Have you tried giving him a target? Cheerios are great...
I lost my cool today when, once again, my 4 1/2 year old little boy peed in the bathroom trash can - and missed a good bit. This is not the first time. Argh. However, when I asked him why he does this, I got an answer for the first time. He doesn't want to sit on the toilet to go potty. We have asked him to do this because he doesn't pay attention to the job at hand and ends up missing the bowl completely. So, I am at a loss and looking for suggestions. We are going to make an appointment with our pedicatrician, but I thought I would see what the moms have to say.
I had heard about Cheerios as targets, but was somewhat grossed out by the thought as that is what the kids eat for breakfast. I didn't want any strange associations! But, after all your advice, I decided to try an alternative: wheat puffs. My son thinks that is the funniest thing ever. So far we haven't had any more problems. Thanks a ton!

Oh the joys of motherhood! LOL
Some people might think this gross, but we keep the toilets very clean. My son stands so he is right up against the toilet... it only needs to be pointed a little out to clear the rim. When we are somewhere else or at a public toilet, I lay toilet paper over the rim wherever he will touch. Hope that helps.
Put a cheerio in the toilet or a couple and tell him to try and hit them. I have heard about this, but never tried it. Anything really will do, even a square of toilet paper. Eventually he will catch on! Hope this helps

Put cheerios in the toilet and tell him to see if he can sink them. It becomes a game and they learn to aim. I have 3 boys and this has worked with all of them. I just keep a canister of cheerios in the bathroom for sinking purposes only. Eventually they get tired of the game, but they have learned to aim.
For my older boys (6 and 8), if they make a mess and don't clean it up I give them the gloves and the cleaning stuff and make them clean it up. If they don't want the chore then they need to pay attention to their aim.
Hope this helps. Good Luck.
I had the same problem with my little boy. We put different things in the toilet and had him try to hit them. We uses cheerios, little pieces of toilet paper and even bugs that we caught and put in the toilet. He really got excited about the bugs. Yuck, i know. but this seemed to help. The obgects gave him something to aim for and he got excited when he actually hit it. Hope this helps.
I found this problem with my son. Was not that he doesn’t pay attention. its that he has waited so long to go, it come out faster 1) then he can get his pants down ,so it miss a lot 2) even if he dose make it
the force is so great it spray all over. We found that he can and will hold it all day. Therefore, we remind him to go often. This has helped this problem.
