My Daughter Has Molescum - Need Advice!

Forgive me if this is redundant, but I posted a similar question only to realize the last reply was in 2012!

My daughter is has Molluscum Contagiosum, and we are now on our 3rd dermatologist because it's been over 7 months since we were told it would just go away by itself... yea right!!

The second one wanted to freeze them off... and mind you she has about 50 molescum bumps and is only 2 1/2 years old!! Then she suggested beetle juice... oh my goodness, might as well have been the same thing as freezing!

We finally decided to go to a pediatric dermatologist for obvious reasons, and she gave us this ointment called Dermallay for molescum that so far hasn't caused any pain at all, so I'm thankful for that! It's only day 2, and she said it might take up to 4 weeks because she's had it for so long so hopefully it's the answer we've been waiting for!!

I'm originally from the east coast so I feel as if i've been conditioned to assume natural products don't really work, but this doctor swears by it so I'm crossing my fingers that I'm proved wrong! I can see a slight difference in size so far, and maybe 5 or 6 of the bumps have a scab on them which she told me to expect.

Has anyone else tried Dermallay or any other natural/home remedies for molescum? And if so, what did you use and how long did it take before seeing results?? I'm just being cautiously optimistic and want to have a backup treatment ready if this stuff doesn't work!!

Thank you so much! I know this may sound silly, but I just don't want my baby suffering from this horrible thing anymore!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I decided to take Janet's advice and give Dermallay a chance since we already purchased it and it seemed to be making some sort of changes.
I'm happy to say that after 2 weeks of using the dermallay ointment.... MOST OF THE MOLESCUM BUMPS ARE COMPLETELY GONE!!!!
We ended up having to purchase a second bottle because she had so many on her but ordered from their website which ended up being MUCH cheaper than the $35 at the derm PLUS the office visit!

She has 7 left that are still visible, but 4 of those have already formed a scab so I now know that they are on their way out!

I'd definitely recommend trying Dermallay if your child has molluscum!! It's cheaper than most products out there, doesn't hurt when applied, and most importantly it WORKS!!
Soooooo glad this nightmare is basically over!!!!

Oh, and also, they have a coupon on their website for free shipping which is really great! It's kind of hidden, and I seems to be specifically for doctors but I read on a blog that it accepted the code and luckily they were right :)

The website is www.mydermallay.com and then you click on the "healthcare professionals" tab which should pull up the coupon!

Thank you everyone for all of your input, it was truly helpful and I feel extremely blessed for receiving so many responses! Hopefully others can benefit from my experience too and I do my part in "paying it forward" :)

K.,

Dermallay worked for us!!
My daughter had a pretty bad case of molluscum when she was 4. If I had to estimate, I would say she had at a minimum 60 bumps! Unfortunately we didn't have great insurance then so once we found out it was molluscum I decided to do some research on it myself which is where I came across Dermallay for molluscum.

It did exactly as it claimed it would, and even exceeded our expectations as far as how quickly the bumps cleared up! The scabs are absolutely normal (JUST DONT PICK THEM!!) and in my daughter's case, was typically the sign that that particular bump was halfway gone!

She had been suffering (not so much pain, but being picked on in Pre-K) for around four months before we started using Dermallay. We used it twice a day on her and within the first week half of the bumps already had scabs. After two weeks, the bumps with scabs were completely gone and the rest were either scabbed or getting to that point. If I remember correctly, from start to finish it took just over 3 weeks.

I actually prefer natural / organic products so that's what I concentrated my search on, and was also one of the main reasons I decided to purchase since my daughter has very VERY sensitive skin.
There are other similar products out there that probably have the same ingredients, but price wise the dermal lay won hands down!

My advice would be to continue using the dermallay since you're already starting to see some of them scab and try to be patient! I know exactly what you're going through, but believe me.... those 3 weeks will go by faster than you think and then you're done! :)

Keep us up to date, and good luck!!

My doctor told me to pop the bumps. I asked him to demonstrate for me on one, so he popped one, digging harshly with his nails to get core out. They were around my son's eye and it was painful. I did only 2 or three per day and then chocolate reward. After several days my son said, it's OK mom do another, so we did five or six per day until they were gone. Then they were just scabs that healed in a couple of days and never came back.

My doctor had said treatments were ineffective and they take over a year usually to go away.

Here is my answer to a similar question last week.

We have dealt with it for probably 6 years. My daughter had it around her eyes. Only 1-2 at a time, but each one took several months to go away. I never did anything special to keep it from spreading and no one else in the family got it. Our primary doctor is at Mayo Clinic. He advised us to just let it run its course. The only thing they would do is scrap it or freeze it. We tried to freeze one and it didn't do anything. Do not pop them!! It causes scarring and can spread the virus. She only had two that scarred. One my MIL popped and the other one would get irritated whenever she rubbed her tired eyes. The only one that we had trouble with was one on her cheek that got infected after we were at a Disney waterpark. We were referred to dermatology and had to have it scraped and frozen. It was very painful and for weeks she looked like she had a cigarette burn on her cheek. After that one healed up they were all gone. The dermatologist thought it was probably the "mother" one.

Fast forward six months. My son developed some on his back and under his arm. My daughter now has them on her buttocks. I have them on my inner knees. No clue where it came from because my daughter was cleared.

From our experience I would say to just let it run its course.

My son had it. The doctor said that treatment was a waste of time, painful and ineffective, and that they would go away on their own in 1-2 years. We left them alone and they disappeared in about a year and a half. The ones my son had certainly wouldn't be characterized as horrible. They weren't itchy or sore and they just looked like flesh coloured bumps. They really weren't bothering anyone. We didn't share towels and nobody else caught them. My advice would be to leave them alone.

I tried a few things as well, but I got my 7year old to take 1 spoonful of coconut oil by mouth and they were completely gone in about a week! If you are able to try this with your child make sure you use a good quality coconut oil..Unrefined/Virgin, or Extra Virgin, Organic, Raw, Expeller/Cold-pressed.

I tried some over the counter stuff when my kids had it and it didn't seem to work. I popped my kids. they were young and would fall asleep on the couches and I would do it while they were asleep. They are really strong sleepers (I got their splinters out this way, they actually believed there was a splinter fairy) I would take a sterilized needle. My husband is a diabetic so we have plenty of those. and I would get under it as much as I could and I would either pop or tweeze out the core. It bleeds like crazy and that is when they are the most contagious. I made sure I cleaned it super good and put a little bandaid over it. I also scrubbed my hands like nobodies business either. They only had about 5-6 spots each and only one of my sons scarred. My nephew had some get infected and had to be put on antibiotics. I figure if you piss it off your body will realize there is something there it needs to fight, this is probably totally wrong but it worked for me.

We tried this on a few my son had on his knees .... It seemed to help and was recommended by our ped .... http://www.amazon.com/Naturopathix-Zymaderm-for-Molluscum...

Our ped did tell us it just had to run its course, but some people do have luck with this Zymaderm. We bought it at Walgreens.
