My Son Has Become Constantly Sick

My son has, until recently, always been a healthy child. He is now nine and until March. hadn't missed a day of school. Then he got a sore throat and stayed home for three days. On the fourth day he sounded better and he had never missed more then two days of school before so he went in to school. He began to feel bad at school and went to the nurses office but because didn't have a fever and other children were throwing-up he was sent back to his class. When he got home he sounded real bad and I made an oppointment for the next day at his primary. When we get there, they say he has an abscess tonsil and he needed to go to Children's Mercy. There he had a CAT scan, surgery (but kept the tonsils)a few more days off school. Apparently, this is very rare to happen once, even more so to happen twice. Which is why they didn't recomment removal. About two weeks later, he was home for a full week for flu symptoms. We all were sick for a day but with him, he had the runs and stomach pain for two days before us and missed four days of school. He wasn't shaking it so we visited the primary but there wasn't much they could do. About two weeks after that, he's sick again, throwing up. He missed a whole week of school, I kept him down all weekend. He went back to school on Monday and he is sick again. He said this throat hurt Wed night and I didn't think he was really sick. This morning he had a headache and when he came home from school he had that nasally, swollen gland sound he had when he had the tonsile thing. He was back at school for three days! I called the counsler when he was sick last time, just to keep the communication goint. She said his attendence is at 75% about. Normal is 98% and they like to keep it above 95%. I have also talked to the nurse after the last week home and she said that she thought it might be due to having surgery which causes a lower ammunity which brought on the other sicknesses. It made sense but not with him turning around and being sick again. He has an appointment with a doctor in the office, but not his primary ped tomorrow. I plan to have them look at his tonsil, and I also want his white blood cells checked. Does anyone else have any suggestions as to ask the doctor?

What can I do next?

It is very difficult to get back to normal one when thing happens after the other. This happened to me recently. I'm very healthy and never get sick. But I did get some of the nasty stuff going around and it just lead into a long, back to back illness with lots of different things going on. Well I came here asking about it and shortly after others did too. Since I have run into SEVERAL others that have reported the same EXACT symptoms appearing in the same order. Your son sounds like he has had very similar symptoms with the exception of his tonsils getting as bad as they did. But, my oldest daughter became ill around the same time I did. She had all the same symptoms with the exception of the same thing your son has gone through. Her tonsils were in bad shape and they threatened taking them. The didn't want to because of her age. She's better now. I am completely normal. One lady I met said they are about to send her to neurologist because they had run out of ideas. But it also sounds like she is at the tail end of it and coming out of it.

I think the crud people are passing around is some viruses that have mutated and are just hitting various people in various ways. It was a BAD season for sickness.

Sounds like he should get a full blood work-up and be tested for every infection and virus under the sun. Make sure the doctor knows how serious this is and how long he has been suffering. In my experience, you have to be bleeding out your eyeballs before a doctor will even listen to you. Insist on some treatment. Insist on some resolution to this. Good luck. It sounds just awful.

Have you seen an ENT? Does he need to have his tonsils removed? Has his pediatrician done blood tests? I have learned that you really have to advocate for your children when you feel instinctively that something is not right. I have often had the doctors tell me everything was fine, but my intuition told me it wasn't...every time, I was correct. Keep advocating for them to continue looking until they find something to make him healthy!!

I missed 3 months of school in the 1st grade, I had allergies, but my mom didn't know that right off the bat. Maybe you should inquire about that while your at the dr.

When I was about his age, I was sick for 2 years(and had to be tutored because I missed so much school)with Tonsillitis before they finally removed them, and then I was fine! I ran high fevers, sore throats, ear aches, and vomiting. I know Strep and MONO can exhibit similar symptoms. Be sure to push them to test for all the possibilites! I hate to push removing tonsils, but I am a fan of getting them out if the illness is chronic! Good luck!
