My Mouth Hurts

I really have no idea what it is. It started about a week and a half ago that the back of my mouth-the soft pallet became sore. Since then it has spread to under my tongue, along part of my gumline and one side of my tongue. I have also noticed there is somewhat of a metallic taste in my mouth. With the exception of the side of my tongue it doesn't bother me until I eat. When I do eat it feels like my whole moth is on fire. I have been eating icecream after dinner almost everynight to soothe it. I thought having a smoothie for a meal would be a good idea a couple of days ago, but sucking on the straw made my mouth too.

It looks like my soft pallet is slightly discolored- kind of pale and orangish. I thought possibly of thrush, but I haven't been on any antibiotics or any other meds for that matter.

Do I go to the doctor or the dentist? I last went to the dentist in December, and I opted not to carry dental insurance this year since all of my insurance premiums went up. So I would really rather go see my doc if that would be appropriate. Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

So, I went in to the doctor. She also had no idea what it was. She told me to take antacids and basically treat for acid reflux for 2 weeks. She told me to come back in 2 weeks if there is no improvement. Honestly, I don't believe it has anything to do with acid reflux since I haven't been experiencing any heartburn or even a sore throat.

At least I know it is nothing too serious.

A dentist is a doctor who specializes in the mouth - not just teeth. If you go to your doctor first it is possible he will just send you to the dentist (unless it is something common) . If you have a really low co-pay, go doctor first, otherwise just start at the dentist.

go see an ear nose and throat doctor ASAP, sounds like an infection of some sort. Dentists deal with teeth and gums.
Are you better? If not I would continue to find answers. You never know if it is serious or not, not all doctors have the right answers. I hope you are feeling better!!

Sounds exactly like something I went through last week and I had been to the dentist the previous Saturday! So I don't think it was dental. I could barely eat. Anyway, check with doctor ( I just waited it out - probably not a good idea). There are so many viruses going around. I thought it was thrush also, but who knows. It is gone happy to say.

Try the doctor first. In the meantime, try eating yogurt which will might calm thrush or sores. Also, the supplement L-Lysine can't hurt you and can calm things like that too - depending on whether it is a minor infection or not. Mouth rinses with warm water and salt help heal inflammation in some cases but test to make sure the salt doesn't burn first.

Do not put off seeing the doctor... Ask for an urgent appt. Even if it is minor, it could spread down the throat and you might not be able to eat or swallow without a whole lot of pain.

You need to go see the doctor right away!! Don't wait it out. Let him send you to the dentist if needed, but sounds like you may have an infection or something worse. Best wishes and God bless!

It could be a tooth paste sensitivity. have you used different oral products. Thrush, only if you are immunosuppressed, it is unlikely. HSV (oral herpes) maybe. Take probiotics and check with a nurse practitioner dentist or doctor. k
