So What Happened?

I want to thank all of you for your ideas/suggestions.I got online and read about ADHD and he has all the symptoms..The impulsivity etc...The meds he is on now seem to be working and his apetite is sooooooooo much better. He eats constantly,or so it seems ,maybe because he wasnt eating hardly before on the other meds.Either way I am glad(for now) he is eating well and meds are working. But it seems like the meds do good for awhile until his body adjusts and then thats when he starts doing not so good. It is hard for me to get him involved in sports etc..since I work long hours and nothing is offered in our town.I live in Marietta if anyone knows where that is,and if you do then you know about bot having anything to do for the kids here.I work 12 hour days m-thur.I do try to do things with him but nothing hold his interest long enough.I let him get on the computer and have bought him interactive things to do on here but he is still not able to sit still. It is like he has ants in his pants.O.K. I'm rambling now..lol. Again thank you all...K.

I have a son that just turned 16 on friday. We found out that he had ADHD when he was in kindergarten. He has since outgrown it. So there is hope. I found that cutting down on the gluten that he ate helped with his ADHD alot. I live in far north Texas in Denison. So it sounds like we are almost neighbors. If you would like to talk mail me at ____@____.com

Hi K.,
I don't want to alarm you but I personally know 4 children aged 6 to 12 (my son, age 10 included) that were previously diagnosed with ADHD. Further investigation has changed this to mild- moderate autism. Application of ABA principles have made a tremendous difference and 3 of 4 have come off meds successfully. I would suggest finding a psychologist that does neuropsychological evaluations for a complete diagnosis.

Good luck,
C.

medication for ADHD is quite controversial right now. kids all over the country are being diagnosed with this disorder, however, since there is no real way of actually knowing that your son has real ADHD other than the therapists opinion, there have been many concerns about over diagnosis. you might want to research this subject online further, there have been no studies that have proven any types of food to have any effect on this disorder. a lot of kids do well with medicine PLUS therapy, because ADHD does not get better just with medication. you really need to abserve your son and figure out what he personally needs (quiet time, more interaction, etc.) but that's a tough situation and i wish you the best of luck.

Listen to your doctor and try to establish consistent routines. Dealing with disabiliities can take a lot of time, money, and emotional upset for your son and his family. Do not spend those things on unproven therapies. Look at the following websites

Why some unproven therapies become popular

Be skeptical of “cures”

If you are concerned about his diagnosis find a psychiatrist or pediatirc neurologist who specializes ADHD.

Hi K.,

I know just what you are going through. My son just turned 8 and we were told that he had ADHD 3 yrs ago. I didnt want to be one of those moms that just put her kid on meds, so I went to 3 different Dr. Of course they all said the samething. He has been on Concerta from the begining and we have had nothing but good results. I also cut down his sugar intake and he eats a healthy, hardy breakfast and we have sit down dinners at the table. The routin stuff helps alot, so he plays soccer and baseball, he is doing really well and has begun to learn the behaviors that dont get him into trouble, if you know what I mean. The other thing that we were told is to only allow him 1 hour a day on any type of vidio game. The Dr. said that those are like an additive drug to kids with ADHA. Hope that I have helped and not bored you, good luck.

My son has ADHD and he is 14 years old. I controlled my son's sugar in take and that helped. I am not sure what meds your son is taking but the one that helped my son alot was the Concerta. My son is no longer on any medication because the older he got the medication would not work as well. If you want to talk more email me at ____@____.com

I have 4 children with ADHD...they are ages 5,13,15 and 17.All of them have been on various medications and when you get the right medication it does really help.Another thing that really helps alot is routine,structure...having everything planned and scheduled helps a lot with kids with ADHD.I'd be glad to help you in any way.I also live in southern Oklahoma. We might live close to eachother.I'd love to have some friends here in Oklahoma. All of my close friends live in Texas where I lived until 1995.I have lots of family here and we are all very close but it would be nice to have friends here as well. You can email me at ____@____.com a nice day!!!

I have to agree with Carol on this one. Monitor for yourself how your son responds to different things--keeping a diary and then consider the possiblity of aspergers. I have dealt with kids with both and it is easy for some to be misdiagnosed because their of behavior.

Think about it --both problems are from behavior that does not fit into our 'standard' of the norm. But both behaviors can be similar.

My ADHD kid was on Concerta. I found sugar made a huge difference. Activity- dance, gym, soccer made a huge difference. They were not in trouble at school nearly as much with those activities going. Also a very strict routine for meals and sleep helped a ton.

Good luck,
ts

My son has it as well, but he sees his psychiatrist once a week for counseling and at really bad times I give him a few sips of black coffee. The counseling works wonderfully. He is concentrating better, doing his schoolwork, tries to control himself, and he really looks forward to his sessions with his doctor. His doctor "rewards" him in little ways when he has a good week (such as playing a board game during his session) and I do the same at home. So he hasn't needed meds quite yet.
