My 6Y/o Says He Has 'Storage Space' in His Mind :)

Hi All,

I have a wickedly intense middle child! He has been different (have to use some word to describe him, its not bad and its not good) from all other of the kids since the very beginning!

He has taught himself basic addition and subtraction at 4 and at 6 has the concept of multiplication and division down all by himself...no prompting from us what so ever...he just really loves numbers.

Anyway, he told me the other day that he remembers something I was talking about and I said I didn't think he did b/c he was so little at the time and he said no, it seemed interesting to him at the time so he put it in his 'storage space' in his mind.

WTH? Is this weird or what? All I can think about is the 'Blue Bayou' song playing from the movie The Dreamcatcher:)

My husband is one of those people that knows all the answers to all the questions on Jeopardy....but cant remember what he ate for breakfast! I am afraid my son has inherited his father's brain!

Have any of you had your children explain their memory to you in this sort of way?

Thanks guys!

He sounds like an amazing kid! I hope you will have him in gifted classes when the time comes.

And I wish I had more storage space in my head! Too much is in there now and some of it falls out regularly!!

Smiles!
Dawn

I think you have a little genius on your hands :) Ask him what else he remembers. Might be interesting to see what he says.

he is definitely gifted! ive never heard any child word it quite like that, its cute!
all children are smart, but there are some who just understand the universe in a way others dont (especially adults)
i was like that as a child, only i didnt have the vocabulary to express the things i thought until i was in junior high school.
my middle child is also like that (i was a middle child too, does that have something to do with it?)
it sounds harsh to say it isnt good to have a gifted child, but its definitely true, its so much easier to have a kid with an average mind than an intelligent one, thy dont get into things as much or cause issues with other children like the intelligent ones do.
there is also a fine line between a gifted mind and a disabled mind, which always scares me. but only a mother truly knows her own child!
have fun with him!

He sounds awesome! Keep nurturing that brain and his little heart. I would say he probably visualizes it that way and verbalizes what he sees. My son remembers everything and forgets the little things too but is advanced for his age in so many ways. As my son gets older and can explain things to me better and clearer he becomes more and more interesting to talk to. Good luck!

It's a generational thing, I think. I always referred to "file drawers" or "filing space" in my brain (can you tell that my mom worked in a legal office? ;D), but my kids have grown up in the computer generation and refer to their brains in computer terms.

If you have fears than have your son tested, he will probably score very high on the IQ. If you are concerned that his EQ (emotional quotient) isn't keeping up with his intellect, then you can work on that component with him. I think your child is inquisitive and imaginative with a fantastic view of himself. Just remember that a lot of doctors and educators either see 'problems' that really are not there or fail to recognize that all children are individual. Trust your own instincts - love him and give him the space to become! I know this sounds 'hippie-dippy" and I don't mean it that way.

My oldest..SUPER smart speak 4 languages (some self taught) can walk by a book and the knowledge just jumps out and into his brain BUT after a visit is ALWAYS forgets something and is NEVER on time. We are all different that's what makes the world a cool place. Don't worry unless he starts showing signs of OCD and even that can be controlled. You got a SUPER smart kid on your hands, keep him busy!
