My Daughter Won't Fall Asleep Without My Hair!

When my daughter, who is 27 month old now, was very young, she was sick for a couple months straight with all different kinds of virus and other things, so she slept in our bed for couple months until she was all better. During that time, she started to play with my hair when she was tired and about to fall asleep and now she still has the same habit and I don't know how to stop it. She needs my hair to fall asleep (unless she falls a sleep somewhere other than her bed like in my car or something)and I know it has to stop and I get so annoyed with it sometimes even though it's completely my fault. I blame myself for this pretty bad and I feel so bad that I let this go on for such a long time and I know that it's going to be so hard for her to stop this. But we both do.
Are there any other moms who had the similar stories and let me know how I can stop myself from being next to her all the time next to her bed every time she falls a sleep ?
Please help me. Thank you.

I can totally empathize with you. My daughter used to play with my hair all the time. She had actually gotten into the habit of running her toes through my hair while she nursed and it progressed from there.

I don't really recall how we broke her of the habit. I made it known that it drove me crazy and said I was going to get a crew cut. I did get it cut shorter and shorter which gave her less 'opportunity'.

I do notice now that when she is stressed she will sometimes play with or twist her own hair. I try to remind her not to do it but it may be something she does the rest of her life. I guess there are worse things she could be doing.

Good luck!

Don't beat yourself up about this. It is what it is and you have to go on from here. Could you try letting her play with your hair while you read a book or two on her bed before you leave the room and she falls asleep? Might work. Good luck!

I know exactly what you are going through but it's not my kids' habit. It's actually my husband's. Yep that is right, my husband twists my hair to fall asleep. He says that it relaxes him all the while it annoys me. If my daughter lays next to him on the couch, he will twist her hair.

Good luck!

Hi J.,

My daughter used to do the same thing. No matter where we were she would sit on my lap or beside me and play with my hair. It would get so bad that she would get her hand tangled up in my hair!! Everyone told me I would have a hard time breaking her of this--but actually when she went to preschool it got less and less and noe at 6 1/2 she rarely converts back to that habit. Only if she is really sick or really upset. Have faith and remember she can't go to college with your hair!!!!
