Hi F.,
Please consider taking him to a chiropractor. A doctor of chiropractic can do much more than people realize to help with all kinds of problems. Chiropractic has helped my family tremendously.

My boy wakes up in the morning and can hardly walk grabbing at his thigh and hip area. We give him motrin and he continues through out the day with his limp. He hurts me to see him this way. We have done xrays and blood work. both came up negative. they say he may have some virus, but those usually last a week if that, its getting close to 2 weeks.
it doesnt seem to have gotten any better, we are taking him to a specialist on Tuesday if it doesnt get better. He is happy, but limps and grabs his hip and thigh now and then. If someone has this problem or know someone that has please respond or email me... we are worried... thank you.

I had also suggested Scottish Rite earlier. They are more advanced in bone and joint issues in children than other facilities.
It sounds like your doctor is thinking along these lines:

The other thing it could be is septic arthritis:

You really need to get a bone and joint scan. Both of these things are treatable.
My heart and prayers go out to your little guy.
My son has had the same problem for years, now ! He finally was diagnosed with extreme flat feet. He has special orthodics that come way high on the instep, almost at ankle. Hip and leg perthyse runs in my husbands family and we have kept a very close eye on this problem as well. Look up information on this, it's a problem that usually just affects boys, really rare for girls. There aren't very many doctors here in Dallas that know about it either. I don't mean to scare you but we faced the same problem starting at the age of 4. We've been scared with 2 wrong Luke diag. and 1 rare bone disease diag. So many doctors have shunned us away just saying growing pains, because like your son he's happy, limping(in pain) but happy....It's awefull cause we feel so helpless and over the years it's even affected his running and at school I had to write letters for P.E. & so he wouldn't be forced to sit criss*cross, sitting on a memory cushion on the school chair also helped ease pain.
Keep in mind, with something like this there are so many
avenues to explore and test for, from Lyme disease to nerve damage in the neck or back(Gates Disease). Don't let doctors push you around and explore him from head to toe.
Good luck, be brave and pray ! S.
Take him to brodows chiropractic in Bedford. They will help him.
I'm no expert, but it sounds like you are doing the right thing. As a mother who has had the ailment conundrum child I will tell you that you follow your gut, don't give up, and keep seeing doctors until someone gives you an answer. Be the SQUEAKY WHEEL! They have lots of patients, but you have the most important one. Good luck! I would definitely pursue the Scottish Rite route.
I would take him to a chiropractor. It sounds like he might have a pinched nerve. I don't know what part of town you live in, but there is a good chiropractor at Jupiter and Northwest Hwy. His name is Dr. Ricky Hanks and his office number is ###-###-####. I know how frustrating it can be to see your little one in pain and not be able to do anything about it. Don't give up and keep trying to find an answer.

I recommend taking him to the Scottish Rite hospital. Its free and they are amazing. When my husband was younger he had virus that paralzed him when he was 2 years old, called Guienne barre syndrom. This came to mind when reading your post.
You have to go with your intuition during these times. Be persistent. If things don't seem right, keeping going back. It is so frustrating when doctors aren't helpful.
Good luck! Keep us posted on your son. Blessings to your family,
M.
Please consider taking him to a chiroprator. My son didn't walk till 16 months and we took him to our chiropractor and his hips were out of alinement. He had a simple adjustment, no popping (he cried because it was different, laying on Mom's lap)and hasn't had problems with it since. We still will take him every once in a while, when we go, but he really hasn't had any problems. Our Dr. explaines it like...with a vaginal birth, the baby has to twist and turn so many times to be able to squeeze through the birth canal, things can get out of whack. He has adjusted his kids and grandkids since almost the day they were born. Please look into this as a option. We see Dr. Dean Beacham in Mckinney.
When my son was 5, he started limping but was in no pain until he fell down once and then he grabbed his knee and said it was hurting and he started walking with a more pronounced limp. When we took him to the family doctor, and the doctor felt and mashed on his knee, my son did not react with pain. He x-rayed the knee but found no problem. When I told him he had been limping for a while before that, he felt and mashed on his hip and thigh area and my son reacted in pain. Then he x-rayed his hip and thigh and found a large bone cyst in his thigh. The doctor said sometimes pain is referred to other areas of the body in an attempt to protect the problem area. He was immediately sent to an orthpedist and surgery was scheduled since they didn't know then if it was cancer or a cyst (this has been over 30 years ago). They said after the surgery that his bone was only paper thin and we were lucky because most people don't know they have one until the bone crumbles and breaks (because there is no pain) and then it is harder to put back together. They took bone shavings from his hip to fill in the hole in his thigh and was in a body cast for 3 months. Everything turned out well.
This is probably not what your son has but just letting you know that sometimes the problem may be in another area than the one that seems to be the problem.
Have they checked your baby for a bone infection? When I was about 1-2 years old I had a bone infection in my right leg and my mom said I would drag my leg and whin a little bit. If they haven't checked him for a bone infection then I would seriously ask the doctor to do just that or refer you to someone who can. It took my mom 2 calls for them to finally say they needed to bring me to the emergency room which is where they figured that out. I will keep your family in my prayers sweetie. Let me know if you have any questions ok:)
Try myofasial release. Thank you
Our son had that happen when he was about 12. He woke up, got out of bed, and screamed. Grabbed his hip, as you said yours does. A pediatrician lived next door, and he knew immediately what it was. I have thought and thought, and cannot think of what he called it, but it was textbook symptoms. That son is 42 now, so it has been a long while. They treated it and he was fine. Still is. Well, this was as helpful as a thumbtack, but I immediatly thought of David when i read your email. Have you been to a pediatrician? I know you had x-rays and bloodwork, so you have seen a doctor.
We have a natural health doctor that my entire family goes to. There is nothing that he has not been able to diagnose and treat. If you would like his name and number, please let me know. He is in Arlington.
F., you have gotten a lot of advice which is wonderful, and I'm sure you will want to follow up on some of the suggestions. I did want to share my friend's experience with you though. She had a 4 year old with a very similar situation - a strong pain in her leg and foot. The doctors couldn't find anything wrong and labeled it a virus. The mom wasn't convinced and took her to numerous doctors and was worried just like you are. Sure enough, after about 3 very long weeks the child was fine and the pain was gone. That was over a year ago and she hasn't had any other problems. I don't know if this is the case with your son, but I did want you to know that it's quite possible that it simply IS a virus that will run its course. I wanted to share this to give you some hope. Hope this helps.
Hi F.,
I HIGHLY< HIGHLY, recommend Dr. Haggerton (chiropractor) in Hurst. He has dealt with my dad with RA and he is now off all his medication. I go myself and my son too. He is so VERY knowledgeable. Please call him and see for yourself. I am most positive he can help your child.

