Hi moms,
Any of you have any ideas about how to make a 1-year-old boy want to eat.My son started loose his appetite when he was 8-9 months. Now,it becomes worse.Since he won't swallow,he likes to keep food in his mouth until the food turns thin..He had blood test, there nothing wrong physically. Now,I am looking for a good behaviral therapist.I will make idea clearer,he likes crawling around the house to explore things while he's eating, when he catches something that he's interested,he'll swallow food and willing to open his mouth to take another bite.please give me some advice,I am depressed now.I want to give up.thanks ladies for reading

So What Happened?

Thanks moms for your very helpful advice.I had him seen by a Chinese doctor,he said my son has G&I problem. It means his stomach does not mature(my guess),and it does not work well. That makes my little one doesn't want to eat.Even I try my best to feed him 3 meals a day,he does not gain an ounce.I nurse him before naps and bedtime at night.I try to feed him milk(pediasure, formular) by spoon, since he is not willing to drink out off a bottle nor a cup.I blend solid food become puree

Will he drink milk? My friends daughter had a texture/sensory issue w/ food, and is fine now. Just had some therapy... might not be that at all. What did the ped say? Also, can you make it fun for him,,, dips etc?

My son is 15 months and eats well now. From 10 months until now, I had to feed him while he was exploring. That was the only way he'd eat. He was just too curious and busy to sit still and eat. However, he would chew and swallow. The other mama made a good suggestion, that he might have a sensory issue. You might want to talk with his Dr. about it.

My guess is that it's the texture of solid foods. Remember, in many cultures and even a hundred years ago in our culture, children were fed only breast milk well past their first birthday. The fact that he's letting the food disolve before swallowing tells me he's just not developmently at the point where solid foods are the right thing for him. Does he have molars yet? Remember withou molars, it's difficult to chew. Will he take baby food ok? If the answer is yes, that this is what you should be feeding him. Slowly introduce solids to him by starting with soft foods like cheese bits, frozen & then thawed fruits, etc. He will start chomping when he's good & ready to!

Hi Q.,

It could be a sensory issue but not always. Did your doctor also recommend seeing a pediatric G&I doctor or seeing a feeding team to determine or rather rule out other issues (like sensory, food aversion, etc.). Seek answers elsewhere like your feeding team at your local children's hospital or through a pediatric G&I doctor if there isn't one in your area seek a children's speech pathologist since this type of issue falls within their realm of expertise.. At least get a consult. It is curious that he does not like to swallow. One book that was very helpful to me was called "Food Chaining" written by occupational therapists. There is a lot of information in that book to at least figure out what you are dealing with and recommendations on how to solve them. Best of luck to you and your little boy.
