My daughter is a beautiful 10 year old girl, she started to cry if i go to bed at the same time. She states that it feels weird for me to go to bed at the same time, she starts crying like something is going to happen if I go to bed at the same time.

What can I do next?

has she said why she is scared?
Did anyone tell her anything at school?
Kids say all kinds of things at school....

Does she feel unsafe?
Or having night time fears?

Anything happen to her recently?

Why did she say it feels 'weird' that you go to bed at the same time as her?

She seems really emotional about it.
Something scaring her????

She might be scared and needs to feel that you are up and awake watching out for her while she is trying to fall asleep.

I can see how she could be scared of the thought of being the last one awake in the house, at night, when it is all dark...

~If I were you I would talk to her and see if this is it...and if it is reassure her that she will be OK and maybe even stay up and check on her til she falls asleep.

I remember being completely freaked out at being the last one awake when I was a kid. Nothing had happened to me, I was just scared. I think there's something very comforting about knowing that someone is awake and watching over you.

That said, my mom said that she couldn't function if she stayed up until I fell asleep. So, if I wanted to be asleep before her, I better go to bed earlier and fall asleep sooner. Since I valued my before-bed reading time, more than I was scared of being the last one asleep, I learned to deal with my fear.

Perhaps your daughter needs an earlier bedtime? When we're overly tired, at any age, the little things magnify into epic proportions.

Good luck.

Maybe you could tell her that you are going to be up for a while-watching tv or reading. You know-you can buy sensors at the hardware store and install them on the doors and windows and they will sound an alarm if a door or window is opened. Maybe she saw a scary movie preview-my friends son slept on the floor in his parents' room for months after seeing a preview for "The Grudge". My sister merely described what the movie was about-I ididn't even have to see the preview and I was scared. Years ago, when i was 18-I saw "The Exorcist" -let's just say-I didn't sleep with the light off until I got married!

When I was a child, I hated it when my mom and dad went to bed the same time as me because I felt like I was going to be the only one awake and for some reason that made me feel unprotected. Like, if I was in bed and my mom and dad were awake, they were protecting the house and I didnt feel afraid. Im still kinda like that now.. I hate it when my husband falls asleep before me. lol.

Sounds a little strange to me, but at 10, the puberty hormones could be starting and they cry over wierd things. I would send her off to bed and tell her that you'll be watching tv/reading in your room.

Read Michael Gurian's book, "The Wonder of Girls". It is all about girls age 10-15 and their hormonal changes. I read it with my 9 year old b/c the girls she knew (who were so hormonal - sweet for a while and then nasties all of a sudden) were all 10-12. It was really enlightening for her and me.