Hi! I know it's been a while since this question was originally posted, but I was wondering if you could share an update on what was wrong with your son and the course of treatment pursued. I came across your post while googling symptoms and these sound very similar to what my 2 year old has been experiencing. For us, it's been four weeks of no improvement and multiple doctor visits. Right now, I'm waiting for some lab results to come in.... Hopefully tomorrow. Thank you!
I don't have an answer but my very active 8 year old is experiencing the EXACT same problem! We first thought it was a soccer injury but the pain goes from one leg (behind knee/hip-groin area) to the other and this morning, the pain was in his ankle! We have a (follow up) appointment with an orthopedic doctor today. I'm so worried since he's been limping for 2 weeks now. Is your son better?
Get him to Scottish Rite hospital as soon as you can. The same thing happened to me when I was 3. Scared my parents to death. They did all of the doctor visit stuff and still no answers. My grandfather was a Mason and told them to get me to S.R. and I was diagnosed with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis in both hips and knees. Since they discovered it so early I made a complete recovery after a few years of treatment and therapy.
It sounds like your son has a bone growth problem. Ask your doctor to refer you to Scottish Rite Childrens Hospital for tests.
My friend's son had this and suffered for some time with tests and blood work before going to S.R. It is rare so most docs aren't familiar with it.
Get help for him now!
God bless!!!
My then 6 1/2 yr old daughter complained of her hip hurting for about 2 months, off and on. I thought it was such a strange "injury" I didn't pursue it much other than the occasional tynenol. Well, one morning she woke up and couldn't walk! Ok, now there is really a problem! So, I made an appt w/the orthopedic surgeon in our town & he couldn't see us til the next day. So, then I thought, the CHIROPRACTOR! Of course! We went twice a week for a couple of weeks, then once a week, then monthly and now that has been about a year and a half and we still get adjustments every other month or so, depending on how she feels. It seems her pelvis was "twisted" causing her lots of pain in her hip area & walking/running, etc. It's just the way she grows and where she may "carry" some of her growing pain stress. Just a thought, but seeing a chiropractor that you trust wouldn't hurt. I get all of my kids adjusted now....ages 8, 4 & 2.
The specialist will probably do an MRI. That will help them see things better than an X Ray.
Hi F. E,
Have you tried taking your son to a chiropractor? I am a chiropractor and I work with children on a regular basis. If your son has an area out in his spine or sacroiliac joint it can cause pain into those areas. I also use Applied Kinesiology aka muscle testing to determine nutritional deficiencies or underlying viral conditions that may be causing your sons condition. If you are interested in more information or would like to schedule a free consultation, please don't hesitate to call me at ###-###-#### or visit my website at www.sullivanchiropractic.com. Thank you!
Dr. Sandra S.
There is a disease called Kawasaki disease that effects the hips and joints of children. Have them check this its hard to diagnose if you don't know what it is. It can get worse even my friends child was in a wheel chair for a while so get diagnosed soon to rule this in or out. Hope this helps.
