My Daughter's Hand Washing.

My daughter is 2 1/2, and she LOVES to wash her hands. No kidding she will wash her hands every 10 minutes if I would let her. I know that she is doing right by keeping clean and all, but I think she is starting to get obsessed with it. I have OCD myself when it comes to things but that is not one of them. I don't want to yell at her or anything b/c she knows she has to wash them when they are actually dirty and I don't want her to be scared to if I say too much to her, you know?

What can I do next?

I too have OCD, my youngest daughter is also showing traits. However, I do not think hand washing is one of them. My youngest boy (who is far from OCD), loves the water, he would play in the toilet if I let him. So he goes to the sink all the time. He makes up reasons, like if I give him a bit of my Ice cream, he says done & I wash up now. He did not need to do this, just likes the water. I have a pool, and am very blessed for it, and I put them in it as much as possible, the water is something all my children love. Try giving her a pool, even if it is just a kids pool, let her get to the water more often. See if that helps, giving her this access may lessen her desire to always play in the sink.

Now that I have given you my 2 cents worth of oppinion, I am also going to tell you, I think you should talk to your pediatrician. It's never to early to monitor behavior, it could be OCD, it does come in soooooo many different packages.
Always eliminate all possibilities of medical issues, whenever you can.

Good luck & let us know how she does.

one way to trick her is to have her do different things int eh sink. give her plastic cups and she can wash them, plastic silverware, etc. or make up other things, so she is still playing with water but she realizes the sink you can do so many different things, this might shy her away from just washing her hands, but doing differne stuff.

Hi, My daughter loves the sink, running water and washing her hands too. She's not obsessed with washing her hands but she loves to see the water and she wants to use soap. She's 2. I think it's a phase. You know water is coming out of who knows where, big people wash their hands etc. But with your history I would at least the doc.

I'm not really sure what advice to give, have you asked your pediatrician? When all else fails, that's what I do. Good luck.

I think a lot of kids really love to do stuff with water. I have a 2 year old who loves to help wash dishes. If he even hears the water run just a little he pushes the chair up to the sink so he can wash dishes, even if we aren't washing any. Then he'll cry if I don't let him wash.

I would bring it up to the dr. but if it's just something she enjoys I wouldn't be too concerned. Now, if she acts anxious or nervouse when her hands get dirty or when she can't get them washed right away, then you might want to be a little conserned. Both my kids really like water, but they have lots of fun with it. It's not like they get upset at being dirty and such, just that they really like the way it feels, and looks, and things like that.
