I want to know why my 6 yr old pees in his pants sometime. Ok like today he was outside playing, didn't want to stop what he was doing to come inside and pee. He got in trouble, I made him stay inside the rest of the day. Tonight he gives me this funny look, he did it again. I don't understand why he is doing this when he knows he is going to get in trouble. He does wet the bed at night, more so closer to 5 am. Thats understandable I can handle that, but when he is wide awake and knows he needs to go. Where do I go from here and do I punish him. He is a Healthy little boy who never complains about anything. I don't believe that it is a medical issue. Please give me some advice.. Thanks

What can I do next?

I have a child who at that age would occassionally do the same. It was usually when he waitied TOO LONG to go because he didnt want to stop playing. When he would run it would come out. He also had issues with peeing the bed. not every night, but quite a bet when younger. He is now 9 and does not do these things anymore.

Milk consumption before bed can be a culprit for nite time peeing. Giving extra magnesium can help and also no milk at night.
Also diabetes can show with incontinance symptoms.

I am going through this with my 6 yr. old grand daughter, we were at a consignment sale yesterday and she went while we were there and then 30-45 minutes later we were at a garage sale and she started squirming and squatted down and peed her clothes, I was so embarressed! At least she went to a grassy area...LOL. She has also been tested for UTI, nothing. I am going to be watching your replies to see if I get ay new ideas too. It may be her bladder has not caught up with her last growth spurt.

She also wears pull ups at night, I don't expect her to be able to go without peeing, little kids bladders and their brains just don't connect all the time. I choose to not have sheets to wash every day.

I would make sure he doesn't have a urinary infection.

Rule out a medical condition first. At 6, he shouldn't like the feeling of being wet, so I'm not sure why he is doing it, other than kids this age have small bladders and the feeling probably comes on suddenly before and before they realize it they just can't hold it any longer. I'm convinced that boys are just built different. I was standing in the bathroom with my 3 yo the other day and he peed himself after he left the toilet and shocked himself, "how did that happen when I just peed?" Ask your son what is happening. After that, I would make him clean himself and anything on the floor up, but after that, don't give him any extra attention like punishing that he may be fishing for. Just make him go every hour even if he says he doesn't have to. We do that with my 6 yo all the time. Underjams for night time.

I wouldn't think punishing him would help, but he should learn the natural consequences. So maybe have him help you clean up any mess, wash the clothes, etc. My son did this for awhile and it turned out he was getting too much Vitamin C and the residue had built up in his ***is and it made it hurt to pee. So he put it off until it was too late. At the time I was feeding him these large all natural fruit popsicles, fruit, & juice. I cut out the popsicles and he recovered. Weird I know. Good luck!

Firstly, don't yell at him or punish him for having this happen. He is already humiliated enough. Yes, he may be waiting too long, but what woman doesn't do this....put someone or something before going to the bathroom..... Secondly, rule out a urinary tract infection. Talk to him and ask if it hurts for him to pee, etc. Thirdly, boys have smaller bladders at that age and cannot hold their urine in....I have a boy and learned this as he grew up. It is quite common for bed wetting in boys. Talk to a doc about this or google 'bed wetting' as you will learn there are groups that focus on this subject. It was helpful to me to understand the physiology of a young boy and learn why this was happening. It teaches you that he isn't at fault. Hope this helps.

He is just to interested in having fun and does not want to take time out to go use the bathroom. You just have to remind him to go. Mine does the same thing he is 5. Hope this helps. he uses pull ups at night
