It could be just a picky eater, or he could have sensory issues...before you get really concerned...write down all he eats now and discuss it with your pediatrician....

We use Sunbutter. Its sunflower seed butter. It is processed in a completely nutfree facility. I buy it at Target (the creamy version) or Publix (the nutty and natural). It's quite a bit cheaper at Target though.

I know that you can grind your own almond butter at Fresh Market on US19. It is really good, my husband actually likes it better than the peanut butter. You can also check somewhere like Palm Harbor Natural Foods, sometimes they have alternatives. You just need to read the labels. Maybe he would be interested in smoothies or something like that, show him that you make it with yogurt but add some fruit and maybe a vitamin, at least it is better that just plain yogurt.
