My Daughter Is "Exploding" Her Diapers

Hello,
My 7 week old daughter constantly is exploding her diapers. We use Huggies diapers and have used them with our previous 2 children and not had this major of a problem. She does this often 2-3 times a day, and it is not due to full diapers. She can have a new diaper on and still everything comes out the sides or back. She weighs about 9 pounds but the newborn diapers are too snug so she is in size 1. Please help I am tired of doing laundry 3 times a day:)

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you to everyone who posted a solution to my problem. We have since gone with the pampers swaddlers and she has been in them for about 2 days and NO BLOW-OUTS :) It is amazing we went from 2-3 times a day to none. My washing machine and I are very happy campers now.

Hi E.!

Everytime we tried Huggies, my son (now 11 months) would have a blowout. They would not hold anything in. I swear by the Pampers swaddlers- never a blowout. Give that a try if you are open to switching brands. :)

I use Kirkland (Costco Brand) diapers and wipes and have loved them for both kids. I don't have leaks or have any other major problems. Both of my kids have sensitive skin and these don't seem to bother that either.

Good luck.

Hi, I also have a 6 week old baby boy and he does the same thing. We moved up a size in diapers and still have the same problem. I think the kids are just fitting to the sizes. I also used huggies. It is almost like the diapers don't go around the legs. I did noticed that when we went up in size that the explosions decreased. I also run to change very soon after he goes to the bathroom. Also, if you are breastfeeding it does make a difference because their bowel movements are not very firm, but more liquid. good luck.

My son had the same problem - we switched to PAMPERS! Pampers are the best!!! You are also doing a good thing about buying bigger diapers than neccessary - we also are one step ahead and it works great!

Pampers Swaddlers are so absorbant. They are very stretchy too so the newborn size might fit your little girl if not size 1 will work. I tried quite a few types of diapers when my daughter was first born and to me Swaddlers were hands down the best. Good Luck.

Hi, E. ~

I know what a pain in the neck you're talking about. My daughter had the same problem. Her two older brothers had tummy problems as well, but we never had to wash out their clothes constantly, either. I wish I had some solution to offer you, but we never did find one. I just kept nursing her (and still do) and eventually the stuff solidified and we stopped having to handwash her onesies so often. Our situation improved the most around 4 months, when we started giving her cereal. Anyway, you probably don't find this terribly helpful, but I wanted to let you know that an end is probably in sight. Hang in there!

I have 2 boys myself and I had the same problem w/ those diapers. I really like pampers cruisers, they seemed to work great. And surprisingly enough I really like Luvs, and the Wal-Mart brand diapers (they're cheap too!)

I was having an issue with my son and SOAKING his diapers overnight. So I did a trick I learned in a parenting magazine. Put a maxi pad in her diaper. Go to Wal Mart or Target and get the store brand, and line the diaper with it. Man what a difference it made!

Are you breastfeeding or bottle feeding? She may be allergic to a formula if she is having explosive BM's like that. I would talk to your pediatrician...also to make sure she is not dehydrated from so much loss each day.

On the laundry side of things, I would suggest a plastic training pant over her diaper - to help save you from washing clothes and linens so much. At least it would contain most of the mess.

Hi E.,
I never had any luck with Huggies for those exact reasons. I'm using pampers swaddlers and have not had 1 "explosion" yet. My daughter is 9 weeks and she is also a big baby already over 13 lbs. (size 1)
Something kindof cool, I just found a website with a cool new diaper... gdiapers.com
Good luck with less laundry!

At first I thought you wrote exploring her diapers! Had a whole solution for you, then realized you said exploding! LOL Now it won't let me just back out of this without typing something so here goes....

I think and have found that Huggies are the best for fit and absorbancy, but every baby is different - mine was really small - so probably just a matter of trying different ones to get the right one for her that will work.

They do make the little plastic pants that can go over a diaper - and that might help with the overflow. I've found Babies R Us is great for oddball stuff you never knew existed as well....anyway, just know this is temporary - at this age - was also thinking could it be the formula or feeding that's causing it? Maybe switching to something else would help.

I had the same problem with "major" brand diapers - including Luvs which aren't suppose to leak. I use Walmart's brand for my 13 month old, and used them on my first child without problems. I would suggest buying the smallest package you can find of different brands, and see which works best for you.

We use pampers swaddlers and rarely have leak issues. We tried the huggies for newborns with our first son and found that the pampers swaddlers worked better to prevent leaks. After our son was older the huggies worked fine.

