My 6 year old daughter has been picking the crust behind her ears for at least a year now. She washes behind them really good. I still monitor her in the bath or shower. But somehow she still ends up with this crust behind her ears, which I know is normal. But she picks it constantly. She claims it is fun. I have explained the infections and the pain she will suffer if she keeps doing it, but somehow it doesnt get through to her. It gets really red, raw, crusty, and pussie. Sometimes even scabs. I try to ignore it for a while to see if she has stopped just to see if it is an attention thing, but after 4 to 5 days I find it to be much worse. I clean her ears with peroxide and then I put some antibacterial. I do this for a few days until it improves and then I try to ignore it. Again it is worse when I check it. My daughter says she doesn't remember doing it. But I think she is saying this so I dont lecture her. I tell her that if she keeps doing it then I will have to start taking things away from her, such as a toy or the television. I had hoped that telling her about the infections would scare her enough to stop. Is there anything else I can do to help her leave her yuckie ears alone?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

My daughter kept losing her earrings due to her constant picking. So I stopped putting earrings in her ears and I got this white cream from the doctor and in a few weeks her ears were all cleared up. Now her holes are closed. But when she is older and ready to leave her ears alone I will repierce them for her.

True, we grew up using peroxide to clear infected wounds, but doctors are now saying soap and water is better. Peroxide can actually damage surrounding healthy tissue. If the skin is dry, I would use a nutritious oil like olive, grapeseed, or sweet almond. For extra antibacterial action, add a few drops of tea tree oil.

Have you used the antibacterial on other boo boos in the past without issue? I only ask because I actually have allergic reaction to neosporin, which I hear is more common these days.

Peroxide will dry out the skin which will make it MUCH worse. She's probably picking because the dry skin/scabs are itchy and irritating. Try spreading a thick layer of petroleum jelly behind her ears for a few days to help the area heal up.

I think the fact your child wants to pick it is normal but the condition itself is a symptom of something. Dry, itchy skin is a reflection of some imbalance going on in her body. How is her bowel movements? Overall health, sleep habits, water intake, etc. I would take a look at that and see if any modifications to increase water, decrease fried foods, processed foods, adding some healthy oils (pumpkin seed oil, flax oil, hemp seed oil (healthy omega 3's)in a raw form (usually a 1/4 tsp. a day could do the trick), and see if any changes occur. The body talks and we must learn to listen.

Good luck!

My daughter had the same problem with the crusty ears until I stopped giving her milk. It went away pretty quickly. It might not be milk but it could be a reaction to something--maybe even her shampoo or soap.
