My 4 year old has bronchitis and has been on a steriod for 1 1/2 days. Her fever broke but oh my gosh! She's acting like a crazy woman! She's been running around like a wild woman, liking everyone, kissing non-stop, constantly humming to herself, etc. She stayed up until 12am last night. Today, we gave it to her earlier and she fell asleep before 10, but the day was insane! She's crazy! It's alright. We understand that she's sick and it's the meds, but if anyone has some advice on how to help curb the "craziness", I'd love to hear it! I plan on taking her to the park or McDonalds so that she can run off some energy tomorrow (no, she's not contagious anymore). Either way, it's going to be a long 4 days... Lol. She's a nut either way! ;)
Well, we did church today and I warned her teachers. They were cracking up at how insane she was. After her nap today, she was not quite so bad though. I love my little crazy girl and I'm so grateful that she only has to be on this for 5 days and will say a special prayer for the moms that have to do this often!!!!!! My hugs go out to them!!
Yep, steroids will do that. Except not all kids run around kissing! You are lucky! Some kids run around screaming!

Oh yeah.
My son has been on steroids since February.
LAST Febuary.
But, granted, we've only been home since mid June and the summer was round the clock craziness with something around 4 million meds. It's only been since this fall that it's really kicked in that this is life for right now. ((It's also why I'm on here so much more than I used to be... I have 20 hour days... and need to stay awake... and y'all keep me awake!))
The adults I know recommend taking a shot or having a glass of wine before bed. Then they realize it's my son, and cringe, and say "SORRY! Can't help ya."
Most of our nights end somewhere between 2am and 6am. Days start at 10am-noon. A few nights a month I just bring the laptop upstairs around midnight, tell him to have at with the gaming as long as he stays up in the room with me, and take a nap around midnight for 3 or 4 hours. These are when the Super-Insomnia kicks in and he's up for a 36 hour stretch. Shudder.
Cross your fingers for us... we just did another round of oral prednisone on top of the inhaled steroids, and it MAY have bumped bedtime back to around midnight (hoping hoping hoping!!!) I take my "me time" at night. I'm a zombie in the morning, totally incapable of enjoying or making use of it... so I've gotten precious little sleep AND sanity time these past few months.
I soooooo feel your pain on this one. Big. Big. Hugs. I highly recommend movies.
It is horrible...my poor son was getting in trouble at school the week he was on steroids. I warned the teacher...and she knew about the meds, but it isn't like she cannot correct him or make him pull cards.
I have no advice...we just dealt with the hyper/crazy and were super glad when the seven days were over.
I wish dd was just crazy energy, she gets MEAN on the steroids and has vicious nightmares, the dr has to take a different ave with her.
At least its not presenting as a really negative side effect. My DD had steriods for severe eczema rashes at 3 and instead of going to bed at her usually time, screamed in a rage until almost midnight in her bedroom. Very alarming! Emailed her ped, who apologized. We took her off them right away. And she said unfortunately some people do have rather strong reactions to steriods.
Steroids do that to me too. I nearly ended up in the hospital last year about this time due to sleep deprivation. I had not slept in about 4 days, only little cat naps. I was taking them twice a day too. The ER doc told me that the earliest you can possibly take them the better.
Think about athletes who take them and excel in their sports. It does this to them too.
Roid rage is also an effect of them, thank goodness she is giving kisses instead of beating people up!!!!
This is exactly why I have the doc give us prescriptions for Xophenex for the nebulizer. It is a quick fix and gets the lung opened up then the sterile water and med in the vial make the goo more runny and the airways opened up. The goo comes right up and they get well much faster.
Oh my. I remember when my son was on prednisone, I don't remember how old, somewhere between 4 and 6 years. He was a pretty mellow kid, and very skinny too. Well, a half hour after dosing, he'd literally be running circles around the house, and he was eating every 20 minutes like clockwork. I would take her to any outside open space you can and let her run it off! Good luck :)
Oh my, I was on them once and it scared me half to death. I felt like a teen. I'm 44. I was glad when I was done and could see how people might want more!!
Haha, oh yes. My son's pediatrician warned me of Prednisone when my son had Pnemonia. It was very funny seeing him that way. He usually is mild mannered, only when he gets overly stimulated does he go a little bonkers. But, this definetly different! He talked nonstop, ran around the house, jumped around..Oh, yes.
For me, I gave him the medicine with a big meal, not a snack. That seemed to help curb some of the side effects. Good luck!
