My Son Has Really Bad Diaper Rash!

My 1 1/2 yr old son keeps getting a bad diaper rash every few dys. It seems as soon as one heals another appears. He gets pretty red all down there and has some diarrhea. He tends to be congested sometimes with a runny nose. Does this sound like an allergy? I started thinking I gave him some nuts yesterday and today. I give him those every once in awhile. Maybe he has a nut allergy?

What can I do next?

My DD will get rashes with apples. It could be food, or diapers, or soap....I'd try to narrow it down. See if it goes away without the nuts.

I also agree to take him in. My DD's last rash was tested to see if it was yeast or possibly even staph or strep (I forget which - she didn't have it).

Does he get diaper rash because he has frequent diarrhea? My advice would be to switch to brand name diapers if you not using them already (Pampers and Huggies only) because they add chemicals to the diaper filling that help neutralize the acid that burns the skin. Cheap brands do not have that.
For rash: wash with water and soap only, do not use wipes of any kind. Every time the child soils himself get him out of the diaper promptly, wash with running water and soap, rinse, pat dry with soft towel and apply A&D ointment mixed with a little bit of any zinc (white color) ointment. No powders at all. They dry the skin and make the rash worse.
For stuffy/runny nose: Put any saline drops in the nose and suction with LARGE bulb syringe (large because it gives less pressure and has a wider tip) as often as needed. Saline itself will help to dry the mucus and suctioning will help tremendously because small kids cannot clear their secretions on their own effectively.
For diarrhea: Limit sweats, juices and junk food. Give more grains, rice, veggies.
If all this fails after you've done it CONSISTENTLY - investigate other causes. Good luck.

Diarrhea poop is very acidy and burns their skin immediately on contact. Does it happen EVERY time he's had nuts? If not, it's probably just a little virus. They get those now and then, and that poop has a fragrance all it's own. If you can let him go diaperless for awhile and keep it Destin'ed it will heal up.

Take him to the Doctor.
It may be a 'yeast infection' rash.
These will NOT go away with diaper creams.
Take him to your Pediatrician.
Babies/kids of any gender, do get yeast infection rashes.

Or it could be because, he is sick and has diarrhea. And poop, is acidic and can irritate the bottoms.

Don't guess. You will never have an answer that way.
Just take him, to the, Doctor. So the Doctor can see it AND diagnose it.

I agree with S. H., it could be a yeast infection so he needs to be seen by his doctor. My little guy has had them a few times since he was born, she prescribes an antifungal cream, and it does the job.

It could be the diarrhea eating away at his tender skin, but go to the doctor so you'll know for sure. If it could be an allergy the doctor will know and can proceed to test your son.

Could be an allergy or a sensitivity, and the diarrhea is definitely causing the rash. I've only dealt with one rash, from a chronic condition, and the only thing that worked for it was something called "Triple Paste" that you can get OTC. It's expensive...ten dollars for a tube half the size of most diaper rash tubes...but it works much, MUCH better.

my son would do this sometimes...and i got a prescription...of nystain from ped...anytime a flare up would happen i would put this on my son...i also only used baby powder with cornstarch..good for prevention...but i highly recommend the nystain...or any good thick diaper creme...as soon as that diarhea hits bottom..mine son's would be immediately red and sometime blistered

I agree that since it is chronic, you need to take him to the doctor and let them diagnose (or not) the cause.

Regardless of the cause, however, the diarrhea IS caustic and will burn their tender skin. My SIL who is a nurse told me (when my 10 month old had roto- and was raw as could be and wouldn't even sit in a room temp. bath) that the best most effective thing to treat it is to:
1) use a soft cloth and plain water to clean him up at diaper changes = NO prepackaged wipes.
2) instead of applying ointments/cremes or powders, take a big fluffy cotton ball, soak it in Maalox, and apply it liberally to his bottom. Let it air dry (it is runny liquid so it takes a minute, but not too long).
3) repeat at each diaper change until healed.

It is the acid in the diarrhea that does the damage. And the maalox (or any other liquid antacid) will neutralize that acid upon contact, so that it can't burn the skin when he has the diarrhea. Once you try it, you will realize that it can be a little messy to apply (it is liquid after all) and he will think it is cold, so it isn't something you will want to continue once his bottom heals, but it really does work. Just buy a bottle solely for bottom treatment, lol. :)

Dairy, peanuts and eggs are usually the culprits for allergies in young children. You can have him patch tested at an allergist to narrow it down and skip the guesss work (too stressful). Good luck, I've been there.

My 2 year-old has had this exact problem since birth. Nystatin, steroid creams, and Triple Paste were simply a temporary surface fix. After visiting a holistic practitioner, she helped to treat this problem from the inside out. I cut most sugars, nuts, and wheat and applied a particular gel-based homeopathic remedy. Within 2-3 weeks, I saw a significant change in his once acidic urine and stool. The rash went away as well. It's amazing what certain foods can do to their little bodies. Good luck!! :)
