My Breast Has a Burning Feeling in It

Im still nursing, never had any complications, but my breast (the one I feed mostly from) has a burning feeling when I lift my arm, or touch it. It has just started this evening, but its pretty sore. Ive felt around and while its sort of lumpy, its "normal" lumpy if that makes sense, there is no bulging cyst or anything. Ive heard of mastitis, and dont want to have that issue. It seems to hurt more, by just grazing it than examing it. I bf a bit this morning, not much though, and will feed again in a couple hours. Is this nothing, or something & can I "ward" it off somehow?

What can I do next?

It might be a plugged duct, etc, which you can take care of yourself. I had a ton of them in months 3-5 of breastfeeding, and they were soooo painful. What I did was to take a very (and I mean VERY) hot washcloth and hold it to the sore spot. And I do mean, like, hotter than I could stand it...but it helped. Then I would massage the area (towards the nipple, like you're trying to push the plug out, basically) and repeat. I spent hours, over and over again, for days, doing this. These eventually turned into huge infections for me...and that was so, so, so much worse. If I were you, I would go to the doctor and have them check it out. Better to do that then get mastitis or worse.

Might be a plugged duct.
Kellymom had the best advice on how to clear it up:
http://www.kellymom.com/bf/concerns/mom/mastitis.html
I stand in the shower and push on the uncomfortable areas to push out the stuck milk. I will also get warm wash cloths and put them on the area and push the milk out into a towel. When nursing on the other side I will put a towel and let the effected side let down and drain onto the towel. And of course nurse as much as you can on that side. It can take a couple days to clear it up but so long as it doesn't get worse you're doing fine.

If it's mastitis, you'll know pretty soon. You just need antibiotics for it. No big deal.

I say go to the doctor as soon as u are able to- If something was wrong with your baby you'd be at the doctors in a snap. Please take care of yourself as you would your child so you can continue to be a great mommy.
oh by the way HAPPY MOTHERS DAY!!

I had the same thing happen in the "favorite" breast the pain was intense I had an emergance untrasound done and it showed nothing. I was told to go home take a hot shower and put a hot compress on it and keep trying to feed or pump. it took a couple of hours of doing the hot compress but whatever it was that was irritating it, subsided and I was flowing like normal. But I feel you pain. also try tylenol and a good beer heavy stout beer. it wont hurt you or the baby but it will relax you and if you can pump dump it just incase from whatever is causing you to get irritated will not wind up in baby's tummy. gl

Hopefully this is resolved by now. One thing I've found is that incomplete feedings or not pumping long enough will cause me to feel like I've just had a breast job. Youch! The best solution is to nurse more. It's painful at first, but then all of a sudden it's not.

Definitely check it out as soon as you can. It could be nothing but it could be something bad too.... you don't want to risk missing something serious.

Good luck!

J.,

It sounds like you could be getting mastitis. Put some compresses on your breasts and start feeding on that side first. Call your doctor if it persists or if you get a red streak--- hope you feel better!

I agree with the advice here, and if you start having fever/chills, then go see your doctor right away! Mastitis requires antibiotics.

See your doctor in the morning. I put it off (using home remedies because I didn't have insurance nor the $300 for the office appointment) and not only lost my milk because of what turned out to be mastitis, but ended up spiking to 104/105 even on tylenol and ibuprofen and getting completely delusional. I went from "fine" to "out there" in under an hour.

Antibiotics baby. There's no substitute.

Oh... and the $300 dollars? We ended up having to spend FAR more than that *every* month in formula after that. Sigh. And it was an ER trip costing over a grand because I put it off. Don't. Get the jump on it.
