My Dentist Wont Treat My 4 Yr Old. Referred Him Out :-(

My 4 yr old (5 in June) has been complaining of tooth pain. We took him to our regular doctor, he pull away from her when she touched his front tooth in pain. She told us that without seeing any swelling or redness she could not give antibiotics and would have to see our dentist. I figured that, but regular dentist could not see him, and he was sent home from school so we thought regular doctor might give meds.
The regular dentist did not see any swelling or redness either. My son did NOT pull away when the dentist touched his teeth. (Did my son not have pain anymore??- How can that be?? ) In his exam he saw a pin-hole size brown spot, did not even call it a cavity. The dentist said that he will NOT numb the area on a 4 year old to see if the spot is a cavity by pushing on it. They could do it, but they don’t have “cap” to put over it when they finished. So they referred him out.
Would you mommas still take your child in to see the specialist? For a pin size hole of a brown spot, with a 4 yr old who was complaining of tooth pain for over a week to mommy and preschool?

So What Happened?

Yes, my children have been seeing a regular dentist for a few years now for regular cleanings and floride treatments. I am getting the run around by the Pediatric Group. 1st they wanted the referral before they would make the appointment, so I faxed it. Now they want the X-rays sent over before they will make the appointment. Urg.. my son will stay in pain till they get everything in order.

yes, seek treatment. What appears to be a pin-size hole on the top.....can mushroom into a full-blown cavity below the surface. An xray will show the extent of the decay.

I worked in the dental field for several years. It is almost always better for the parent to be out of the exam room.....that way the child's focus is on what is happening & not watching Mom's response to everything.

& as a heads-up, sealants work great for kids! Both of my sons had them & they last a long time!

A specialist or a pediatric dentist? Many regular dentists don't treat young children. They either don't have the properly sized equipment or experience.

I would take my child to see a pediatric dentist if she was complaining of tooth pain. Even if it is a cavity in a baby tooth, I am a firm believer in managing dental health.

Has your child not seen a dentist yet?

I am not quite sure why the would not do a filling in lieu of capping it. Yes, I would definitely go to a specialist if the dentist referred him to one. It is obviously bothersome and causing him pain.

for kids that little they should be seeing a pediatric dentist...not a regular dentist. Perhaps the dentist said "specialist" meaning pediatric dentist
If Meds are what you are seeking, antibiotics can be given by your sons pediatrician. With that said, Antibiotics will not get rid of a toothache either.

Yes I would take him to the specialist or maybe go to a pediatric dentist for a second opinion. Just because he had pain and now he doesn't, doesn't necessarily mean the problem healed itself. My husband had a root canal on a tooth done many years ago and the tooth beside it was starting to give him pain, but then it would go away so he blew it off. Finally the pain came back full force and the side of his cheek became so swollen from infection in this tooth. His doctor had to start him on antibiotics and painkillers for a few days BEFORE he could pull the tooth because it was too swollen. My husband was in a lot of pain and wished he would have taken care of the problem when it first caused him problems. I am not saying your son's problem will be this bad, but definitely get it taken care of as soon as you can. Good luck!

Absolutely. Tooth pain can come and go. What is your other option... to just ignore it and ignore his pain? That seems cruel. Don't mess with your son's teeth. Rotten baby teeth can mess up adult teeth growing below. Do whatever you can to get this fixed.

I have taken my daughter to a pediatric dentist since she was 10 mo. old for a small cavity (she has poor enamel, evidently) I would take him in, just to make sure that something isn't going on. Four is high time to see a dentist anyway, and a pediatric one will have better tools to treat your small son. He may or may not need a cap or even any drilling. My daughter has had her tooth patched without sedation.

I would rather my dentist acknowledge his limits than try to do something he doesn't feel confident doing.

First why would you take him to a doctor and not a dentist. If he is complaining of a toothache and your dentist thinks he needs to be seen
by a specialist I would do it.

He needs to see a ped dentist. Make an appt as soon as you can. Tooth pain is the worse, especially at that age.

I would. Better safe than sorry. I always want to see a specialist instead of my reg doctor. I feel that since the specialist is a specialist then they can give me a better dx.

I used to work for a pediatric dental specialist and there really is a difference. They have all the tools and things especially made for little mouths and know how to deal with children, many of which are timid or afraid. They have DVD players, balloons....it's all set up for the comfort of the child.
Plus, the kids go in and they see a room full of other kids so they feel more comfortable with it.
I wouldn't hesitate to take your child to a pediatric specialist. At least in my area, they don't necessarily charge more or anything, they are just more equipped to deal with children dental patients. It's worth it, in my opinion.

Please make an appointment at the earliest possible date so that you don't end up with a very painful absess or something. An infected tooth can make a child sick fairly quickly.

Best wishes to you.
