I am a young mom of a 6 month old and pregnant with baby number 2. For the past week he has been waking up at around midnight screaming. He usually goes to bed at around 7:30 p.m. and usually sleeps all night. When he wakes up he is such a frenzy he won't calm down. His high pitched screams are annoying and hurt our ears. I've tried teething tablet, giving him a bottle and changing him. Nothing seems to work, until he finally calms down 30 minutes later and sleeps until about 6 or 7 a.m. My husband and I are tired and need some help, but it doesn't help us because we are all the way in Korea where we have no family or friends. So please mammas give some advice of what to do.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

So we figured it out. The poor thing has had to sleep in his car seat for the past month and half or so. He was getting tired of sleeping like that. But we didn't have out furniture until today. So now he is fine. We put him in his pack and play he is napping and sleeping just fine. Thanks for all your advice.

I know this must be difficult for you, even knowing what it might be. My doula told me that her son had night terrors for a long time and after trying a number of things, they finally found out what helped was keeping his bedroom cooler. If he was at all on the warm side, he would get them, but if his bedroom was kept at 60*F, he did fine.

I'd give anything for a 6-month-old that is only up once a night!! Just take turns with hubby and get up every-other-night. It will pass. He probably is growing or teething and needs a cuddle.

I second the guess that he's hungry! That's a LONG time to go without food at 6mos. Also, if he's learning to sit or crawl, his brain is processing that all night, too. In my experience with 3 kids- the first 6 months are easier for sleep than the next 12!
I would just nurse him, which will get him back to sleep, and wait for this phase to pass.

Sounds like "night terrors".... look it up online.
He is young... but maybe going through that already.
It is developmental based... a phase.
Normal though.
Both my kids went through that.

Is he hungry?
6 months is a typical growth-spurt time as well.... and intake has to keep up with and keep pace... with, the baby. Feeding on-demand. Which is what our Pediatrician says to do for the 1st year of life.

all the best,
Susan

WOW you put him to bed at 7:30pm and he usually sleeps all night and wakes up at 6 to 7am.

He might be hungry.

Thats too long for a little one to sleep without something in their tummy.

He could be having a bad dream but truly he should have something to eat in the midddle of the night.

I hope that he feels better soon and that you and your husband feel rested.

my baby use to do that at around that age, i posted this once and from what i've heard its normal. anyway, my baby got over it and now sleeps all night. i guess it took a couple of months of that then it stops.

Everyone is going to tell you nightmares, that is what I was told as well. My son did that from the time he was about 6 months to now, hes 16 months. I took him to the doctor and they thought his soft spot was closed, which is not. Thank God for that. But he has a promninant bump on the back of his head, thats been there since birth and they wanted to see what it was. They diagnosed him with Chiari Malformation Type 1. I have never heard of this before and it scared me to death because they were talking about surgery and everything. They did MRI on him and saw that it was not really bad so they decided to wait it out and see if it worsened. He stopped screaming at night because we started giving him Tylenol everynight before bed time. Since we knew it was pain, we could treat it.

I would tell you to take him to the doctor and have him checked for Chiari. Screaming all night is a symptom of it. I will pray that your baby does not have it.

It also could be teething too though. :)

Mine did this not too long ago. She is 19 months old and she had gotten where she would wake up in a screaming fit. My husband and i would change her, try a sippy, turn cartoons on and everything. she had gas, but even when that spell was over she was still crying. i asked my pedi and he said she might be having night terrors( Kiddie nightmares). he said it was something kids go thru. So we started takin her outside to see the dogs or horses, ( yes even tho it was 2-3 in the morning) something to get her mind off of what she was thinking. it helped alot and soon she was back to her normal sleeping patterns. just try to get his mind off of whats bothering him and maybe that will help. Best of luck 2 both of u
