Has anyone ever dealt with a "slum landlord"? My situation is this, I live in a mobile home park and it in the last year the lot rent was raised due to the parks expenses going up (economy). Anyways the streets in here are just filled with pot holes that in some spots you can not even avoid them. A few of them that were at the entrance of the park were filled like three months ago, but still then nothing has been done since then and some of them if you hit them sounds like it is gonna do some damage to the care, and not to mention we have many children that live in here and ride bikes, and play street hockey etc. On top of this the guy that is suppose to be cleaning up the park and do repairs etc lives next to the office and has his stuff shut off and is has cord plugged into the office to get electricity to his house, so basically we are paying for his stuff. The past year all that has moved in here are parting individuals that has no respect for their neighbors. People would label these individuals as trash. One of the individuals has 29 write ups in under a year of being here and that is it no eviction or nothing, and I find out by my friend in here that this individuals house was raided for drugs last week. Nothing is even being done about anything, and we have had so many managers and none want to do their job. I know a simple solution is to move in which I am, but what about the people that cannot afford to move at this point and have to deal with this stuff. I know a few really good people in my park and they do not have the means to move. Any ideas would be great, cause my friends need to know what she can do legally.

What can I do next?

I would approach the city government about it to see who's responsible. If rent has gone up in order to fix things up I would think you should see evidence of it.

I'd get some free legal advice about the mismanagement of the park and what others' options are.

M.,

Here is a link to the Michigan Consumer Protection Agency with the Attorney General's Office. This link takes you to a pdf file that details the rights and responsibilities of landlords and tenants. There is also a phone number you can call to learn more about mobile home park tenants and landlords.

Good luck!

I'd call Channel 7 to do a story on it... you may catch they eye of a non profit group that would at least clean up the park for the kids! With the economy like this, they would probably be interested!

Calling one of the troubleshooters is a good idea, but on top of that, I would call the service provider (DTE or Consumers) and turn that guy in for stealing electricity. Why should the people who honestly pay to live there pay his way when he's stealing from you all?
Also, get in touch with the Michigan Mobile Home Commision, and make a formal complaint, and have all your friends make them too. The more they get, the faster they (hopefully) will act to correct the situation.
this link has the phone numbers you need

and this link is the act that details all your rights and also tells you how to file formal complaints. Road maintanence is specifically in here.
