So, my daughter came home from school today with a little black eye. She says nothing happened that she can remember, but I don't know. Does anyone know what can cause a black eye besides the eye getting hit? It is black on the side closest to her nose and it goes a little underneath her eye.
I will be calling the school on Monday, but I'm trying to figure out what could have happened since she said she did not hit it or anything.
Do they have a telescope-type thing in the playground or were they doing some kind of activity in the classroom that required her to look through something circular? Maybe she got bumped into as she was looking into something or made contact too harshly - just enough to cause a bruise but not enough to be memorable.
If she can't remember being hit i'd be concerned that she hit her head and may have a concussion...in which case she shouldn't sleep and should go to the ER immediately. Concussion symptoms include swelling around eyes, vomiting, fever, spaciness, difficulty tracking with eyes. I'm not a doctor or a nurse but I would take her in tonight.
If not a concussion, something else is going on and I guess i'd want to take her in tonight because I would worry.

Edit*** I just wanted to share that after reading the other responses it became blatantly clear to me that I'm a first time mama! Lol! :) Perhaps I was a bit too alarmed. I was going to erase my answer but thought some of you might get a kick out it because I do think my worry is something I am adjusting to as a new parent...and it's kind of funny:) I think the other mama responses are probably more on the mark:)
I would check with the teacher, but also would not be alarmed.
Kids are like bouncy balls, they trip-they fall-they bounce off of walls as they walk down hallways.....& if you're lucky.....they never, ever notice what's going on. The flipside of this would be having a child who wails on every single thing! Yuck, yikes, & praise the Lord for resilient children!
well, a lot can happen at recess and if you're playing hard, you aren't going to remember a slight bump on something that could have caused a small black eye. Doesn't sound like cause for alarm to me.
Well, one thing you should ask her is if she bumped her nose somehow.
It really doesn't take much to get a black eye when children are small and their blood vessels are fragile right under the skin.
Nobody needs to get hit in the eye to get a black eye.
My son was a baby and flopped his head and bonked me on the nose. It didn't break my nose or anything, but I sported a black eye for a while. It didn't show up until the next day. I looked like I got punched and I didn't. Thank God there were witnesses because it looked pretty bad.
(Yeah, sure....your baby did it.)
But that's what happened.
Also, my son got a sinus infection and he had TWO black eyes.
Underneath near his nose.
I wouldn't jump to any serious conclusions, but I would definitely ask the teacher on Monday if she witnessed anything occur.
If your daughter is acting normal and happy and says no one hit her, she's probably fine.
Is it dark underneath? On top of the eyelid? Is there swelling or just discoloration?
It doesn't take much to bruise the vessels near the eye. Not all bruises show up immediately. She could have bumped herself at home somehow.
Just my opinion and I hope she's fine.
Try putting something cold on it. If it's not swollen or bothering her, leave it alone. It could be gone in the morning.
hee! if i got worried every time my boys came home with a new bruise or scrape i'd have been sleep-deprived for 20 years!
if she's not upset, no need for you to be.
i'd be more worried about a kid who stayed bump-free!

I would just watch it to make sure that it goes away, and if so, let it go.
I've had 2 children show up to my daycare this week with bruises under the eye and toward the nose just like what you described. They just hit things like coffee tables. Often times if a child bumps themselves just right, they don't even notice and yet it causes a bruise. Kids hit themselves so often and we are used to them getting upset and teary. But if they are having enough fun, they hardly even notice or don't notice at all. It's normal. That's why newer parents will be outraged we didn't see it or don't know what happened. I even had a child tell me while laughing that a child bit her once. I didn't do a strip search because I figured that a laughing child couldn't really be hurt. I thought it was play and told the child to keep his mouth to himself. The next day it was an ugly bruise and mom asked me about it.
Allergies.... I had a NASTY black eye when I was in my 20's to the point where people asked me about the guy I was dating. I knew I hadn't been hit or anything (he had been out of town that week LOL) so I asked my dad (a dr) and he said it most likely is allergies and it turned out to be exactly that. I spent a few days on benedryl and then got rid of my roommate's new handsoap and the black eye was gone. We now laugh at it.
Sometimes tumors behind the eye can cause a bruise. Do not be alarmed, it is probalby not what it is. Just watch it for a while.
