My Son Fell Out of the Cart!!!

today my 2 1/2 year old son and i were in target. he was sitting in the seat of the cart, and asking for something off the shelf. i told him no and continued down the aisle. i was walking along the side of the carriage when dorian, my son, got out of the seat and jumped. he hit his head on the floor VERY hard. it immediatly turned blue and puffed up.
i called the dr and she told me to check a few things, like the pupils, and make sure he didnt get a brain injury. he didnt have any vomiting, no sleepyness, no symptoms of brain injury.
he has a wicked egg on his head. the bump is soft, which i found weird. ive never seen a lump that was soft like this. it makes me so nervous. i know i checked him for all the symptoms of head injury, and he had none, but i still cant help the anxiety. im just worried about the bump. its not overly huge, just that its "squishy". im sorry ladies, i just needed to vent and see if a "squishy" lump was normal. i know id get love and support here, without being judged!

So What Happened?

we ended up going to the emergency room, and they took xrays to look for a skull fracture. they werent worried about brain injury, thank god, just a skull fracture. it turns out he has calcifications. they are caused when theres severe trauma to the bone. the good news is my little monkey will be good as new soon. THANK YOU to everyone for all the love and support!!!

I don't think there is a mother out there who wouldn't be worried! I am an emergency nurse with pediatric experience. An egg is a good thing! We like to see the swelling - less pressure building up on the inside. Unless he is showing signs of behavioral changes, sleepiness, vomiting, crying, or anything abnormal, then I am sure he is fine. If you notice any changes in his patterns, schedule an immediate appt with your pediatrician. If he starts vomiting, seizing, etc, go to the ER. I am sure everything is fine. Just relax, give him some Tylenol in case his head hurts, and the boo-boos will go away. YOu may have nightmares for awhile, but I am sure he is fine!

C., When my daughter was 18 months old she leapt from my mother arms towards me and ended up going right over my shoulder and belly flopping in the middle of Applebees!! I understand the anxiety and perhaps a bit of guilt. As long as you keep an eye out for the signs that the doctor said, I wouldn't worry about it. If you are concerned, ask for him to be seen!! That never hurts! One thing is for sure, I bet he won't be doing that again any time soon!!

Hi C.,
Oooph - that must have scared you half to death! My recommendation - to put your mind at ease, is to call your local hospital and ask to speak with the triage nurse. Explain the situation and ask her if she thinks that your son should be seen at the ER. If she says yes, then I would call your pediatrician back and tell them that you are still concerned about the bump and that you would like to set up an appt with them (to avoid ER costs) or simply go to the ER itself. Good luck!

You can take him to the emergency room.
I don't want to scare you but head injuries
can be extremely dangerous. I've heard that
it is a good sign when the bump eggs up.
Also, if he naps then wake him up every
20 minutes or so. But I would definately
take him to the emergency room if I was
worried.

Hi C.,
I would also take him to be checked out. If your nervous about it you will probably feel like that until you know for sure. I know I would.
Good Luck. I hope your little guys is better soon!

Ann-Marie has an excellent answer! I felt like I needed to read this, in case. I was born clumsy; my nickname in the Dove Singers (a Christian Performance group I belong to - we're performing this coming weekend) is "The Fabulous Falling F."! My mother has told me about times I'd fallen as a baby. I'm hoping it's not genetic! Anyway, get that bump checked, and keep us up-to-date.

Your doctor told you all that needs to be watched and that is all you can do. I would put a cold pack on it, if he will let you. My 2 1/2yr old grand baby would never let me do it, but you could try. Squishy is fine...you will be amazed how much it will be down tomorrow.
Accidents happen so quickly and we always feel terrible about what our children are doing. Don't be too hard on yourself.

C., accidents happen, don't beat yourself up over this. Kids fall sometimes, you must have been horrified though, it's scary! If his pupils are fine, you can see the swelling and he doesn't have any vomitting he should be fine. But you could go to your pediatrician/nurse practioner or the ER if it would give you peace of mind. Big hugs for both of you! Hang in there!

Hi C.,
My best frien and I were ice skating when we were young. Well she thought she was Dorathy Hamill...LOL and did one of those spinny things and fell face first onto the ice. Imediatly she grew a HUGE 1/2 egg shaped bump on her head. We went to the emergency room. Everything was good and we are now healthy adults in our 30's with our own children to cause us anxiety.
