It has been a week and my son still wont eat solid food, he seems to be really scared of it hurting.. does any one know what type of games or tricks i can use to get my son to eat a bit..So far he olny likes a lil peanutbutter on his bread but thats it he wont even eat the noodles out of his soup and he says mashed potatos hurt. I have him drinking those carnation breakfast drinks so he can get some vitamins, but that cant be good for a long period of time, can it? What do i do?

Love
nearvous mommy.

What can I do next?

Hello Nervous Mommy, I would call the Doctor for advice, but in the mean time as long as he isn't losing weight and has energy he will be ok with "liquids". Just think of things that would taste good to you but don't try to trick him - they are always smarter than we think.

Give him time. I had mine out at 5 years old and I wouldn't eat solids for 3 weeks. My mom microwaved eggs to soften them and I ate macaroni and cheese lukewarm and had popsicles and just alot of soft stuff. He will regain his hunger for food when he is ready. I know I am not much help but that is a major life change for a child. Especially when it is truely scratchy and it hurts. I really don't have any games for you. Just give him time. That is all I can give you. I hope he feels better.

How old is he? My daughter (now 16) had hers out at age 2 - she seemed to bounce back pretty quick - she ate her favorite foods - like ice cream - something hot may not be it - freeze pops - also check w/the doctor to see why - maybe it is still inflamed? The inflamation may be suthed by coldness instead of warmth.

My 5 yr old had hers out in May. The dr told me to give her whatever she would eat the 1st week or 2. So literally she ate, fruit rollups(something I dont normally give her) and anything else she wanted. I think it took her at least 3 weeks to feel comfortable eating her normal foods...but it does happen. Like someone else said, make sure he's getting fluids. The scab is off by now so it should be healed. You should have a post-surgery check up this week or next so ask them then or call them now, thats what they have nurses for.

For nutrition, try giving your son Pediasure or an equivilant.
You can keep him on Pediasure for a while as a meal supplement, just check with his pediatrician if this goes on much longer. Every time he eats something, ask him if it hurt. He might notice it didnt hurt that time and might try something else.
Can you numb his throat with chloraseptic? Would that help?

hope he feels better soon!

Well my daughter was three when shhe had the same surgery and we had the same problem. She was stuck in the hospital for 4 days because of it. Finally i told her i was going home and her father came up. I didn't even get home and he called saying she ate a whole bunch of stuff and the were going to let her go. I guess it kinda scared her that i was going home and she wasnt. When we got home she started the whole thing over again. One night i was so aggravated i told her i was going to smokey bones for dinner and she had to stay home with a sitter. This is her favorite place to go. Needless to say she started to eat after that. It is tough but he will start to eat sonner or later, he will get sick of the same thing over and over again. Try what i did it might work.

Hi my name is V. I have 5 children and there has been a few diffrent types of surgerys in are lives the one thing I can tell you from exsperience is don't push it your child will eat when he is ready just keep on giving him the health things and continue to offer the solids sooner or later he will give them a try. He will get sick of the liquids sooner or later. The othere advice I can suggest is don't make a big deal out of it kids tend to like all that kind of attetion.

I worked for a Ear, Nose, and Throat specialists office for 3 years! You child is very much in the norm and will be back to himself very shortly. The pain actually lasts about 2 weeks....most often the second week is more painful because of the scabbing falling off! Continue with the soft foods and if he won't eat...don't worry about it. He will when he's hungry enough. But the most important thing to remember is HE MUST DRINK! The more dehydrated he gets, the more pain he'll have! So keep him flushed with water, juices, pops, milkshakes, what ever fluids you can get down him! That will help tremendously. Don't worry about the breakfast drinks. If he's drinking them, let him. It's not that he isn't hungry, it's because he's scared of it hurting when he does. Give him another week before you start making him eat more solids. Don't be nervous! Good luck!

Hi L., Well I dont have any experience as it pertains to my children, but I had my tonsils out 12 yrs ago when I was 25. it was very painful and I too had a difficult time to eat. I was told by my nurse that it was important obviously to eat and be hydrated. She gave me a few ideas. While I was home watching TV, I would take a sip of liquid during each commercial. I also was able to eat soup, the cream of chicken, cream of celery, etc,.. I also liked mashed potatoes with gravy. Specifically, KFC. i didnt eat much and I did lose quite a bit of weight, but it can really hurt to swallow. he will eat more soon enough. Call the doctor as well if you are really nervous. Good luck and I hope he feels better soon!

L.,
It takes quite a while for thier throat to start feeling better. It took my son a good two weeks before he was truely eating solid foods. He will in time start to eat again. Don't worry too much just yet it has only been a week.
