I have a 4 month old little boy-- He has had gurd since he was born, the doctors said that it would get better with age-- except I feel like he is getting worse. I put rice cereal in every bottle -- he seems to want to eat all the time-- I cant get him to sleep anywhere except a swing and that is only for moments at a time-- he is on prevecid for the acid reflux-- he just seems to get more miserable everyday--I have two other children--2 and 7 and it is very hard for me to be a constant with the baby and not pay any attention to the other two--not to mention I get very little sleep-- if anyone has any suggestions I would love to hear them--I feel like there is nothing left to do and I am just getting depressed and tired and I could just use some relief.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

It's me again-- I just wanted to say thank you so much-- I changed the cereal and I want you all to know that I have had 5 nights sleep ( knock on wood) in a row-- The oatmeal works wonders:) I am still taking him to the specialists on the 11th but for now thank you soooooo much -- my life is so much easier-- I was doing everything right except the cereal--I was using it just the wrong kind :P thank you again

My daughter emma has had gerd since she was two weeks old. She was born 6 weeks early and had a heart defect (VSD). We went to the doctor and once we ruled out a problem with the VSD she put the baby on Zantac syrup. Given 2-3 times a day. and we went on Enfamil AR formula! Huge help!!!
Here is what we have figured out.
The medicine:
#1 the medicine takes horrible (like listerine)
#2 She needed it 3 times a day, at first we gave it evry other feeding, but once she dipped to eating 5 times a day, that didnt' work out anymore so we started giving the medicine 9:00, 3:00, 9:00.
#3 DO NOT DEVIATE FROM THE SCHEDULE!!! reflux gets worse if given late. the acid builds up the tummy and is extremely uncomfortable. upright is best for at least twenty minutes. Emma slept in a swing for her first 2 months of life.
#4 try to have pharmacy flavor it with grape, its the only flavor that will sorta cover the nasty taste.
Formula:
#1 Mix with a egg beater because it is near impossible to shake out the clumps
#2 buy Dr Browns bottles and have the thicker formula nipples, it really makes a difference, its 2.38 at babys r us, worth a trip if you can make it.
#3 wait five minutes before giving the bottle, takes time for the thickening process to occur, gets even thicker in the belly too.
He sounds like he is going through a bit of a growth spurt. try other foods too aside from the formula!

I hope you find these tips helpful. We have found it has greatly improved my daughters comfort level, she is now 5 monthes old. Let me know
Good luck!

my son was three weeks early and was also had gerd. He would only sleep in his baby swing. So that's where we let him sleep, I figured if he would sleep in it than that worked for me. I will say that the rice cereal made it worse...if I was you I would switch to the oatmeal baby cereal. Also what worked better for me, was the jars of mixed cereal that had like applesauce or another light fruit in it. He tolerated this way better than the powder cereal that you mix with the formula. I'm not sure if you are breast feeding or formula feeding..but I know we had to try a bunch of different kinds of formula and often had to switch every couple of months. Hope one of these helps...good luck. If you would like to talk more feel free to email me at ____@____.com

This can be very scary to deal with. I went through this for a while with my first when she was a month old. I ended up feeding her for ten to fifteen minutes every hour and a half, luckily she grew out of it after about a month.....but it was a long month , lol.
Feed him small frequent meals in an upright position and then keep him upright for at least half an hour after he eats. We put a couple of 2x4 pieces under then legs at the head of her crib to prop her up some at night. Mylicon drops with every meal realy helped, and lots of tummy time to work out any gas burping didn't get.
I found this link with some good info http://infantrefluxdisease.com/infant-reflux-main.php

4 months is a long time and it's effecting the whole family now, I would call the Doctor. If they can't give you some options then call a different one, until you find someone that can help. One thing I've learned over the years is no matter how much you like your Doctor, sometimes you need to push and take matters into your own hands. Any truely good Doc. will back you up.
Good luck...let us know what happens.

My daughter had that too and I think you might just have to wait it out unfortunately! My DD was a preemie and it took her until almost a year for it to go away! It did get better once she started eating solids. Good luck!

I hope everything goes ok on the 11th with your little one. Selena (my 6 month old) was diagnosed with acid reflux when she was 2 weeks old. For months we gave her zantac 2x a day, and elevated her crib. For the first few weeks, she slept in her bouncy seat, or swing. Shortly after I went back to work, she started having formula more and more often, (she was breastfed when I was home). By Memorial Day, she was projectile vomiting all over the place. I took her to the doctor and they switched her to soy. Same thing. Then they switched her to Similac Alimentum. It's a hypoallergenic formula and about $25 a can (vs $13 for the regular formula). She still was getting sick, so we took her to the Hospital for a upper GI screening. They took X-rays while she drank this thick fruit flavored stuff, that apparently shows up on the X-rays. <---This is probably what they are going to do your little one, on the 11th. The doctors at the hospital told me she was fine and didn't even show acid reflux! It still perplexes me! I don't understand that at all, but she's been on Alimentum for just over a month now, and every bottle has to have cereal in it. She holds down both the rice and oatmeal so far, and besides occasional spit up, she is fine. She's been really good with the baby food so far also. I started her early because for the whole last week of May, she wasn't holding anything down. So far she's had all the "flavors" of stage 1 and she's been OK. It's so strange how many moms I hear of now with similar problems. I wish you all the best!