With my daughter I went up a size and that worked for her because it used to go half way up her back :)...the bigger size diaper would go up the back farther. Good luck!

Hi E.,
Bless your heart girl! Well I can tell you when my son explodes in his diapers, it's because of the way he sits, and often I catch him tugging at his diaper as if he were taking it off, or just messing with the elastic. I know if he lays down on his tummy with his knees up and his butt up in the air, he will leak. Are the other children leaving her diaper alone? Could they be messing with it to loosen it up to where it will explode after it gets to be a certain fullness? Is your little girl having diarrhea? When my son was 7 mos, I was changing him every hour, to every two hours. I remember one time my husband had him on his lap, and when he went to put him down, there was a brown spot on his pants. He didn't even notice it until I said something. I asked him...What is that?? Then I looked at my son and WOW...what a mess. We actually had to put him in the tub and wash him down. LOL It was funny. Of course having to do this every day, and as often as you are, isn't so funny I'm sure. I'm sorry I don't have any other suggestions for you. I hope it stops soon for you so you can have a break. Best wishes, G.

This used to happen to me usually when my daughter would ride in the car. Make sure that you pull out the diapers on the sides because sometimes they get tucked in and makes the poopie come out the wrong way. That should fix the problem.

Pampers and Luvs never worked on my son, He was on Huggies all the way. Target, White Cloud (walmart), and Member's Mark (Sam's Club) was good too. He got diaper rash with Kirkland (Costco). But might not be the diapers, might be what you're feeding her. My son was very squirmy but mainly leaked in Pampers and Luvs.

We used huggies when our daughter was a newborn and had the same problem. We switched to "parents choice" after giving them a try and it worked out well. Sometimes it could also mean you just need to go up a size. I'm sure you'll still get those explosive poops every now and then, but not to much you can do about that! I know from experience that leaking diapers make for REALLY misreable nights, for both you and baby...ick! Give that brand a try, I think you'll be really happy with them. Good luck! :)

Hi my name is Chrisite and a mother of 2 girls (2 and 5). I had bad luck with Huggies diapers leaking when my 5 year peed as an infant, so I have used Pampers ever since and never had any leaks.
Both of my daughters had chunky legs, so I always had to go up a size in order for the diapers not to leave red marks on their legs and Pampers still worked great and were able to be pulled tight at their waist.
Hope this helps a little.....I can surely sympathize with you!!

If your daughter is thin you may try Pampers or Luvs. my son could not wear huggies because they all leaked. They have worked for a friend of mine but I can't get them to work for my son. If your little one is not too round around the belly it may be smart to just try a new style.

E. - when both my daughters were newbies, I had the same trouble. Here's what I did: I used Pampers. Now, I prefer Huggies, but for some reason, at the beginning Pampers worked better. After a few months (I'm not sure how many - maybe 2 or 3) the Huggies worked and I moved to them. That worked for us - that was the first thing I tried because I, too, was tired of laundry several times a day - and it worked!

Good luck - I've been there, and it's a pain in the tush!!

Hi E.,
My second daughter did this. It also wasn't that her diaper was full. It was just explosive and it always got all over her back and in the car seat! She is now 8 and she still goes do the bathroom a lot more than my other 2. I think it helped later when she started having solids. Especially with breast milk it just leaked and got everywhere. Didnt' really do anything but was just prepared to give her a bath and bring extra change of clothes wherever we went. She will grow out of this eventually. Have fun!

Hi there. I had the same problem with my daughter when she was younger. I found that if I used Huggie Supremes I didn't have any problems at all! The regular Huggies she always leaked out. I think since I swithced to the SUPREMES she has gone through maybe twice, but that was because it was so full. Hope that helps a little.

I really like Holly's suggestion about using a menstrual pad for a diaper doubler. They used to sell diaper doublers, but I can't find them anywhere. I personally use a combination of cloth diapers and disposible. I find the cloth diapers are snug enough not leak or explode, but I know that more laundry is not some idea's of fun. I would try using a diaper doubler before buying some new diapers to try. Good Luck.

Believe it or not, I used Huggies for quite some time with my babies and had the same problem. I tried out Luvs one day (because they didn't have Huggies in the size I needed) and have been using them ever since. I highly recommend trying a package, you've got nothing to lose, except a few loads of laundry! Good luck!
