Hi,
My mom seems to have developed cellulitis on the bridge of her nose. It is red and slightly swollen. I am freaking out because she is around our newborn all of the time. She is the best grandma! However, I am really concerned. Can this be transmitted to the baby??

Thank you!

So What Happened?

Hi,
Of course I always consult my pediatrician on all medical matters. Probably too many. Yet, what I love about this board is finding people that have been through similar experiences and what their outcomes were. I think that is probably what most of us are on here for...a little support. I always appreciate all of the responses as well. There is nothing like finding someone who has gone through what you have gone through...regardless of of how big or small.

I've had it twice from mosquito bites, and although it's very painful, it's not contagious. I wouldn't worry

http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/cellulitis/AN00745 The mayo clinic says it is not directly contagious, only if the person has open sores. My husband had cellulitis in his arm about 15 years ago and he needed 5 days of IV antibiotics. They left one of those plastic things in his arm that they hook an IV bag up to and every day he went to the hospital and sat for about an hour while he got the medicine. I assume your mom is on antibiotics at this point? I am not sure, but generally after 24 hours on antibiotics kids can go back to school and contagiousness is very unlikely. I would call the pediatrician and ask for recommendations. Perhaps mom can simply wear one of those face-masks that were everywhere last year when swine-flu was spreading. CVS sells them in boxes of about 10. Good luck.

It's like a staph infection and bacterial, not viral. Is she on any antibiotics?

Very unlikely to be transmitted to the baby. Your Mom and the baby would both have to have open wounds for the infections to be transmitted. Don't be concerned, just enjoy the holidays with your family!!

It would be rare if she did pass it to the baby. If it was an open wound and the baby has an opening in his/her skin then it would be possible. It can be staph or strep infection in the deep layers of the skin. My youngest had it from a tick bite no one else in the house got it.

If you are really concerned, then you ought to place a call to your doctor. The internet is a great place for support and advice on parenting issues, but medical issues should always be addressed with a doctor, not an internet moms board.
I hope your mother gets well soon and your baby is perfectly fine

Dear Robin, I am not a doctor but I do not think this can be transmitted. I believe it is an infection under the skin. Check it out with a professional. Grandma Mary
