My husband and I have finally (I think) agreed on a name for our daughter (I am due in 2 1/2 weeks). We have decided on the first name Peyton/Paityn...the problem is, we disagree on how we are going to spell it. I won't tell which one of us likes which spelling, but the two different spellings are above: "Peyton" and "Paityn". My husband suggested that we ask all of you Moms out there to decide for us, and I agreed. So, what do you think and why? Thanks!!
All: thank you so much for the many responses! When we cut the survey off, my husband had won with...Peyton. Peyton KayAnn was born on June 27th and is doing great! Thank you all once again.

I guess I would go with Peyton. I named my daughter Madalyn and no one ever spells it right. They spell it Madelyn, Madeline, ect. But never the right way. She will have to go through that her whole life. Good luck, and congrats on the baby girl.

I have had a name with an uncommon spelling for 60 years and I would vote for the most common spelling - Peyton. Personalized items were impossible to find and no one ever spelled it right unless I spelled it for them.

I would say Peyton. Some of these new spellings are just confusing kids, friends, teachers, etc. To me using odd spellings for names is setting them up to have people spell their name wrong their whole life.. Like say if someone buys them something personalized, etc. I have an Emily and I spelled it the good ole traditional way. She is in day care and has another Emily in there and they spell it Emmilee - No one will ever spell her name right with seeing that first (lol).. Good luck on whichever you choose.. My husband has a daughter named Peyton from a previous marriage.

Peyton" and "Paityn". I like Paityn, but when I think of the name I see "Payton. I can see Peyton being said wrong. Belief me I know my name is spelled L. but people for some reason always want to call me Loraine. it has a totally different sound but they do it all the time. I am always correcting people. It can be annoying at times.

**EDIT** Hey T....we are dying to know what you picked!! :)
When we chose names for our kids, we took into consideration that we didn't want to have to spell it to somebody every time we said it (think Dr. appts, etc.), so we went with traditional spellings.
Good luck! Keep us posted on what you decide!

My step-daughter spells her name "Brandie" and hates that she can never find anything with her name spelled correctly on it (it's always Brandy or Brandi). And she hates it even more when people misspell it. (She's 13.) I also agree that "Peyton" is the masculine form and I would go with "Payton". Good luck!

I like the spelling of "Peyton" because it's the way all of her teachers/friends/etc. will spell it. I believe that children already have enough things to learn and deal with so why make it any harder for them?

First, I think either one is beautiful... But I like Peyton best. It's an unusual name, but I think most have seen it as Peyton, and that way there would be no issue with pronunciation... I have an unusual name myself, and the worst thing in my childhood life was the constant mis-pronunciation...

I have a new nephew who was born in March and he spells his name "PEYTON" so that is how a boy would spell it I think. The famous NFL quarter back spells it like that too. I particulary don't care for the other way, how about something different that way you don't have to choose. I would spell it "PAYTON" if it was a girl. Just a suggestion. Good Luck!

Hi T.
My vote is for Paityn, it seems more feminine. As far as having to spell her name all the time, she will get used to it and it really is no big deal. My name is P. and people always assume it is spelled with a "y" or "ie". I got used to it and just correct it when need be or spell it from the outset and that way I don't have to correct anyone! As far as pronouncing "tyn" as "tine", that never crossed my mind.
We named our sons Brady and Carson....easy right? Nope, we have had a couple people pronounce Brady, "Brad-ie" and our 3 week old, Carson has been hospitalized recently and I can't tell you how many times I have had to correct people that Carson is his first name, not his last. People will always manage to screw it up no matter how easy! Good luck.
(Fun question!!!)

Hi... one thing I would recommend is going to www.babyzone.com and taking part in your own "baby name poll" where you can put all the names you are considering and people will vote. You can check back at any time to see which ones people like better. My husband and I did this with our second son (who's now almost 8 months old) and it was really helpful! As far as my opinion? I think that I like Paityn - it looks pretty. Also, what about Payton? Hope this helps!

Peyton...It is hard anymore with people making up names and changing the spelling of them for teachers, fellow students or just about anyone to pronounce your childs name right. Peyton is not spelled Paityn and it will throw some people off. You will never find anything personalized either and it will all have to be special ordered if you ever want anything with her name on it. It is nice to be unique but in the long run you have to think what will be easier on your child through their lifetime. My sister in law is almost 40 and people still can't pronounce her name right and when they call her house and ask for her by something else she says they are not there because no one by that name is there. Good luck with your new little bundle of joy.

I also like Peyton. I agree with the other mom's response... If your going for unique spell it the other way, but remember, it may be unique to you but a pain for her when she gets older. It's like spelling J. with one N or Kelly with an ey, unique but mostly spelled wrong.
Congratulations, I also have a son 4 and a daughter who just turned 1 and they are so much fun :)

Peyton definitely. Or Payton is even better, but I've never seen it spelled Paityn and I don't really like it. For one thing, I hate when people mess up names by spelling them screwy so everyone has to ask every time how it's spelled. Also for some reason when I see tyn I want to pronounce it like "tine"...
Good luck!

I personally like Paityn. As you can see I have an unusual name. And since Peyton is not too unusual, you will always know which picture on the school wall is your daughters without her having to write the first initial of her last name. My younger brother has has 3 Jacobs in his class so they are known by using their first name-last initial. My mom's name is Tammee and she grew up with at least 3 Tammy's in her class. She does have to spell it out sometimes, but she doesn't mind because it makes her unique and people always recognize her name and it makes her stand out from the rest. Sometimes standing out from the crowd can be important.
Good luck and congratulations.

I always thought that Peyton was a boys name and Payton a girls name. So I have to vote for Paityn because of that.
I have a name that you can not find personalized items for and I did not mind that much. I would not worry too much about that. I named my son Anson and we have had things made with his name on it,
Good luck!

I think Paityn sounds more feminine for a little girl.
Peyton sounds like a strong and take charge and assertive person. Kind of like Peyton Manning - quarterback of the Colts.
I personally think that name and spelling of name play a role or part in the childs personality and how they are treated by people throughout their lives.
Congradulations on your new baby girl.

Peyton or Payton, though Payton is the feminine version of the name so I personally would go with that. I agree with others that people who don't know her could possibly end up pronouncing Paityn like "Pay - tine". Also, consider her resume when she gets older. Although it is your baby, as someone has commented, she is the one who has to live with her name for the rest of her life. The crazier the name or the spelling, the more employers will put it in the "maybe" or "no" pile - unless she is going to work in a more artsy field - you never know!

I like Peyton... I just think that it's more the common spelling and she won't have to spell her name everytime she says it to someone (because I guarantee you most people would spell it this way and not the other). Obviously though if you're going for unique go with the other one. I think that it's a really cute name either way. Good luck!

I like Peityn...and after reading some of the other moms comments I would just like to say, my name is L. and although I always have to correct how people try to spell my name I LOVE that I have never met anyone who has the same name as me. People remember me for it...they call me L. with an H...they never forget me because I do not blend in with everyone else. Giving someone a unique spelling might mean that teachers will have to think twice before writting it down, or that she may have to tell people how her name is spelled, but I think she will be thankful that she wasn't just given a generic name. It makes her even more special!!
